  • This paper presents a low-loss broadband balun that uses a coplanar waveguide-to-slotline field transformation. It operates over a very wide frequency range and is of compact size since it does not depend on a resonant structure. To analyse imbalance, the coplanar wavelength(CPW) input ground is connected to the CPW output ground through various capacitors to introduce common-mode impedances. As the common-mode impedance increased the imbalance became significantly higher at the higher-frequency band compared with the lower-frequency band. The bias-circuit approach is used to improve the operation bandwidth of the lower-frequency band. The measured results show a passband of 200 MHz to 2 GHz, an insertion loss of less than 0.75 dB, and a size of $20{\times}14\;mm$. The amplitude imbalance is approximately 0.3 dB and the phase imbalance is less than $6^{\circ}$ over the entire operational range.

  • This paper presents the impacts of Ultra Wide-Band(UWB) sensor using frequency of 4.5 GHz on Broadband Wireless communication system which uses frequency of 4.5 GHz. The Minimum Coupling Loss (MCL) method and Spectrum Engineering Advanced Monte Carlo Analysis Tool (SEAMCAT) is used to evaluate the interference effects of UWB sensor on Broadband Wireless communication system, respectively. The minimum protection distance between single UWB sensor and mobile station of Broadband Wireless communication system should be more than 1.2 m to guarantee the co-existence. In case of multiple UWB sensors, UWB transmitting PSD of around -68.5 dBm/MHz below should be required to guarantee interference probability of 5% below for mobile station of Broadband Wireless communication system.

  • This paper proposes a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) that has broadband turning and low-level of phase noise characteristics. Due to the micro-strip line resonant circuit with a low Q value, which is applied to the broadband tuning range, the depreciated phase noise performance is compensated by restraining the harmonics of the oscillating frequency. The VCO was designed according to the proposed structure as well as the conventional structure, and the superiority of the proposed structure was verified through its simulation, fabrication, and measurement.

  • Although $High-T_c $superconducting HTS antennas have high efficiency and high gain, narrow bandwidth due to the high Q is the major limitation for application of satellite communication and mobile communication. Defining bandwidth as the frequency range over which standing wave ratio (SWR) is 2:1 or less, HTS antenna bandwidths are typically less than 1 %. Thus considerable effort has been focused on developing HTS antennas for broadband operation. In this work the HTS antenna array, using the bipin antenna which consisted of two triangle-radiation patches, was designed and fabricated using a ${YBa}_2{Cu}_3{O}_7x (YBCO)$ superconducting thin film on a MgO substrate for broadband operation. Also gold antennas with the same dimension as our HTS antennas were fabricated on the MgO substrate for the comparison. Experimental results for both antennas were reported in terms of radiation patterns, return losses, bandwidths and other various characteristics. The center frequency of HTS antennas was 20.28 GHz and the bandwidth obtained was significant 10 %.

  • In this paper, we propose a broadband beamforming method using the Spatial Response Variation (SRV) which is defined to measure the fluctuation of the array spatial response within the desired frequency band. By applying the SRV to regularization term, we achieve a good quality main beam width variation less than 1 degree within the desired frequency band. In design experiments, we show that the proposed method is better than the existing method.

  • During KSTAR plasma experiments, torsional $Alfv\acute{e}n$ waves in the frequency of few GHz or below were detected. To understand this plasma waves during the crash of MHD instabilities, an RF spectrometer has been developed for detection of the radiated RF signals in the KSTAR Tokamak. It has the capability of broadband RF spectral measurement (50 ~ 400 MHz). To detect the broadband RF signals which are radiated from the KSTAR systems, a broadband antenna is the key feature of the RF spectrometer. In this paper, a broadband bowtie antenna for detection of $Alfv\acute{e}n$-waves in the KSTAR Tokamak is presented. Planar-type bowtie antenna is designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate with thickness of 1.6 mm. The antenna consists of bowtie shaped balanced radiators and broadband planar balun. The antenna is designed to have an input impedance of 50 Ohm, and a taper-shaped balun is adopted for field and impedance matching between 50 Ohm transmission line to 110 Ohm feeding network of balanced radiators. The implemented antenna provides around -3 to 3 dBi of gain for the whole frequency band. The VSWR of the bowtie antenna is less than 12:1 over the frequency bandwidth of 50 to 2000 MHz.

  • This study identified the species-specific, frequency-dependent characteristics of broadband acoustic scattering that facilitate classifying fish species using the pulse compression (PC) technique. Controlled acoustic scattering laboratory experiments were conducted with nine commercially important fish species using linear chirp signals (95-220 kHz) over an orientation angle range of ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ in the dorsal plane at approximately $1^{\circ}$ increments. The results suggest that the angular-dependent characteristics of the broadband echoes and the frequency-dependent variability in target strength (TS) were useful for inferring the fish species of interest. The scattering patterns in the compressed pulse output were extremely complex due to morphological differences among fish species, but the x-ray images strongly suggested that spatial separation correlated well with scattering for the head, skeleton, bone, otoliths, and swim bladder within each specimen.

  • The objective of this study was to design and develop a broadband ultrasonic transducer that has both wide bandwidth and high sensitivity to measure broadband echoes related to identifying fish species. A broadband ultrasonic transducer providing a nearly flat transmitting response band of 40.2-75.5 kHz with a -12 dB bandwidth of 35.3 kHz was achieved by integrating 12 tonpilz transducer elements operating at different resonance frequencies. The average transmitting voltage response, receiving sensitivity, and figure of merit values in this frequency band were 168.4 dB (re $1{\mu}Pa/V$ at 1 m), -196.8 dB (re $1V/{\mu}Pa$), and -28.4 dB, respectively. The results suggest that bandwidth and sensitivity can be widened and improved by adjusting the array pattern and the structure of tonpilz transducer elements.
