  • Epoxy materials are used as insulation material for electric power cables. In the case of a flow of excess current due to the temperature difference which occurs between the heat of the conductor and the atmosphere, heat degrades connection point of the cables. Also, the mechanical stress, which occurs due to the thermal expansion coefficient of cable connection electrode system and epoxy insulation materials along with the gap between thermal conduction based on the extra high voltage of transmitted voltage, increases possibility of cracks to occur. The relationship between mechanical stress and electrical breakdown mechanism is verified for the epoxy materials such as high toughness epoxy materials, which comes to be used contemporarily, and for the breakdown mechanism of epoxy materials on the multi-stresses (mechanical and electrical) due to the variation of the temperature.

  • Electrical breakdown characteristics of liquid nitrogen($LN_2$) used as both coolant and insulator for high $T_c$ superconductor system are very important. This paper presents dynamic breakdown characteristics fo $LN_2$ by quench phenomena of thermal bubble under high electric field. Experimental results revealed dynamic breakdown voltage fell down drastically compared with the static breakdown voltage without the quench. Because of increasing heat power, bubble size becomes big and breakdown voltage decreases. The breakdown voltage mechanism of $LN_2$ depends on thermal bubble effect. In the Electrode arrangement, electrical breakdown voltage of horizontal arrangement appears lower than that of vertical arrangement. Also, we observed the behavior of thermal bubbles in $LN_2$ which were generated after quench using camera.

  • Recently, the electronic components are used plentifully to the railway trains. This paper explains the aging mechanism which is investigated from Japanese electric trains. Investigating results about the vehicle breakdown of the machinery are explained. We can know breakdown tendency of a cause place, occurrence date etc. by investigating results.

  • In this study, the mechanisms on ultrasonication enhanced metals extraction were investigated compared with the conventional washing technique. We hypothesized the mechanisms on enhanced extraction of ultrasonication: ultrasonication increased the temperature of soil slurry and decreased average particle size of soil due to breakdown of soil aggregate. Actually, the ultrasonication increased the temperature of soil slurry to $60^{\circ}C$ in this study, and the increase in the temperature enhanced the metal extraction to 15-20% even in the conventional simple mixing. The conventional washing technique decreased average size of soil particles because of breakdown of soil aggregate, and the ultrasonication decreased the size more than that of washing. The breakdown of soil aggregate improved the contact between metals and washing agent, which enhanced the extraction of metals in the ultrasonication. Therefore, we concluded that the main mechanisms of ultrasonication are increase in the temperature and breakdown of the soil aggregate. Finally, the ultrasonicaiton increased the extractability of metals upto 40% compared to conventional washing technique.

  • 연소실 안으로 분출되는 스월 유동의 vortex breakdown mechanism에 대한 연구를 하였다. 3차원 유한 체적기법과 Runge-Kutta 시간 적분법이 적용되었으며, 난류모델은 dynamic large eddy simulation (DLES)이 적용되었다. 계산 시간의 효율성과 기억용량을 효과적으로 사용하기 위하여 message passing interface (MPI) 병렬계산 기법이 적용되었다. 스월 난류 유동에 있어서 vortex breakdown 거동을 가시적으로 표착 하였는데, 이는 스월 유동에 의한 난류 응력 증대, 난류 생성/소산율 증대 및 혼합율 증대에 대한 실험적 근거를 뒷받침하는 매우 중요한 결과이다. 또한 평균 속도와 난류 운동에너지에 대한 계산 결과도 실험 결과와 비교하였다.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of electrical breakdown and TDDR (Time Dependant Dielectric Breakdown) were studied to evaluate stability and reliability of thin insulator films such as oxide and nitride. As the oxide film thickness decreased, the electrical breakdown field was increased proportioning to its reverse square root, ${d^{-\frac{1}{2}}}$. As for the temperature dependance of breakdown field, its field was inclined to decrease as temperature increased. It also showed that oxide charge (Qss) was changed by stress field and stress time. Consequently, TDDB characteristics and breakdown mechanism proved the improvement of reliability and stability and provided the accurate analysis to predict a device life time.

  • The measurements of prebreakdown currents and breakdown voltages have been made for smooth rough, protrusion plane parallel stainless steel electrodes in vacuum ($10^{-5}$ torr), as a function of electrode separation, in the range $0.4{\sim}2.4mm$ using DC source($0{\sim}200KV$). Thee prebreakdwon currents of a each condition are found to be consistent with the Fouler-Nondheim field emission theory. The effect of the electrode surface condition on the local field enhancement factors, prebreakdown currents, and on the breakdown voltages are shown. The breakdown mechanism of a small vacuum gap was ascertained as the field emission corresponding the F-N theory. Therefore, these results suggest that the field emission currents following the electrode surface condition play a major role for initiation of DC breakdown.

  • This paper reveals the results of fundamental experiments with the breakdown strength- and treeing phenomena, by A.C voltage and impulse voltage, of cross-linked polyethylene insulator, respectively compared in each case of the various specimens; nonvoid, air void, water void, oil void and oil impregnated one, all articially made. In this research, the V-t and V-n characteristics are investigated by means of the Weibull distribution and are analysed the characteristics of fatigue breakdown caused by the A.C and impulse voltage. Based on numerous tests, treeing effect and treeing breakdown mechanism is investigated through microscopic photographs taken to clarify the shapes of each tree and treeing breakdown phenomena.

A Study on Thickness and Temperature Dependence of Dielectric Breakdown in Polyethylene (폴리에틸렌의 절연파괴와 그의 온도 및 두께의존성)

  • The characteristic of dielectric breakdown in solid insulating material dominates the reliability and safety of power equipment and affects directly to its life. In this point of view, the thickness and temperature dependence of dielectric breakdown strength and mechanism of dielectric breakdown in low density polyethylene which has been employed widely as insulating material have been technically reviewed by examinations of thermal property. The dielectric breakdown strength depending on its thickness was measured 2.6[MV/cm] at the thickness of 20[${\mu}m$] and 1.9[MV/cm] at the thickness of 75[${\mu}m$] based on ambient temperature of 30[$^{\circ}C$]. It is shown the temperature dependence that dielectric breakdown strength decreases in linear as the thickness increases. The dielectric breakdown strength depending on temperature was measured 2.6[MV/cm] at the temperature of 30[$^{\circ}C$], 1.6[MV/cm] at 60[$^{\circ}C$] and 1.3[MV/cm] at 90[$^{\circ}C$] based on the thickness of 20[${\mu}m$]. As the ambient temperature increases, the temperature dependence is shown that a very large drop is occurred up to temperature of 60[$^{\circ}C$] and a very small drop is discovered over 60[$^{\circ}C$].

  • In this study, $(Sr{\cdot}Pb)TiO_3$ series ceramics which is used in high voltage were fabricated by the mixed oxide method, and the electrical conduction mechanism and D.C. breakdown voltage characteristics of the specimens in accordance with the contents of $Bi_2O_3{\cdot}3TiO_2$ were investigated. As a result, the leakage current was increased with the contents of $Bi_2O_3{\cdot}3TiO_2$ and the measuring temperature. At room temperature, the leakeage current was showed a tendency of saturating when D.C. electrical field of $l5{\sim}30$[kV/cm] was applied to the specimen. As a result of breakdown voltage characteristics. breakdown strength was decreased when the contents of $Bi_2O_3{\cdot}3TiO_2$ were increased. On the other hand, in the temperature region below $60[^{\circ}C]$, the electronic breakdown was occured, and in the temperature region from 60 to $200[^{\circ}C]$, the thermal breakdown was occured by the Joule heat and the dissipation factor.
