"Daffodil Gap": Reading Jamaica Kincaid's Lucy as Intertextual Interrogation of the Postcolonial Condition

  • In Jamaica Kincaid's novel Lucy, the narrator grows up with the burden of colonial legacies embedded with Englands' imperial disciplinary projects, its language, educational institutions, discourses. Colonial education interpellates the narrator into a colonial subject through its multiple ideological discourses and systems. Teaching the literature of England is the most insidious form of the Empire's disciplinary colonial projects, more powerful than military enforcement: Its mode of operation is creating phantasy and instigating and planting desire for such phantasy. As Homi Bhabha aptly theorizes as colonial mimicry and ambivalence, the narrator as colonial subject grows up split and confused as an ambivalent subject, simultaneously mimicking and desiring for the phantasized England as real, while resisting and criticizing such up-bringing and mimetic desire. This paper explores Kincaid's rhetorical strategy of employing Wordsworth's poem, "I Wandered as a Lonely Cloud," especially her use of the flower "daffodil." Employing the concept of "daffodil gap" suggested by postcolonial critics, this paper closely examines two episodes involving the flower daffodil in the novel, one in a colonial classroom and the other in a garden in a new world and suggests that Kincaid accomplishes intertextual critique of colonial education and imperial projects.

이민 임산부의 스트레스와 분만경험에 대한 현상학적 연구 (A phenomenologic study on the stresses and the experiences of pregnant women and postpartum mothers who had immigrated to the United States)

  • Koreans are one of the fastest growing immigrant groups in America. Adjsting to life in foreign country produces a great deal of stress. Differences in culture, language, expectation and social behavior can lead to misunderstandings. The pregnancy and delivery event is one of maturational crisis in life cycle. The purpose of this research was to understand the structure of the lived experience of pregnant women and postpartum mothers who had immigrated to the United States. The research question was "What is the structure of the experience of pregnant women and postpartal mothers?" The sample consisted of 16 women registrated at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of one local clinic in Hawaii. The unstructured interviews were carried out from Jnuary 5, through January, 30, 1994. They were audio-recorded and analyzed using Van Kaam's method. There are different views on the causative factors of stress. Maladjustement to the immigrant life, spousal conflicts, anxiety related to bringing up the bay and conflicts between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law are considered to be related factors. The experiences of pregnant women over the period of the pregnancy can be varied and can include change of body image, emotional and physical change. The experiences of postpartum mothers over the postpartum period can be varied and can include postpartum depression emotional irritability, fear related to bringing up the baby and disappointment with husband. Positive experiences over the period of pregnancy and postpartum were the strengthen-ing beliefs. Sources of support were, first, spouse then mother and faith. Support was also received from the physician in charge and through self-control. The nurse, by providing empathetic support, should be a person with whom they can express their feelings and share their experiences.

중학교 가정과 교육에 대한 인식 및 교과영역별 필요도에 관한 조사연구 -서울시내 중학교 학생과 학부모를 중심으로- (A Study on the Recognition to Secondary School Home Economics Education and Its Necessity Degree in Each Field of Curriculum)

  • This study aims at finding a new home economics education with will include male students as its teaching objects, and then providing home economics teachers with useful materials. For this purpose I examined the curriculum of foreign home economics education and analized male and female secondary school students’and their recognition and demand to the home economics education. Investigated persons are male and female students of the first year of 3 sendary schools and their parents in Seoul, who are choosen by menas of random sampling. The items analysis of questionnaires was performed by means of random sampling. The items analysis of questionnaires was performed by means of SPSS. The results are marked with percentage and the significance level is verified by t and X(sup)2 analysis methods. The results obtained from the items analysis are as follows:1 According to the increasing number of female employees, the mechanization of household affaires, and so on, male students and male parents got to realize the necessity of home economics education and the importance of men and women’s cooperation to lead a family life. 2. It is shown that the goal of home economics deucation must be to form a right value point of the family life and family. This fact implies that many examinees regards the home economics education in the moral point of view. 3. In the necessity degree according to each field of the home economics education curriculum, moral and social aspects such as family relationship, home management & economics, human development and bringing up are regarded more important than household affairs and the related technical aspects. 4. In the difference between groups to the necessity degree according to each field of the home economics education curriculum, there are few differences between male and female parents, but there are many differences between male and female students. Male students regards the contents of the home economics education curriculum less necessary than female students. Especially in the field of clothing, residence, human development and bringing up, the difference between male and female students is obvious. 5. The necessity degree of the contents related to environmental pollution, saving of energy and resources, utilizing of computer, etc. is very high.

The Convergence of Life and Technology from the Nurturing Perspective

  • Upbringing requires an active intervention in the process of children growing up. Convergence in technology and media makes it possible to augment nurturing by making blended infrastructures with new digital resources available in learning environments at schools. A game-based provision of educationally-valuable content within a collective, virtual environment combined with an analysis of events in the game after it has been played (blended nurture environment) may help to better communicate human values especially where old-fashioned discussion methods fail or do not fulfill the promise of effective, educational institution-based methods of bringing up. This is where life sciences, psychology, media, pedagogy and technology (need to) converge.

  • Because of the international marriage of bachelors in the rural areas, there have been grown many foreign residents, the Multi-cultural families. For the improvement of multi-cultural families, the first important thing is their early settlement in Korea. For those foreigners' settlement, systematic approach to Korean education program is necessary. Second, multi-cultural families need support to maintain their basic lives safely. Agricultural education for the next generation is, moreover, also important for them. Third, healthy growth and training for the formation of the Self-Identity of their children are needed for those multi-cultural families too. Education for bring up their children as the global talents, the cost of private education and the one of bringing up children also have to be supported. Fourth, the improvement of understanding multicultural families is significant. Development and education of various programs to participate multi-cultural families are also required.

이주민 배제 생성 기제에 대한 연구 -상층부 연구접근- (A study of the creation mechanism of exclusion against the immigrant)

  • 본 연구는 상층부 연구로서 한국적 상황에서 이주민들에 대한 차별과 편견을 생성하는 사회적 기제를 분석하고자 했다. 질적연구방법인 생애사 연구로 접근했다. 연구에는 반 다문화적 성향이 강한 한국인 10명이 참여했다. 자료는 심층면담을 통해 수집했고 수집된 자료를 기초로 개별 생애사 텍스트를 구성했다. 생애사 텍스트는 Mandelbaum(1973)이 제안한 분석틀에 의거하여 삶의 영역, 전환점, 적응을 분석했다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 연구자는 이주민 배제의 생성기제로 ① 동일지평의 기획, ② 새로운 희생양 찾기, ③ 열등감의 전이를 제시했다. 연구결과에 근거하여 연구자는 「교차문화교육」, 「내국인들이 참여하는 통합프로그램」, 「이주민들과 내국인들의 갈등을 조절하는 지역사회차원에서의 거점센터 설치와 전문인력 양성」을 제안했다.

한국의 테러리즘의 대테러전략과 민간시큐리티의 역할증대방안 (Counter-Terrorism Strategy of Terrorism and Developmental plan of Private Security in Korea)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 대테러 대응책에서 보안, 경호, 경비시스템을 정부주도형에서 민영화로 전환할 수 있는 구축방안을 제시하고자 하는데 있다. 본 논문에서는 우리나라의 대테러 현황과 선진국과의 비교를 통한 민간시큐리티의 발전방안 중 대테러 전문가 양성을 위한 자격제도 및 제반적인 발전 방안에 대해서 연구하고자 하는데 목적이 있다. 본 논문의 요약은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 국가적 대응전략에서는 선진국과 같은 통합적인 대테러 센터를 설립해야 한다. 둘째, 미국의 대통령 직속기구로 통합된 국토안보부와 같은 (가칭 : 대테러 안전부) 기구를 만들어야 한다. 셋째, 대테러법에 대한 제정이다. 넷째, 국민과 상호신뢰 회복할 수 있는 대테러 업무 민영화에 따른 협력 체제를 만들어야 한다. 다섯째, 테러 경보 체제가 필요하다. 그에 따른 민간시큐리티의 상호연계성과 발전방안으로서는 첫째, 대테러 전문가를 양성해야 한다. 둘째, 대테러 전문가 자격증 제도를 도입시켜야 한다. 셋째, 민영화 된 대테러 연구소가 필요하다. 넷째, 대테러 방지법제정을 위한 민영화의 역할의 중요성이다. 이상에서 살펴본 바와 같이 우리나라의 대테러 전문가 양성을 위한 민간시큐리티의 역할증대 방안에서 본 연구자는 무엇보다도 국가주도형에서 민간시큐리티 관련 분야와 상호 협력하는 체제 또한 학계와 관련하여 상호 보완하는 산 학 관의 협력 체제를 구축해 나가는 것이 절실히 필요하고 위에서 제시한 바와 같이 총론적 접근보다는 대테러의 체계적 연구가 시급히 요구되는 것이 현실이다. 다양한 대테러 전문가를 양성하고 시큐리티 관련 종사자들의 의식전환과 대테러 교육 기자재 및 교육내용을 구축해서 특정단체 권한이 아니고 인권침해 최소화 할 수 있는 다각적 검토 연구가 후속연구를 계속해서 연구되어져야 할 것이라 사료된다.

테러대응을 위한 국가기관의 과제와 전망 (Subject and Prospect of Terror Confrontation National Institution)

  • 21세기의 세계화, 정보화 시대에서 국가의 안보목표를 달성하기 위한 하나의 수단이 국가 정보라고 할 수 있겠다. 국가안보의 목표를 충실히 달성하기 위해서는 안보환경에 변화에 따라 신축성 있게 부응하는 것이 국민들로부터 신뢰와 지지를 받는 길이므로 매우 중요하다. 그에 따른 국가정보체계는 세계의 안보적 차원에서 군사적, 비군사적 등 수집목표활동이 확대되고 다양한 분야로 정보 첩보들이 복잡하게 연계되어 있기 때문에 체계적으로 파악하기 위해서는 종합적 정보 체계의 확립이 요구된다. 인터넷의 발달로 정부기관은 보다 전문성과 사회성이 있는 정보생산을 위해 노력해야 할 것이다(세종연구소, 2007). 이와 같이 국가위기관리 측면에서 테러의 분야는 여러 사태 중에서도 가장 중요한 분야라고 사료 된다. 지난 17대 때에 테러 방지법이 통과되지 못했지만, 이번 18대에는 법적 반대하는 부분을 원활하게 상호 협조하여 대 테러법이 우선적으로 제정 되야 하는 것이 가장 중요하다고 본 연구자는 생각한다. 인권단체나 수사권에 관련된 기관들 간의 상호 협조, 권한에 대한 양보와 이해가 절실히 필요할 것이다. 본 연구자는 국가정보원 주관으로 국가정보의 국민의 홍보, 교육 참여, 신고, 포상, 피해 보상, UCC제작, 획일 된 대테러 교보제 제작, 대테러 전문가 양성, 대테러 학회 및 협회 창설, 대테러 연구소 설립 등 대테러 정보센타의 소극적 움직임을 탈피하여 적극적인 움직임으로의 전환을 통하여 국민의 대응조치 예방 사전지식을 계몽, 국가정보기관의 이미지 개선이 꼭 필요한 시점이라 사료된다. 즉, 과거 국가정보기관의 인식 탈바꿈과 국익도 필요하겠지만, 국민 개개인의 안전보장을 영위하며 함께 발전할 수 있는 계기가 필요할 것이다.

T-DMB 프레임 분석 시뮬레이터 개발 및 교육활용에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Development of T-DMB Frame Analysis Simulator and its Utilization in Education)

  • T-DMB는 유럽의 Eureka-147 DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) 표준을 바탕으로 멀티미디어 방송이 가능하도록 표준을 추가하여 만든 서비스로 이동 중에 동영상 시청, 고품질오디오 청취, 교통정보서비스(TPEG) 등의 서비스를 제공하고 있다. T-DMB 전송 프레임은 SC 채널, FIC 채널, MSC 채널로 구성된다. 비디오, 오디오, 데이터와 같은 서비스는 MSC 채널에서 서브채널 형태로 전송되며 FIC 채널은 각 서비스와 서브채널에 관련된 정보를 전달한다. 본 연구에서는 학부, 대학원 및 교육원들에서 교육되고 있는 지상파 DMB (T-DMB) 시스템과 관련하여 T-DMB 수신기에서 수신한 T-DMB 전송 프레임을 PC로 전달하여 PC 상에서 수신된 T-DMB 전송 프레임을 분석하고 비쥬얼하게 나타내어 줌으로 T-DMB 시스템의 이해를 돕고 학습동기를 유발할 수 있도록 T-DMB 전송 프레임 분석 시뮬레이터를 C++를 이용하여 개발하고 이를 실험하였다.

  • With speeding up the process of being international municipality, the gravity of lacking parking lots in Shanghai urban area, which directly blocks the traffic in the city, has been revealed. This thesis analyses present automobiles parking capability and forecasts the future's needs for the city. To solve the problem, the concept could be to expand parking areas in city center recently to relax the tention and to do thoughtful planning in the near future on the foundation of fully consideration the trend. The municipal government has to set up policy properly, amplify regulations, strenthern the administration and open up a path to raise founds. Berween road system administration which is dynamic and parking lot system administration which is static, there are a knot on macroscopic meaning and an interference as well. The coordination of these two systems would be reflested on the effects of whole municipal traffic adminisration. Basically, public parking lots are city's foundal facilities, just like roads, bridges, etc. The main problems now in Shanghai are large parking space demands, insufficient facilities, cheap parking expenses comparing with the cost of parking lots construcion and poor administration. According to the forecast on social economy development, there will be 580 thousand automobiles in Shanghai by the year 2000, and the amount of private cars will increase greatly. The frequency of automobiles going out will be 1.45 million per day. Public parking lots being able to afford 105 thousand units are needed. To satisfy the demands, the recent aim of planning should be speed up the parking lots construction, the planning objective in next period should be developing reasonably and exceed the demands properly. In order to realize the planning objective, the government has to formulate correct policy and amplify administration regulations. The government has to adopt both administration and economy means, including charging parking people reasonably, collect necessary taxes, bringing the parking lots planning into general municipality planning, opening up an effective path to raise founds, such as set up founds for parking lots construction, issue bonds and stocks, get loans at home and abroad, etc.
