  • Spherical indentation technique was developed to evaluate the flow properties of metallic materials in carbon steel, stainless steel and alloys, etc. Through the spherical indentation test, differently degraded 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel's mechanical properties were observed and compared with conventional standard test data. The flow properties of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steels were estimated by analyzing the indentation load-depth curve. To characterize the flow property, we used material yield slope and constraint factor index rather than strain-hardening exponent because the variation of strain-hardening exponent was very little and the data showed irregularly. And the constraint factor's effect was small when the material yield slope was taken into account.

  • Modified C95600 bronze contains Fe component of 0.7 weight percentage besides Cu-7Al-2.5Si composition. The shape of centrifugal cast is a circular pipe with thick wall. Specimens machined from the centrifugal cast were quenched in oil after isothermal holding at a given heat treatment temperature in the range of $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. Mechanical properties and structural morphology are depended on the quenching heat treatment temperature regardless of isothermal holding time. Tensile strength or Brinell hardness is increased with increasing heat treatment temperature. The microstructure caused by quenching contains mixing phases of ${\alpha}+{\beta}'+FeSi+{\kappa}$ which martensite of ${\beta}'$ phase has been transformed from ${\beta}$ phase. Effect of isothermal holding temperature on mechanical properties in case of quenching heat treatment attributes to the change of volume fraction of ${\beta}'$ on the structural morphology. Mechanical characteristics of specimen, initially quenched from $850^{\circ}C$, and then tempered at $500^{\circ}C$, does not show an obvious softening indication, because disappearance of ${\beta}'$ during tempering process can be compensated by precipitation of brittle phase ${\gamma}$.

  • High pressure wear characteristics of DCI(Ductile Cast Iron) were investigated through unlubricated pin-on-disc wear test. Wear test were carried out at speed of 23m/min, under pressure of 3MPa and 3.3 MPa. Cu and/or Mn were added to examine the effect of alloying elements on the high pressure wear characteristics of DCI. To investigate the relationship between wear characteristics and mechanical properties of DCI, Brinell hardness and V-notched Charpy impact energy were tested. Wear surface of each specimen was observed by SEM to determine the wear mechanism of DCI under high pressure wear condition. In the mild wear region, wear characteristics of alloyed DCI specimens were very similar to that of unalloyed DCI. But mild-severe wear transition was occurred at different wear distance and wear rate of DCI specimens were changed by alloying elements. In severe wear condition, wear rate of DCI was dramatically increased by the addition of Mn. Although the addition of Cu 0.46wt% did not decrease the wear rate of DCI in the severe wear region, but it delayed the mild-severe wear transition. Under high pressure wear condition, wear rate and mild-severe wear transition were not concerned with hardness of DCI specimens, but they were deeply associated with impact energy changed by alloying elements.

  • In order to experimentally investigate the effect of Ni or Cu addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of high Si Solution Strengthened Ferritic Ductile cast Iron (SSF DI), a series of lab-scale sand casting experiment were conducted by changing initial concentration of Ni up to 3.0wt% or Cu up to 0.9wt% in the alloy. It was found that increase in Ni or Cu content in the alloy leads to increase in strength properties and hardness as well as decrease in ductility. The higher Ni or Cu content the SSF DI has, the higher fraction of pearlite was observed. At similar levels of Ni or Cu contents in the alloy, higher pearlite area fraction was observed in the Cu-containing SSF DI than that in the Ni-containing SSF DI. When the effect of the microstructure on the mechanical properties of Ni-containing SSF DI was considered, Ni-containing SSF DI was found to have excellent strength and hardness as well as good elongation when the pearlite fraction was controlled less than 10%. As the pearlite fraction in the Ni-containing SSF DI exceeds 10%, however, it shows drastic decrease in elongation. Meanwhile, gradual increase in strength and hardness, and decrease in elongation with respect to increase in pearlite fraction were observed in Cu-containing SSF DI. The different microstructure-mechanical property relationships between Ni-containing and Cu-containing SSF DI were due to the combined effect of the relatively weak pearlite stabilizing effect of Ni compared to that of Cu in high Si SSF DI, and matrix strengthening effect caused by the different amounts of those alloying elements required for similar pearlite fraction.

  • In this study, the environmentally friendly material charcoal was added to ricehusk, an agricultural by-product, and sawdust, which emerges during the sawing process, to produce board by mixing ratio and concentration levels of ricehusk and charcoal; it then investigated its physical properties for development purposes and achieved the following results. The water absorption and thickness swelling of the compounded board produced per adding ratio of ricehusk and charcoal showed a gradually decreasing tendency along with the increase in adding ratio of the charcoal, and as the density of the compounded board increased, the water absorption decreased, while the thickness swelling increased. The internal bond strength of the compounded board had indicated its highest value of 0.49N/㎟ at the density of 0.7g/㎤. This satisfied the quality standard for KSF 3104 Particleboard. The internal bond strength of the compounded board manufactured per adding ratio of ricehusk and charcoal showed a steady decrease with the decrease in the adding ratio of ricehusk, and an increase in the addingratio of the charcoal. Also, in cases when the ratio of the ricehusk and charcoal by KSF 3104 quality standard were 35:5 and 30:10, it satisfied the quality standard of 15.0-type, whereas it satisfied the 13.0-type quality standard if the ratios were 25:15 and 20:20. It showed a tendency of increasing hardness of the compounded board with the increase in density, and decreasing hardness with the increase in the adding ratio of the charcoal.

  • In this study, three softwood species were treated with water-soluble melamine resin by different concentration and treatment time under vacuum pressure for improving mechanical property, abrasion resistance, and incombustibility. After the treatment, a compreg was manufactured and then evaluated on physical properties. Additionally, incombustibility of compreg was determined by comparing with a wood that was treated by spraying a water-soluble fire retardant on surface. As concentration of resin increased, bending strength and Brinell hardness increased as well as abrasion resistance, but there was no correlation on treatment and mechanical properties by treatment time. The wood impregnated by water-soluble melamine resin under vacuum pressure showed better incombustibility than that of a water-soluble fire retardant sprayed wood. Therefore, this treatment could be used for improving incombustibility of wood.

  • This study examines the differences in structures, physical and mechanical properties between domestic(Quercus variabilis Blume) and foreign(Quercus suber L.) corks. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The cork tissue consists of cork cells, lenticels, sclereids and dark-brown zone. There was a significant difference in ratio of cork cells between foreign cork(93 %) and domestic cork(87 %). The ring width and width of late cork of the foreign cork were wider than those of domestic cork. But the percentage of late cork of domestic cork was richer than that of foreign cork. The size of cork cell of foreign cork was larger by about two times than that of domestic cork. 2. The density was slightly higher in domestic cork(0.22 g/$cm^3$) than in foreign cork(0.19 g/$cm^3$). During first 24 hours, the amount of water absorption of the foreign cork was greater than that of domestic cork. However, after 24 hours, the tendency was reversed. The level of EMC was higher in domestic cork than in foreign cork. Total shrinkage in the radial and tangential directions was larger in domestic cork than tn foreign cork. In the longitudinal direction, the tendency was reversed. There was no difference in total swelling in three woody directions between the two corks. 3. The modulus of elasticity in compression in the logitudinal and tangential direction was higher in domestic cork than in foreign cork, but the tendency was reversed in the radial direction. Both corks showed 95% of recovery rate after 24 hours when they were compressed by 0.5. There were no differences in tension strength and Brinell,s hardness bet ween domestic and foreign corks.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the properties of sawdust board impregnated with phenol resin according to the density and resin content of board. The sawdust board were manufactured to target densities of 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7 g/cm3 and resin content of 5, 10, 15, 20% made from Pinus densiflora S. et Z., Larix. kaemferi C. and Pinus koraiensis S. et Z. The impregnation process were executed in two ways, the application of vacuum pressure then followed by atmospheric pressure, and the application of vacuum pressure with ultrasonic vibration then followed by atmospheric pressure. The density of impregnated sawdust board increased as density and resin content of sawdust board increased, but impregnation rate decreased. The density, impregnation rate, bending strength and brinell hardness of sawdust board in impregnated vacuum pressure with ultrasonic vibration then nonpressure were higher than those of vacuum pressure then nonpressure. In this results, the impregnation rate is increased in vacuum pressure with ultrasonic vibration then nonpressure, it has affected the properties of sawdust board impregnated with phenol resin.
