The distilled water is used for the ultrasonic wave propagating material in the measurements of broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) that is applied in industrial and medical applications, The acoustic impedance of water is significantly changed with its temperature. Therefore, the quantitative evaluation of BUA with temperature and the ultrasonic wave propagating distance is highly needed. In this study, we evaluated the variation of attenuation with change in temperature. To measure the variation of BUA in the low frequency region at the temperatures, 27$^{\circ}C$, 29$^{\circ}C$, and 31$^{\circ}C$, we tested the Plyethylene, Teflon, MC-Nylon, Urethane specimens and analyzed the center frequency, frequency bandwidth, spectral peak amplitude. The results showed that BUA value appeared to be lower with increasing temperature. This may be due to the fact that the frequency feature of ultrasonic wave is affected by not only the specific gravity, acoustic impedence, but material crystalline, porosity, the distance of ultrasonic wave propagation in water.
Correlations between acoustic properties and bone density have been investigated in bovine cancellous bone. Speed of sound (SOS), broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA), and broadband ultrasonic reflection (BUR) were measured in 10 defatted bovine cancellous bone specimens in vitro. SOS showed a significant correlation with the apparent density of the bone. A comparable correlation was observed between BUA and the apparent density. BUR was rather highly correlated with the apparent density. It was shown that BUR had a weak correlation with BUA and a significant correlation with SOS. This indicates that the parameter BUR can provide important information that may not be contained in BUA and SOS and, therefore, can be useful as an alternative diagnostic parameter of osteoporosis. As expected, a linear combination of all three ultrasonic parameters in a multiple regression model resulted in a significant improvement in predicting the apparent bone density.

The void content of carbon fiber reinforced composite laminates was determined by the ultrasonic nondestructive technique. The ultrasonic immersion, through-transmission method developed stresses the utilization of spectral analysis and frequency dependence of the attenuation due to porosity. The measured attenuation shows approximately linear behavior over the frequency range investigated. The linear relationship between the void content and the attenuation slop (d $\alpha$/df) is found to hold, but the constant of proportionality is quite different for samples with different pore morphology. The void volume fraction determined by the attenuation slope agreed very well with that obtained by the acid digestion analysis.
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the correlations between acoustic properties, such as speed of sound and normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation, and bone mineral density in femur with high fracture risk. The speed of sound and the normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation in 15 bovine femoral trabecular bone samples in vitro were measured by using a through-transmission method with two matched pairs of ultrasonic transducers with center frequencies of 0.5 and 1.0 MHz. The volumetric bone mineral density of the trabecular bone samples was measured by using micro-computed tomography. The bone mineral density exhibited strong correlations with both the speed of sound and the normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation measured by using the 0.5 and the 1.0 MHz transducers. The highest correlation was found between the bone mineral density and the normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation measured by using the 0.5 MHz ultrasonic transducers. The results suggest that the acoustic properties measured in the femur in vitro can be used as indices for the prediction of femoral bone mineral density.
The purpose of this study was investigating the effect of 3D printing technology that changes the speed of sound (SOS) and the broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) by controlling the density of the media phantom. We used 3D printers which called additive manufacturing (AM) by using material with polylactic acid (PLA). The inside of the medium phantom was filled crossly with 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, and 50% of the material. The ultrasonic instrument measured the SOS and the BUA using a 0.55 MHz ultrasound output in opposing mode with a pair of transducers. As a result, the density of the medium phantoms with the SOS showed very high correlation (r = 0.944), but the SOS showed very low correlation (r = 0.500). It is expecting that the manufacturing and measurement method of the medium phantom using 3D printing technology will be used as basic data for ultrasonic bone mineral density.
Osteoporosis is a skeletal disease characterized by two factors: reduced bone mass and microstructure disruption of bone tissue. These symptoms increase bone fragility and can contribute to eventual fracture. In recent years, quantitative ultrasound (QUS) technologies have played a growing role in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. Most of the commercial bone sonometers measure speed of sound and/or broadband ultrasound attenuation at peripheral skeletal sites. However, QUS parameters are purely empirical measures that have not yet been firmly linked to physical parameters, such as bone strength or porosity, and the underlying physics for their variations in cancellous bone is not well understood yet. This paper reviews the QUS technologies for the diagnosis of osteoporosis and also addresses several theoretical models, such as the Biot model, the scattering model, the stratified model, and the modified Biot-Attenborough model, for ultrasonic wave propagation in bone.

The speed of sound, transmission coefficient, and attenuation are measured around the center frequency 1 and 2 MHz in solid materials such as bone, sediment, rubber, and Lucite materials. Common and different characteristics of such materials in the sound speed, transmission coefficient, and attenuation are discussed. Ambiguities in estimating such acoustic characteristics we also addressed. Ultrasonic properties of the first and second kind waves are clarified for different materials. Discussions are concentrated on classes of sound speed, broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA), and correlations of sound speed and BUA with apparent density. New correlations of inverse sound speed square and BUA with apparent density are suggested.

The VSA(Video Signal Analysis) method is the time-domain approach for estimating ultrasonic attenuation which utilizes the envelop signals from backscattered rf signals. The echogenicity of backscattered ultrasonic signals, however, from deeper depths are distorted when the broadband transmit pulse is used and it degrades the estimation accuracy of attenuation coefficients. We propose the modified VSA method using adaptive bandpass filters according to the centroid shift of echo signals as a pulse propagates. The technique of dual-reference diffraction compensation is also proposed to minimize the estimation errors because the difference of attenuation properties between the reference and sample aggravates the estimation accuracy when the differences are accumulated in deeper depth. The proposed techniques minimize the distortion of relative echogenicity and maximize the signal-to-noise ratio at the given depth. Simulation results for numerical tissue-mimicking phantoms show that the Rectangular-shaped filter with the appropriate center frequency exhibits the best estimation performance and the technique of the dual-reference diffraction compensation dramatically improves accuracy for the region after the beam focus.
An ultrasonic bone densitometer has been developed by measuring speed of sound signal transmitted and received on the skin, not through the horizontal axis but through the vertical one in tissue. The SOS(speed of sound) method measuring the time difference between the ultrasound signals reflected from the both sides of surface of bone could produce more precise result compared with the BUA(broadband ultrasound attenuation) method measuring the frequency difference. Middle finger is selected to be the best measurement position in order to increase the accuracy, after due consideration that the thickness of flesh at the down part of thumb shows too much variation although the ratio of the receiving signal is higher than the other fingers. The measured value by using SOS method shows almost the same result as compared with the conventional DEXA method.

Quantitative ultrasound technologies for osteoporosis diagnosis measure ultrasonic parameters such as speed of sound(SOS) and normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation(nBUA) in the calcaneus (heel bone). In the present study, the dependences of SOS and nBUA on bone mineral density in the proximal femur with high risk of fracture were investigated by using 20 trabecular bone samples extracted from bovine femurs. SOS and nBUA in the femoral trabecular bone samples were measured by using a transverse transmission method with one matched pair of ultrasonic transducers with a center frequency of 1.0 MHz. SOS and nBUA measured in the 20 trabecular bone samples exhibited high Pearson's correlation coefficients (r) of r = 0.83 and 0.72 with apparent bone density, respectively. The multiple regression analysis with SOS and nBUA as independent variables and apparent bone density as a dependent variable showed that the correlation coefficient r = 0.85 of the multiple linear regression model was higher than those of the simple linear regression model with either parameter SOS or nBUA as an independent variable. These high linear correlations between the ultrasonic parameters and the bone density suggest that the ultrasonic parameters measured in the femur can be useful for predicting the femoral bone mineral density.
