This study aims to investigate injection rate and microscopic spray characteristics of diesel fuel containing fine air bubble (FBD). fine bubble was generated by cavitation theory using bubble generator. Fuel spray was injected into constant volume chamber and visualized by high speed camera. The injection rate data was acquired with bosch tube method. Injection rate of finebubble diesel was very similar with that of diesel. It showed slightly faster injection start by 5 ㎲ attributed to the low viscosity characteristics. In microscopic spray visualization, fine bubble diesel spray showed unsymmetric spray shape compared with diesel spray. It also showed very vigorous spray atomization performance during initial spray development. Improved atomization was also attributed to the low viscosity and surface tension of finebubble diesel fuel.
A performance test facility for turbopump inducer cavitation was developed and the inducer cavitation performance tests were performed. Major components of the performance test facility are driving unit, test section, piping, water tank, and data acquisition and control system. The maximum of testing capability of this facility are as follows: flow rate - 30kg/s; pressure - 13 bar; rotational speed 10,000rpm. This cavitation test facility is characterized by the booster pump installed at the outlet of the pump that extends the flow rate range, and by the pressure control system that makes the line pressure down to vapor pressure. The vacuum pump is used for removing the dissolved air in the water as well as the line pressure. Performance tests were carried out and preliminary data of test model inducer were obtained. The cavitation performance test and cavitation bubble flow visualization were also made. This facility is originally designed for turbopump inducer performance test and cavitation test. However it can be applied to the pump impeller performance test in the future with little modification.
Recently, cavitation on the surface of mechanical heart valve has been studied as a cause of fractures occurring in implanted Mechanical Heart Valves (MHVs). It has been conceived that the MHVs mounted in an artificial heart close much faster than in vivo sue, resulting in cavitation bubbles formation. In this study, six different kinds of mono leaflet and bileaflet valves were mounted in the mitral position in an Electro-Hydraulic Total Artificial Heart (EHTAH), and we investigated the mechanisms for MHV cavitation. The valve closing velocity and a high speed video camera were employed to investigate the mechanism for MHV cavitation. The closing velocity of the bileaflet valves was slower than that of the mono leaflet valves. Cavitation bubbles were concentrated on the edge of the valve stop and along the leaflet tip. It was established that squeeze flow holds the key to MHV cavitation in our study. Cavitation intensity increased with an increase in the valve closing velocity and the valve stop area. With regard to squeeze flow, the bileaflet valve with slow valve-closing velocity and small valve stop areas is better able to prevent blood cell damage than the monoleaflet valves.
A general purpose program NUFLEX has been extended for two-phase flows with topologically complex interface and cavitation flows with liquid-vapor phase change caused by large pressure drop. In analysis of two-phase flow, the phase interfaces are tracked by employing a LS(Level Set) method. Compared with the VOF(Volume-of-Fluid} method based on a non-smooth volume-fraction function, the LS method can calculate an interfacial curvature more accurately by using a smooth distance function. Also, it is quite straightforward to implement for 3-D irregular meshes compared with the VOF method requiring much more complicated geometric calculations. Also, the cavitation process is computed by including the effects of evaporation and condensation for bubble formation and collapse as well as turbulence in flows. The volume-faction and continuity equations are adapted for cavitation models with phase change. The LS and cavitation formulation are implemented into a general purpose program for 3-D flows and verified through several test problems.
A Bubble size distribution model has been developed for the numerical simulation of cryogenic high-speed cavitating flow of the turbo-pumps in the liquid fuel rocket engine. The new model is based on the previous one proposed by the authors, in which the bubble number density was solved as a function of bubble size at each grid point of the calculation domain by means of Eulerian framework with respect to the bubble size coordinate. In the previous model, the growth/decay of bubbles due to pressure difference between bubble and liquid was solved exactly based on Rayleigh-Plesset equation. However, the unsteady heat transfer between liquid and bubble, which controls the evaporation/condensation rate, was approximated by a theoretical solution of unsteady heat conduction under a constant temperature difference. In the present study, the unsteady temperature field in the liquid around a bubble is also solved exactly in order to establish an accurate and efficient numerical simulation code for cavitating flows. The growth/decay of a single bubble and growth of bubbles with nucleation were successfully simulated by the proposed model.

The sonolytic decomposition of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC 113) and several alternative compounds, such as HCFC 225ca, HCFC 225cb, and HFC 134a, in.aqueous solutions was investigated. The CFC 113 with a high volatility and a low solubility in water was rapidly decomposed with increasing sonication time. The decomposition rates were influenced by the initial concentration of CFC 113, the reaction temperature, and the gas/liquid phase volume ratio but were independant of the pH of solution. The predominant pathway of the decomposition of CFC 113 by sonication was not the oxidation by OH radicals but the pyrolysis with high temperature and pressure inside of the cavitation bubble. The pyrolysis in the cavitation bubble resulted in an almost complete mineralization of CFC 113 with the high efficient formation of inorganic products (Cl$^{[-10]}$ , F$^{[-10]}$ , CO, $CO_2$). The addition of zinc powder on the decomposition of CFC 113 by sonication caused an acceleration of the decomposition. Also, HCFCs and HFC 134a were found to be readily decomposed by the pyrolysis induced from the sonication.
A finite-element method was employed to analyze axisymmetric unsteady motion of a deformable bubble near the wall. In the present study a deformable bubble in a Newtonian medium near the wall was considered. In solving the governing equations a structured mesh generator was used to describe the collapse of highly deformed bubbles with the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) method being employed in order to capture the transient bubble boundary effectively. In order to check the accuracy of the present FE analysis we compared the results of our FE solutions with the result of the collapse of spherical bubbles in a large body of fluid in which solutions can be obtained using a 1D FE analysis. It has been found that 1D and 2D bubble deformations are in good agreement for spherically symmetric problems confirming the validity of the numerical code. Non-spherically symmetric problems were also solved for the collapse of bubble located near a plane solid wall. We have shown that a microjet develops at the bubble boundary away from the wall as already observed experimentally. We have discussed the effect of Reynolds number and distance of the bubble center from the wall on the transient collapse pattern of bubble.
Cavitation tests for a waterjet propulsor of an amphibious vehicle are carried out in the Large Cavitation Tunnel. Waterjet pump performances and cavitation characteristics including thrust breakdown performances are investigated in the tests. In addition, cavitation characteristics for waterjet propulsors working inside the intake are calculated by using a commercial CFD code, Star-CCM+. Sliding mesh is implemented to a rotating impeller and the k-epsilon turbulence model is chosen. Cavitation bubble growth and collapse are estimated using the Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model based on Rayleigh-Plasset equation. Calculated results agree fairly well with experimental results. The re-design of the waterjet propulsor is performed to enhance waterjet cavitating performances and calculated results show that waterjet thrust breakdown characteristics are significantly improved.

The phenomenon of cavitation is an unsteady flow, which is nearly inevitable in pump. It would degrade the pump performance, produce vibration and noise and even damage the pump. Hence, to improve accuracy of the numerical prediction of the pump cavitation performance is much desirable. In the present work, a homogenous model, the Zwart-Gerber-Belamri cavitation model, is considered to investigate the influence of the empirical coefficients on predicting the pump cavitation performance, concerning a centrifugal pump. Three coefficients are analyzed, namely the nucleation site radius, evaporation and condensation coefficients. Also, the experiments are carried out to validate the numerical simulations. The results indicate that, to get a precise prediction, the approaches of declining the initial bubble radius, the condensation coefficient or increasing the evaporation coefficient are all feasible, especially for declining the condensation coefficient, which is the most effective way.
