  • It is addressed that the turbulent broadband sound power from a sirocco fan can be modeled by the trailing edge noise. The trailing edge noise is usually influenced by inflow turbulence, separation, and boundary layer on the blade. The design parameters such as solidity(c/s) and stagger angle are specified to predict performance and noise level because the separation and slip velocity are strong1y affected by them along with the flow coefficient. • In this paper, prediction of centrifugal fan was conducted through combination the hybrid CAA method which was used to predict the fan noise with the FRPM technique which was used to generate the broadband noise source. Firstly, flow field surround the centrifugal fan was computed using the RANS equations and noise source region was deducted from the computed flow field. Then the FRPM technique was applied to the source region for generation of turbulence which satisfies the stochastic features. The noise source of the centrifugal fan was modeled by applying the acoustic analogy to the synthesized flow field from the computed and generated flow fields. Finally, the broadband noise of the centrifugal fan was predicted through combination the modeled noise source with the linear propagation which was realized using the boundary element method. It was confirmed that the proposed technique is efficient to predict the tonal and broadband noises of centrifugal fan through comparison with the measured data.

  • Capabilities of several beamforming techniques are compared for estimating the position of a moving source. Beamforming has enabled to widen our perspective of aeroacoustics in wind tunnel experiments and has provided useful approach in array measurements. Meanwhile beamforming techniques have been developed in a way to improve estimation accuracy and to save ing effort at the same time. In order to achieve reasonable outcome from aeroacoustic measurement, it is important to identify the spectral characteristics of source and to select an appropriate beamformer. Though aeroacoustic sources normally generates broadband noises, many array signal processing have been focused on narrowband processing which makes calculation numerically efficient. However, calculation in frequency-domain requires selection of single frequency of interest which affects spatial resolution and sidelobe level as a consequence. To be able to localize broadband noise source, it is proposed to use broadband beamforming. The formulas implements the deletion of diagonal term from cross spectral matrix. In this study, trajectory of flying source emitting broadband noise was simulated and several beamformers are applied.

  • This paper develops and evaluates several strategies for structural vibration control with the objective of attenuating broadband noise inside a rectangular enclosure. The strategies evaluated include model-independent collocated control, model-based feedback control and a new 'modal-estimate' feedback strategy. Collocated control requires no knowledge of model parameters and enjoys the advantage of robustness. However, effective broadband noise attenuation with colocated control requires a large number of sensor-actuator pairs. Model-based con-trollers, on the other hand, can be theoretically effective even with the use of a single actuator. However, they suffer from a lack of robustness and are unsuitable from a practical point of view for broadband structural vibration applications where the dynamic models are of large order and poorly known. A new control strategy is developed based on attenuating a few structural vibration modes that have the best coupling with the enclosure acoustics. Broadband attenuation of these important modes can be achieved using a single actuator, a limited number of accelerometers and limited knowledge of a few modal functions. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed strategy.

  • With the increase in the speed of ships and the size of ocean structures, the importance of flow noise has become increasingly critical in meeting regulatory standards. However, unlike active investigations in aeroacoustics fields for airplanes and trains, which are based on acoustic analogy methods for tonal and broadband frequency noise, only the discrete blade passing frequency noise from propellers is considered in marine fields. In this study, prediction methods for broadband noise in marine propellers and underwater appendages are investigated using FW-H Formulation1B, which can consider the mechanism of primary noise generation of trailing edge noise. The original FW-H Formulation 1B is based on the pressure correlation function tolackitsgeneralityandaccuracy. To overcome these limitations, wall-pressure spectrum models are adopted to improve the generality in fluid mediums. The comparison of the experimental results obtained in air reveals that the proposed model exhibits a higher accuracy within 5 dB. Furthermore, the prediction procedures for broadband noise for hydrofoils are established, and the estimation of broadband noise is conducted based on the results of the computational fluid dynamics.

  • An efficient time-domain numerical method for the analysis of broadband noise generation and propagation due to turbulence-cascade interaction is developed. The core algorithm of the present method is based on the B-periodicity of the acoustic response function of the flat-airfoil cascade to the ingesting gust(B denotes the number of airfoils in the cascade). To confirm this periodicity, gust-cascade interaction problem are solved by using the time-domain method, which shows that the incident gust with the circumferential mode number having the same remainders when divided by the airfoil number excites the same acoustic response of the cascade. Using the proposed fast algorithm with this periodicity, we show that the total computation time for the model broadband problem using the total 525 incident gust modes can be reduced to about 1/4 of that taken in using the previous time-domain program.

  • It is very important to detect the bearing defects in rotating machinery since the critical failure of bearing cause a machinery shutdown. However it is difficult to detect the vibration signal resulting from the initial defects of bearing because of the high level of broadband noise. A signal processing technique, called the adaptive line enhancer(ALE) as one of adaptive filter, is studied in this work. This technique is to eliminate broadband noise without a prior knowledge of the noise and signal characteristics. Also we propose the optimal methods for selecting the three main ALE parameters such as correlation length, filter order and adaptation constant used in the adaptative process. Vibration signals for three abnormal bearings, including inner and outer raceways and ball defects, were acquired from Anderon(angular derivative of radius on)meter. The experimental results showed that the proposed technique can reliably detect the bearing defective signals masked by broadband noise.

  • We improved the performance of the spectrum-sliced light source for wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks by employing a Fabry-Perot laser diode(FP-LD). We found that the FP-LDs can suppress the intensity noise as significantly as using a gain-saturated semiconductor optical amplifier. The transmission characteristics were measured and analyzed in both conditions with and without employing an FP-LD.
