  • The ion exchange characteristic of quaternary ammonium as functional group containing aminated acrylic fibrous ion exchanger were studied for the adsorption of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) in a continuous ion exchange process. The adsorption capacities of aminated acrylic for LAS as the adsorption temperature were increased with increasing adsorption temperature and were equilibrated at $40^{\circ}C$. The maximum adsorption capacities as column packing ratio (L/D) were obtained at L/D>2. The adsorption capacity for LAS was increased with increasing pH and the maximum adsorption capacity as pH was obtained at pH 7. The effects of temperature and pH were similar to those of flow rate and concentration of LAS tin the breakthrough curves, the breakthrough time and slope of breakthrough corves decreased with increasing flow rate and concentration of LAS in adsorption process.

  • As the concerns of dermal exposure of spray painters to isocyanates in the automobile industry, glove performance was examined like permeation rate and breakthrough time including fatigue test. Methylene chloride was used as the solvent for derivatization of the isocyanates with a 97.5% recovery. Ghost wipe pads were used to wipe the surface of the glove material after chemical penetration through the glove material placed under a disposable test cell. Several solvents were tested, such as thinner(xylene, toluene) and cleaning agent(acetone) by using a standard permeation test cell(AS/NZS standard 2161. part 10.3). Solvents accelerate chemical permeation through the gloves more quickly than pure HDI hardener products. The longest breakthrough times were from Nitrosolve gloves, not detected in 8 hours, compared with others like Latex, Neoprene, TNT and Dermo Plus. Therefore Nitrosolve gloves could be recommended as personal protective equipment in crash repair shops. In addition, revised exposure limit of korean regulation should be suggested for employee to minimize the risk of health symptoms.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of filter aids in the dual-media rapid filtration. Paper-filter tests were conducted to determine the proper dosages of coagulant and filter aid, and pilot plant tests using two dual-media filter columns were performed for a variety of filtration rates. Using a filter aid (non-ionic polymer), the maximum feasible filtration rate is 480m/day, while turbidity is less than 0.3 NTU and filter run-time is about 70 hours. It is possible to increase the filtration rate up to 360 m/day for keeping the turbidity less than 0.1 NTU. Turbidity increases for the filtration rate greater than 360m/day. In general, the quality of filtered water with a filter aid is stable, while the filter maintains a sufficient filter run-time for a maximum allowable head loss. Particularly, the initial breakthrough can be effectively controlled. The use of a filter aid may be one of the methods applicable if the turbidity of filtered water is required to be improved or if the filter breakthrough limits filter run-time.

  • The continuous experiments were carried out using fixed-bed column packed with strong-acid cation exchange resin for the removal of lithium ions from aqueous solution. The parameters such as bed height, flow rate and inlet concentration were investigated. Breakthrough time ($t_{0.05}$), saturation time ($t_{0.95}$), and total amount of lithium ion removed (mtotal) were obtained from the breakthrough curves. The results showed that $t_{0.05}$ and $t_{0.95}$ decreased with decreasing bed height, and decreased with increasing inlet concentration and flow rate. mtotal increased with increasing inlet concentration and bed height, but decreased with increasing flow rate. Thomas model and Yoon-Nelson model equations were applied to the experimental data, the results showed that the breakthrough data gave a good fit to Thomas model equation.

  • A column testing device capable of measuring the electrical resistivity of soil at 3 different locations was developed to verify applicability of bulk electrical conductivity (BEC) breakthrough curves in monitoring contaminant transport. Tracer injection tests were conducted with three different types of saturated sands to obtain average linear velocities and longitudinal hydrodynamic dispersion coefficients based on BEC breakthrough curves and effluent solute breakthrough curves. Comparative analysis of transport parameters obtained from curve fitting the results into the analytical solutions confirmed the validity of resistance measurements in estimating time-continuous resident solute concentration. Under the assumption that a linear relationship exists between ${\sigma}_{sat}-{\sigma}_w-C$, the BEC breakthrough curves are able to effectively reduce the laborious and time-consuming processes involved in the conventional method of sampling and analysis. In order to reduce possible uncertainties in analyzing the BEC breakthrough curves, it was recommended that resistance measurements take place nearby the effluent boundary. In addition, a sufficient electrical contrast or difference in the electrical conductivity of the influent and the saturating solution is required to conduct reliable analysis.

  • The experiment in this study was conducted as a part of an effort to evaluate filter performance with pilot-filters consisting of one mono-media and two dual-media columns. Particle distribution analysis using a particle counter is more sensitive and better than turbidity analysis in observing particle detachments and a breakthrough. In sand media filters having 1.5 m of available head, caution is needed in the head loss of the late stages of filtration, and for dual-media filters, appropriate media configuration and effluent Quality monitoring should be used for preventing the final breakthrough. Also the time of particle breakthrough in the dual media filter can be deferred by increasing bed depth, and it is necessary to use a filtration aid prior to filtration to prevent breakthrough of these intermediate sized particles in high filtration rate.

  • Adsorption experiments of three target gases such as acetone, benzene, and methyl mercaptan (MM) were carried in a continuous reactor using the activated carbon prepared from waste citrus peel. In a single gas system, the breakthrough time obtained from using the activated carbon (WCAC) prepared from waste citrus peel. In a single gas system, the breakthrough time obtained from the breakthrough curve decreased with increasing the inlet concentration and flow rate, but increased with respect to the aspect ratio (L/D). Adsorbed amounts of the target gases by WCAC increased as a function of the inlet concentration and aspect ratio. However, adsorbed amounts with the increase of the flow rate were different depending upon target gases. Results from the breakthrough time and adsorbed amount showed that the affinity for WCAC was the highest in benzene, followed by acetone and then MM. On the other hand, in the binary and ternary systems, the breakthrough curve showed a roll-up phenomenon where the adsorbate having a small affinity for WCAC was replaced with the adsorbate with a high affinity. The adsorption of acetone on WCAC was more strongly affected when mixing with the nonpolar benzene than that of using sulfur compound MM.

  • Effects of operating parameters on the breakthrough properties of Pb(II) by $Mn_3O_4$ coated activated carbon prepared by supercritical technique were investigated through fixed-bed column experiments. The mass transfer zone and equilibrium adsorption capacity were enhanced about 2.8 times for Pb(II) by $Mn_3O_4$ coating onto activated carbon. Increase of bed height enhanced the residence time of Pb(II) in adsorption zone, giving the higher breakthrough time, mass transfer zone and equilibrium adsorption capacity. Increase of flow rate reduced the residence time and diffusion of Pb(II) in adsorption zone, therefore decreased the equilibrium adsorption capacity. The higher inlet concentration of Pb(II) decreased the breakthrough time and mass transfer zone through the promotion of Pb(II) transfer onto adsorbent.

  • In this study, we have investigated the preparation of mixed bead and fiber type hybrid ion-exchanger for recovering nickel ion from plating rinse water. There was little dependence of adsorption capacity for nickel ion on the mixing ratio of resin type and fiber type of ion exchangers. However, it increased with increasing the resin content in the mixed bed. It was shown that the data Langmuir and Freundlich's adsorption isotherm model were well fitted to the linear. Affinity between the functional groups in the ion exchanger and nickel ion in the process was confirmed. The pressure drop decreased with increasing the number of stage in the multistage bed, but it increased with increasing the resin content in the mixing bed. The initial breakthrough time in the multistage bed was short due to the increase of number of stage in the continuous process. It was found that the final breakthrough time of the multistage bed was little changed. The breakthrough time decreased with increasing the amount of fibrous ion exchanger in the mixed bed. The maximum adsorption capacities of the mixed and multistage beds were 2.51 meq/g and 2.69 meq/g, respectively. The desorption time for the nickel ion with $1N H_2SO_4$ solution was lower than 10 minutes and the yield of desorption was greater than 98 percent.

  • The adsorption characteristics of active carbon used as a cartridge filler of organic vapor respirator were examined by humidity, particle size, challenge concentration and specific surface area. As a result, the 1% breakthrough time of Carbon Tetrachloride($CCl_4$) was decreased with increase of relative humidity, challenge concentration and particle size (0.6~2.0mm) of active carbon. The adsorbed amount of $CCl_4$ was about 1. 1mg/$m^2$ at RH 40% and 0. 5mg/$m^2$ at RH 80% . However in the case of prehumidified active carbon, humidity did not affected to 1% breakthrough time up to RH 40%.
