  • Gas turbine blades serviced for a period are usually repaired for reuse via "rejuvenation processes" including fluoride ion cleaning, brazing or welding, and recoating. Among these processes, the welding process is applied to rebuilt damaged parts of the blade in which welding materials being mostly Ni base superalloy are supplied in the form of powder or wire. When powder is used in the welding process, the uniform supply of powder is a very important factor for the uniformity of welding. According to our experience, the uniformity was very poor with the powder supply system only utilizing pressurized air flow. A new powder supply system was developed in which powder is supplied via air flow and simultaneously mechanically. The welding uniformity was much improved with this new system. In this study, the microstructure and mechanical properties of welded parts obtained from several kinds of powder using the new powder supply system were characterized.

  • Aluminium alloys have been used widely since hundreds of years in automotive joining. Silicon is an excellent alloying element that increases the fluidity, depresses the melting temperature and prevents shrinkage defects during solidification, and is cost effective raw material. In recent few decades, research on cast Al-Si alloys has been expanding globally in military, automobile and aerospace industries. These alloys are good wear and corrosion resistant which depends on processing parameters and service conditions. However, the formation of big Si-needles in Al-Si alloys is a serious issue in joining industries. Silicon modification treatments are generally carried out to improve their durability and strength. This paper covers an elaborative study of various Al-Si alloys, the modification strategies to refine the Si-needles, effect of processing parameters and joining characteristics for automotive applications.

  • Inner Structured and Bonded(ISB) panel, a kind of metallic sandwich panel, consists of two thin skin plates bonded to a micro-patterned inner structure. Its overall thickness is $1\~3mm$and it has attractive properties such as ultra-lightweight, high efficiency in stiffness-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratio. In many previous studies, resistance welding, brazing and adhesive bonding are studied for joining the panel. However these methods did not consider productivity, but focused on structural characteristics of joined panels, so that the joining process is very complicated and expensive. In this paper, a new joining process with resistance welding is developed. Curved surface electrodes are used to consider the productivity and the stopper is used between electrodes during welding time to maintain the shape of inner structure. Welding time, gap of electrodes and distance between welding points are selected as the process parameters. By measuring the tensile load with respect to the variation of welding time and gap of electrodes, proper welding conditions are studied. Welding time is proper between 1.5-2.5cycle. If welding time is too long, then inner structures are damaged by overheating. Gap of electrode should be shorter than threshold value fur joint strength, when total thickness of inner structure and skin plate is 3.3mm, the threshold distance is 3.0mm.

Ti합금 접합용 Ti-Cu-Ni-Si계 삽입금속의 개발에 관한 연구 (A study on the development of Ti-Cu-Ni-Si insert metal for Ti alloys)

  • The purpose of this study is to develope an insert metal which can be brazed at lower temperature than the conventionally used insert metal and provide higher strength joint than base metal. In the review of binary phase diagram concerning Ti, Cu and Ni resulted in the discovery of Si having eutectic composition with them. The microstructure and the distribution of elements in reaction zone between CP Ti and insert metal were investigated by Optical Microscopy, SEM/EDX, EPMA, X-RAY. The newly developed insert metal is Ti-15wt%Cu-18wt%Ni-2wt%Si, which can yield the lower brazing temperature(1183K) compared with the conventional Ti-Cu-Ni system insert metal. The joints with this insert metal had tensile strength of 385MPa in the bonding temperature range of 1183K to 1243K.

2상 스테인리스강과 크롬동합금의 브레이징부 생성상의 생성기구에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Formation Mechanism of Microconstituents in Brazed Joint of Duplex Stainless Steel and Cr-Cu Alloy)

  • The formation mechanism of microconstituents in brazed joints of duplex stainless steel and Cr-Cu alloy which is an essential process of rocket engine manufacturing was investigated using Cu base insert metal. $SUS329J_3L$ and C18200 were used for base metal and AMS 4764 was used for insert metal. The brazing was carried out under various conditions. There were various phases in the joints, because of reaction between liquid insert metal and base metals. Since liquid insert metal reacts with duplex stainless steel, liquid Cu from insert metal infiltrated into the $\alpha/\beta$ interface of duplex stainless steel. Through the process of Cu infiltration, isolated stainless steel pieces come into the liquid insert metal. Since liquid insert metal reacts with Cr-Cu alloy. Cr precipitates from C18200 come into the liquid insert metal. With increment of bonding temperature and holding time, amounts and sizes of phases increased. but Cr-Mn compounds decreased at 1303k for 1.2ks and Mn-rich phases disappeared Fe-Cr compounds formed.

일본의 브레이징 기술과 동향 (1) -알루미늄 브레이징- (Brazing Technilogy and Trend in Japan(I) -Aluminum Beazing-)

  • 브래이징은 모재보다 용점이 낮은 재료를 접합매체(납재)로 하여, 450.deg. C 이상의 온도에서 모재를 녹이지 않고 납재만 용융시켜, 모재의 틈새에 용융된 납재를 침투(모세관 유입) 시킴 으로써 접합하는 방법이다. 브레이징은 (1) 한 번에 여러 곳을 접합할 수 있어 대량생산이 용이 하고, (2) 이종금속의 접합이 용이하며, (3) 복잡한 면의 접합이 가능하고, (4) 박판 및 세선의 접합이 용이하며, (5) 기밀, 수밀에 강하고 접합 강도가 우수하다는 장점으로 인해 적용범위가 점차 확대되고 있다. 국내에서도 현재 수많은 업체에서 브레이징을 제품생산에 적용하고 있으나 브레이징 기술은 그리 높지 않은 상태이다. 그러나 최근 브레이징 분야에 대한 기술개발 욕구가 증대되고 있는 상황이어서, 브레이징에 대한 기술과 정보의 보급 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 이에 필자는 일본의 브레이징 자료를 중심으로 브레이징에 관한 기초 지식을 기술하고 덧붙여 연구 동향을 소개하고자 한다.

Cu-Si 삽입금속을 이용한 DP강의 MIG 아크 브레이징 접합부의 미세조직과 기계적 성질 (Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Gas Metal Arc Brazed Joint of DP Steel with Cu-Si Filler Metal)

  • In this study, Microstructure and tensile properties in arc brazed joints of 1000MPa grade DP steel using Cu-Si insert metal were investigated. The fusion zone was composed of Cu phase which solidified a little Fe and Si. The former phase formed due to dilute the edge of base material by arc, although Fe was not solid solution in Cu at the room temperature. Cu3Si particles formed by crystallization at $1100^{\circ}C$ during faster cooling. After the tensile shear test, there are no differences between the brazed joint efficiencies. The maximum joint efficient was about 37% compared to strength of base metal. It is better than that of arc brazed joint of DP steel using Cu-Sn filler metal. Fracture position of all brazing conditions was in the fusion zone. Crack initiation occurred at three junction point which was a stress singularity point of upper sheet, lower sheet and the fusion zone. And then crack propagated across the fusion zone. The reason why the fracture occurred at fusion zone was that the hardness of fusion zone was lower than that of base material and heat affected zone. The correlation among maximum load and hardness of fusion zone and EST at fractured position was $R^2=0.9338$. Therefore, this means that hardness and EST can have great impact on maximum load.

철강재료의 고상접합기술 (Solid State Joining of Iron and Steels)

  • 저탄소강은 일반적으로 용접성이 우수하지만 완전한 접합 강도와 용접부에서의 결함을 방지하기 위해서는 많은 주위가 필요하다. 용접부의 기계적 성질은 그 미세구조에 따라 좌우되는데, 이 구조는 모재의 화학조성, 용접 조건 그리고 후열처리에 의하여 결정이 된다. 이와 같이 용융용 접에 의한 저탄소강의 접합부는 저탄소함량으로 응고 균열에 대한 저항이 높다. 그러나 탄소의 함량이 증가하므로서 용접성은 저하하여, 0.3% 이상에서 용접부는 과열, 과냉, 저온 균열과 porosity에 취약하게 된다. 구조용강애 있어서는 용접성에 대한 일반적인 기준이 없으므로 이 러한 재료는 모재와 용접부의 기계적 성질, 고온 및 저온 균열성, 열간 및 냉각가공성등을 고려 하게 된다. 그러나 가장 중요한 것은 용접부의 신뢰도이다. 탄소강과 저합금강에 있어서 용접은 높은 강도를 얻을 수 있어야 하며 접합부에서 모재의 원래의 특성을 유지하여야 하고 결함이 없어야 할 것이다. 이와 같은 결함은 모재의 융접 이하에서 접합을 실시하는 고상접합으로 충 분히 억제할 수가 있다. 고상접합에서는 근본적인 미세조직의 결정화도 피할 수 있으며 고온균 일과 같은 결함의 위험도 배제할 수 있다. 고상접합은 용융용접과는 달리 모재를 용융시키지 않고 고체상태에서 접합을 하는데, 신금속 및 신소재의 개발과 첨단산업의 발달로 고상접합 기 술이 크게 각광을 받고 발전하게 되었다. 이와 같은 접합기술의 발전으로 기존의 용접으로는 접합이 불가한 소재, 용접기술의 적용이 곤란한 복잡한 형상, 복합기능 소재, 고품질 및 고정밀 성이 요구되는 소재등이 접합이 가능하게 되었다. 이러한 접합기술로는 brazing, 확산접합, 마찰 용접 등이 주로 많이 이용되고 있다. Brazing은 융점이 낮은 filler metal이 모재의 사이에서 용 융상태로 유입되어 냉각되면서 접합되는 방식이고 확산접합은 모재의 접합계면에서 원자의 상호 확산으로 접합을 하게 된다. 한편 마찰용접은 계면에서 회전에 의한 마찰열고 접합하는 방식 이다. 본 기술해설에서는 이러한 고상접합 기술을 이용한 철강재료의 접합에 대하여 고찰하도록 하겠다.

MBF 20으로 브레이징한 STS304 콤팩트 열교환기 접합부의 미세조직에 미치는 가열속도의 영향 (Effect of Heating Rates on Microstructures in Brazing Joints of STS304 Compact Heat Exchanger using MBF 20)

  • Effect of heating rate on microstructure of brazed joints with STS 304 Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger (PCHE),which was manufactured as large-scale($1170(L){\times}520(W)){\times}100(T)$, mm), have been studied to compare bonding phenomenon. The specimens using MBF 20 was bonded at $1080^{\circ}C$ for 1hr with $0.38^{\circ}C/min$ and $20^{\circ}C/min$ heating rate, respectively. In case of a heating rate of $20^{\circ}C/min$, overflow of filler metal was observed at the edge of a brazed joints showing the height of filler metal was decreased from $100{\mu}m$ to $68{\mu}m$. At the center of the joints, CrB and high Ni contents of ${\gamma}$-Ni was existed. For the joints brazed at a heating rate of $0.38^{\circ}C/min$, the height of filler was decreased from $100{\mu}m$ to $86{\mu}m$ showing the overflow of filler was not appeared. At the center of the joints, only ${\gamma}$-Ni was detected gradating the Ni contents from center. This phenomenon was driven from a diffusion amount of Boron in filler metal. With a fast heating rate $20^{\circ}C/min$, diffusion amount of B was so small that liquid state of filler metal and base metal were reacted. But, for a slow heating rate $0.38^{\circ}C/min$, solid state of filler metal due to low diffusion amount of B reacted with base metal as a solid diffusion bonding.

고주파유도용접된 열교환기용 BAS121합금튜브의 기계적 특성에 미치는 인발조건의 영향 (Effects of Drawing Parameters on Mechanical Properties of BAS121 Alloy Tubes for Heat-exchangers by High Frequency Induction Welding)

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the optimum drawing parameter for BAS121 welded tubes. The BAS121 aluminium alloy tubes with 25 mm in external diameter and 1.3 mm in thickness for heat-exchangers were manufactured by high frequency induction welding with the V shaped convergence angle $6.5^{\circ}$ and power input 55 kW. With increasing the reduction of area ($13,\;21\%$) by drawing, tensile strength was increased and elongation was decreased. With increasing the reduction of area by drawing, hardness in weld metal increased rapidly, while that of base metal increased slowly. In the specimen with the outer diameter smaller than 22 mm, hardness of weld metal was higher than that of base metal. The optimum drawing parameter of area reduction in BAS121 alloys was estimated about $13\%$ because of the work hardening of welds.
