  • In this paper, we describe ubiquitous environments and the trend of convergence that is an evolution path of current telecommunication, and show the concept of broadband convergence network, service feature and evolution path. In order to converge wire and wireless communication, telecommunication and broadcasting, voice and data efficiently, broadband convergence network divides a network into service layer, control layer, transport layer, ubiquitous access and terminal layer. Broadband convergence network will be a network that can provide and control broadband multimedia services with QoS and securityof different and customized level. Then we depict characteristics and types of broadband multimedia service, and describe the characteristic of broadband convergence network. Finally, we show ubiquitous network based on the broadband convergence network to provide ubiquitous service which is a future telecommunication service. We also describe requirements of ubiquitous network such as an intelligent and context based platform, convergence terminals, ubiquitous computing devices, etc., and give various emerging technologies and those applications.

  • Experimental demonstration of bipolar spectral encoding code-division multiple-access with modified pseudorandom noise codes is presented. Bipolar spectral encoding is achieved with an erbium-doped fiber amplifier amplified spontaneous emission source and arrayed waveguide gratings. The bit-error rate performance of 1.25 Gbps signal transmission over 80 km single mode fiber is measured in a multiple-user environment.

  • The home network system guarantees families a safe, economical, socially integrated and healthy life by using information appliances. And it provides a family with domestic safety, control of instruments, controllable energy and health monitoring by connecting to home appliances. This study designs the broadband PLC home controller using broadband PLC(Power Line Communication) technology which can save much cost at a network infrastructure by using the existing power line at home. The broadband PLC home controller consists of the broadband PLC module, the embedded main controller module and I/O module. The broadband PLC home controller can control various domestic appliances such as an auto door-lock, a boiler, an oven, etc., because it has various I/O specifications. In this study, selected home network middleware for the broadband PLC home controller is Jini surrogate using Jini technology designed by means of access to easily a home network system without a limitation of the devices. And a client application program is supported java servlet program to manage and monitor the broadband PLC home controller via web browser of a PC or a PDA, etc. Finally, for an application, we implemented and tested a home security system using one broadband PLC home controller.

  • Broadband network based on the Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM) concept are becoming the target technology for the emerging Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network(B-ISDN). Since B-ISDN is very complex and requites a great amount of investment, optimum design and performance analysis of such systems are very important. Simulation can be widely used to analyze and examine the broadband network behavior. However, for the complicated system like broadband networks it is extremely difficult and time-consuming to develop a complete model for simulation. In this paper, an object-oriented modeling approach for the broadband network simulation is presented for the effective and efficient modeling. Object-oriented approaches can provide a good structuring capability for complicated simulation models and facilitate the development of reusable and extensible simulation models. We have developed an object-oriented model which consists of object model and behavior model. In the object mode., the components of the broadband network and both constant bit rate(CBR) and variable bit rate(VBR) traffic types of call level, burst level, and cell level are modeled as object classes. In the behavior model, the dynamic features for each object class are represented using the state transition diagram. It has been shown by illustration that objectoriented modeling is an effective tool for modeling the complicated B-ISDN.

  • We improved the performance of the spectrum-sliced light source for wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks by employing a Fabry-Perot laser diode(FP-LD). We found that the FP-LDs can suppress the intensity noise as significantly as using a gain-saturated semiconductor optical amplifier. The transmission characteristics were measured and analyzed in both conditions with and without employing an FP-LD.

  • This paper develops a framework for analyzing the effectiveness of broadband network from the value chain view. The value chain of broadband network is composed of activities such as broadband network building, application/equipments development, information systems utilization. The effectiveness from the interaction between these activities are defined as the effectiveness of informatization(private and public sector) and the effectiveness of IT Industry(effects on production on inducement of broadband carriers, IT equipments and service market creation, online digital contents market creation). For testing its real-world applicability, a case study is performed on the broadband network of Korea and the effectiveness of the framework for analyzing the effectiveness of broadband network is demonstrated.

  • Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband network is a crucial part of the space information network. LEO satellite constellation design is a top-level design, which plays a decisive role in the overall performance of the LEO satellite network. However, the existing works on constellation design mainly focus on the coverage criterion and rarely take network performance into the design process. In this article, we develop a unified framework for constellation optimization design in LEO satellite broadband networks. Several design criteria including network performance and coverage capability are combined into the design process. Firstly, the quality of service (QoS) metrics is presented to evaluate the performance of the LEO satellite broadband network. Also, we propose a network stability model for the rapid change of the satellite network topology. Besides, a mathematical model of constellation optimization design is formulated by considering the network cost-efficiency and stability. Then, an optimization algorithm based on non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) is provided for the problem of constellation design. Finally, the proposed method is further evaluated through numerical simulations. Simulation results validate the proposed method and show that it is an efficient and effective approach for solving the problem of constellation design in LEO satellite broadband networks.

  • Rapid growth of digitalization in telecommunication and broadcasting and remarkable enhancement in broadband and high speed transmission capability of media raised a problem of integrating communication and broadcasting. In order to implement this, the government has selected construction of Broadband Convergence Network (BcN) as a main new growth engine of the country. The BcN will be realized based on FTTH and Broadband Home Network (BHN) will be implemented through this solution. Transfer rate and bandwidth required for the BcN to be constructed aiming at integration of communication and broadcasting will be specified and the performance of basic transmission media, the plastic optical fiber, will be discussed in order to present its appropriateness.
