신규 융합형 방송서비스 속성에 대한 소비자 선호 분석을 통한 미래 방송서비스 시장 예측 (Forecasting Future Broadcasting Service Market based on the Consumer Preferences for the Attributes of New Convergence Broadcasting Services)

  • Under the recent trend of telecommunications and broadcasting convergence, much more various forms of new convergence broadcasting services are being introduced than ever before. Owing to the unique advantages, new convergence broadcasting services are expected to bring drastic changes to the current broadcasting service market. In this research, we attempt to examine what kind of attributes critically affect the competition among new convergence broadcasting services, and how much competitive they will be, based on the quantitative information about consumer preferences for the important attributes of new convergence broadcasting services. Conjoint survey was used in order to obtain stated preference data of consumers. From the results, some implications are obtained as follows. First, even though new convergence broadcasting services have many unique advantages, still price is the most important for the consumers. Second, it is expected that considerable consumer valuation exists for the unique advantages of new convergence broadcasting services like mobility and dual-way interactivity, which will add the competitiveness of those services in the future. Third, since midterm advertising puts negative utility on consumers, broadcasting services with midterm advertising will not be preferred to those with neither advertising nor midterm advertising. Fourth, service coverage and the number of consumers using the same broadcasting service have a significant feedback effect on the competition between broadcasting services from the dynamic aspect. Lastly, the consumer preference can be affected by demographic variables like age and gender, and broadcasting service usage patterns such as channel switchover for escaping advertisement and frequency of using other recorded media. Main findings of our research might become useful information for both telecommunication and broadcasting companies, contents providers, advertisers, and policy and regulation makers to cope with the uncertain environment of telecommunication and broadcasting convergence.

Analysis of Consumers' Choices and Time-Consumption Behaviors for Various Broadcasting and Telecommunication Convergence Services

  • In this study, we analyzed consumers' choices of various broadcasting and telecommunication convergence services and time consumption for chosen services by using survey data. A multivariate probit model was used to model consumers' choices of various broadcasting and telecommunication convergence services, and an ordered probit model was used to model consumers' time consumption for chosen services. Factors affecting consumers' choices and time-consumption behavior were identified, and simulation results of market competition and substitution were obtained. Based on these results, it was found that for the time being, consumers are highly locked into existing broadcasting services and are likely to become more price-sensitive to the new broadcasting and telecommunication convergence services. Also, the ways in which individual characteristics affect choices and time consumption were found to be very diverse service by service.

  • In this paper, we present an interactive data broadcasting system compliant with the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standards. The proposed system provides users not only with various data broadcasting services but also remote interactive services. For various data broadcasting services, we have adopted a synchronized data injector that calculates the transmission time of synchronized data accurately and multiplexes synchronized data with the data of an MPEG-2 audio-visual program according to the calculated transmission time. To support remote interactive services, we designed and implemented a return channel server connected on a bi-directional interaction channel. Test results show that the proposed system provides both an asynchronous and synchronized data broadcasting service and remote interactive service appropriately.

  • In this paper, we first summarize key components of integrated services of telecommunication and broadcasting. Definitions and typology of th e integrated services are organized th rough comprehensive analysis of recent convergence trend of telecommunications and broadcasting. Various issues on regulations, society cultures, and technical aspects of the convergence are identified. Next, we deal with the digital media broadcasting service which is one of the technical culmination of the telecommunication and broadcasting merged services. The focus of the analysis has been made on policy implications and comparative details with other similar services in the same category. Finally, we suggest the perspectives on forthcoming digital media broadcasting service developments, and implications to cope with this emerging technological breakthrough.

이중경계 양분선택형 CVM을 이용한 DMB 데이터방송의 가치평가 (Valuing the DMB Data Broadcasting Services: An Application of Double-Bounded Dichotomous Choice Contingent Valuation Method)

  • DMB data broadcasting has recently come into the spotlight as a platform for a new business opportunity and an application of various contents. This paper estimates the willingness to pay for the DMB data broadcasting services and explains the demand characteristics for TPEG, BIFS and BWS services, using the Double-bounded dichotomous choice Contingent Valuation Method. Consumers are willing to pay 2,039 Korean won for TPEG service and 1,612 Korean won for BIFS and BWS services per month, which corresponds to the market size 87.6 billion Korean won for TPEG and 195.2 billion Korean won for BWS and BIFS a year respectively. It is also found that the more consumers show usage intentions, have experiences in the similar services, and know of the DMB data broadcasting services, the more they are likely to pay for the DMB data broadcasting services.

  • 영상기록물은 최근 많은 이용자들이 선호하는 매체이며, 방송영상이 중요해짐에 따라 이용 요구도 많아지고 있다. 그러나 현재 국내 대다수의 방송사 아카이브 기관들은 내부 직원을 위한 아카이브 서비스를 제공하고 있을 뿐, 일반 대중들을 위한 적극적인 기록정보 서비스를 제공하고 있지 않다. 이 연구에서는 특히 해외 공영방송사 아카이브 사이트에서 일반 대중을 대상으로 제공하는 온라인 기록정보서비스를 살펴보고 국내 방송사 서비스의 개선방안을 제시해보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 온라인 접근성, 검색 및 온라인 열람 그리고 아웃리치(확장) 서비스라는 3가지 서비스영역의 기준을 설정하고, 이에 의거하여, 각 영역별로 해외 공영 방송사의 서비스를 살펴보고 분석하였으며, 국내 공영 방송사 현황을 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 국내 공영방송사에 대한 일반 대중들을 대상으로 한 온라인 검색 및 자료의 제공, 다양한 아웃리치 서비스의 개발, 이용층의 확장 등, 기록정보서비스 개선 방안을 제시하였다.

  • This paper proposes the way of improvement and system build-up for shop music broadcasting services provided by the Internet. Comparing the shop music broadcasting services and personal music broadcasting services, we propose the way of shop music broadcasting services customers prefer to. That is, such a function is provided that a user can control the broadcasting music lists a specialist provides according to the current circumstance of shop. This paper proposes the whole system such a service is possible and verifies the efficiency by experiments.

  • The KOREASAT satellite, the first Korean commercial communication and broadcasting satellite, has been launched in August 1995, and has started to provide the communication and preliminary broadcasting services, respectively, in March and July 1996. In this paper the network configurations and characteristics of the services which the KOREASAT satellite provides are described. The services, which are provided by the KOREASAT satellite with its twelve communication and four broadcasting transponders, are the direct broadcasting service, the video relay service including the TVRO, SNG and TV/CATV program distribution, the company-wide communication service including VSAT and TSAT, and the other services with the digital line, trunk relay, telephone line, mobile data, music broadcasting services, etc. A communication transponder has the 36MHz bandwidth and 14W output power, and a broadcasting transponder has the 27MHz bandwidth and 12OW output power.

  • The 'Anytime, Anywhere' services have been the biggest topic in the recent digital broadcasting research area. The related applications for the Anytime and Anywhere Services are as follows: the personalized broadcasting based on the PVR (Personal Video Recorder) for the Anytime Services, and the DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting), the mobile devices supporting the wireless network and the Second TV and so on for the anywhere services. The personalized broadcasting has been researched on the one of the killer applications in the various broadcasting environment - the ground wave broadcasting, the satellite broadcasting, IPTV and CATV broadcasting suchlike. The applied contents of the personalized broadcasting have advanced from the main contents for the broadcasting to the interstitial contents like advertisements and coupons, the personalized interstitial broadcasting needs to develop the technology about the generation, storing and management of the interstitial metadata. but, the personalized broadcasting has the limitation that the TV environment is somewhat difficult to support the personalized broadcasting individually, because all family usually share the main TV at home. The Second TV is possible to solve the environmental limitation. This paper designs and develops the static set top box at home, the Second TV and their multimedia streaming techniques for the personalized broadcasting of the contents including the interstitial contents.

  • 디지털 기술의 발달로 탄생하게 된 디지털방송은 기존 영상 중심의 방송 콘텐츠뿐만 아니라 게임, 날씨정보, 증권거래 등의 다양한 데이터방송 서비스 (디지털TV 상에 운용되는 응용소프트웨어)를 서비스하는 멀티 엔터테인먼트 플랫폼으로 발전하고 있다. 하지만 게임을 포함한 대부분의 데이터방송 서비스들이 리모컨 조작의 불편함과 시청자의 한정적인 시간을 대상으로 방송 콘텐츠와의 경쟁으로 인해 성공적인 효과를 거두지 못하고 있다. 본 논문은 디지털TV가 게임 플랫폼으로 발전하기 위한 전제 조건인 데이터방송 서비스의 활성화 문제를 해결하기 위해서 데이터방송 서비스 경험자를 대상으로 인터뷰 형식의 설문조사를 수행하여 데이터방송 서비스 이용의 저해 요인을 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 시청자의 시청활동을 저해하지 않고 방송 콘텐츠와의 경쟁도를 낮추는 데이터방송 서비스 기획 가이드라인을 제안하였다.
