  • The effect of bronze sintered friction materials on frictional and mechanical properties is studied with the content(8~18 wt,%) and shapes (flake and irregular) of graphite that is used as solid lubricants to meet diverse characteristics such as low coefficient of friction, low wear rate and high bending strength. The content and shapes of graphite are optimized by statistical experiments. Friction test was carried out measure friction coefficient, temperature dependence and wear rate. As a result of experiments, the density, hardness and bending strength with a shape of flake graphite are lower and decrease rapidly than that of Irregular, as the content of graphite increases up to 18 wt% Aftei friction test, coefficient of friction is 0.3~0 4 and wear rate is $0.32{\sim}2.98{\times}10^{-7}cm^3/kg{\cdot}m$. When the content of graphite increases, coefficient of friction increases In a shape of flake graphite and decreases in a shape of irregular graphite.

  • The wear properties of the alumina short fiber reinforced tin-bronze matrix composites manufactured by hot pressing was studied at the room temperature and $350^{\circ}C.$ The wear loss of various specimens having different constituent and different density was examined by a pin-on-disc type wear testing machine. The results were discussed by the observation of the worn surface morphology and the analysis of the composition on the worn surfaces. Since the reinforced effect of the alumina fiber on the wear resistance was dependent on the strength of alloy matrix, the pressureless sintered composites having a lower matrix strength showed a marked increase in wear resistance by the fiber reinforcement. As the wear condition became severe, the fiber reinforcement was more effective. The delamination on the wear surface was observed in the pressureless sintered specimens having pores which are related to the initiation and the propagation of cracks. However, the wear mechanism acting on a big failure area was not found on the wear surfaces of the hot pressed specimens having a few pores.

  • Starting from the stoichiometric composition of $K_2$CO$_3$: Li$_2$CO$_3$: Nb$_2$O$_5$=3 : 2 : 5 with the mole ratio, $K_3$LiNb$_6$O$_17$ 17/ single crystals were grown using the Czochralski method. Although the starting melt composition corresponds to the $K_3$Li$_2$Nb$_5$O$_15$ crystals, the chemical composition of the as grown crystals appears to be $K_2.95$Li$_1.33$Nb$_6.17$O$_17$ or $K_2.60$Li$_1.17$Nb$_{5.44}$ 5.44/O$_{15}$ which relatively contain fewer Li ions than $K_3$Li$_2$Nb$_5$O$_15$ crystals. We investigated the influence of the deficiency of the Li ions in the tetragonal tungsten bronze structure through the measurements of DE loop, temperature dependent dielectric constant, differential thermal analysis and temperature dependent X-ray diffraction pattern.

  • $Ba_2NaNb_5O_{15}$, hereafter BNN, thin films are attractive candidates for nonvolatile memory and electro-optic devices. In the present work, thin films that have different contents of Ba, Na and Nb have been prepared by H-MOD technique on silicon and Pt substrates. XRD and SEM were used to investigate the phase evolution behavior and the microstructure of the films. It was found that the films of about 450nm thick were crack-free and uniform in microstructure. Nb content strongly influenced the phase formation of the films, where low temperature phase was always formed at the stoichiometric BNN composition. However, the amount of low temperature phase decreased with the increase of excess Nb content, and the single phase (orthorhombic tungsten bronze structure) BNN thin film was obtained at the temperature as low as $750^{\circ}C$ for samples with excess niobium. From this study, the sub-solidus phase diagram below $850^{\circ}C$ for $BaO-Na_2O-Nb_2O_5$ ternary system is proposed.

  • The bronze bowl with lid excavated from Eunnyeongchong Tumulus in Gyeongju had been united in the past and then damaged. We removed deteriorated adhesive and other impurities from it and reunited it. Some fragments of the artifact has been lost; in particular, only half of the whole main body remains. Therefore, it needed restoration treatment for exhibition and conservation. The lid, relatively much part of which remains, was treated with the method that could easily detach the restored part; the main body with much restored part was united using epoxy resin so that the restored part could well bear the weight of the artifact.

  • The gilt-bronze Sarira Reliquary was discovered when repairing three-stories east stone pagoda (Treasure No. 395) at Seungju-eup in Suncheon city in Jeollanam-do Province in August, 1986. Then it was appointed as Treasure in 1988. The Sarira Reliquary had been held in Seonamsa temple, but deterioration on the surface and corrosion had appeared affecting its surface detail. Consequently, the conservation treatment was carried out from November 2002 to March 2003.The corrosion and dirt on the surface of the Sarira Reliquary were cleaned with ethyl alcohol and Benzotriazole was applied to prevent further corrosion. Finally, NAD-10(Paraloid NAD-10), acrylic resin, was used to consolidate the structure. Moreover, after non-destructive analysis to confirm element of alloy, copper, gold, silver and mercury were discovered and this result tells us that it was plated with gold by amalgam. Fibers at the pedestal were examined under the microscope and identified as silk. The total height of this Sarira Reliquary is 6.0cm, the height of lotus pedestal and the roof is 2.7cm and 1.8cm, respectively. The roof and body are joined together, and the lotus pedestal can be separated, on which the octagonal reliquary is impaled. The pedestal consists of 3layers of petals and the surface is decorated with flower pattern. The reliquary is presumed to be created in the 14th century, and it becomes valuable historical material to reveal the secret of metal work in the late Goryeo Dynasty.

  • The material exposure tests have been carried out since 1993 to evaluate the relationship between air pollution and material corrosion with the cooperation of the researchers in Japan, China, and Korea. The test pieces such as bronze, copper, marble, and carbon steel have been exposed under both unsheltered and rain-sheltered outdoor condition separately at 18 sampling sites in East Asia. At the same time, the concentration of SO$_2$ and NO$_2$ has been measured simultaneously with passive sampler. The meteorological data were collected from the AWS (Auto-mated weather station) In each country and chemical compositions of wet deposition were also analyzed by the bulk sampling of rainfall every month. As the results, it was found that the corrosion rates of test pieces in the ambient air were appeared to be in the order of carbon steel > marble > bronze copper. The corrosion rates of test pieces in the unsheltered outdoor condition were 2.34 to 5.88 times larger than those in rain-sheltered condition. It was also found that the corrosion rate in the heavy polluted area in China was the highest, and the corrosion rates of the metal pieces were generally proportional to SO$_2$ concentration. Between two sites in Korea, the test pieces at Daegu site showed higher corrosion rates that would be due to the higher SO$_2$ concentration.
