A study of 10.5 GHz band Doppler radar for non-contact type hydrometer (비접촉식 유속계를 위한 10.5 GHz 대역 도플러 레이더에 대한 연구)

  • A Doppler radar is a radar using the doppler effect of the returned echoes from targets to measure their radial velocity. To be more specific the microwave signal sent by the radar antenna's directional beam is reflected toward the radar and compared in frequency, up or down from the original signal, allowing for the direct and highly accurate measurement of target velocity component in the direction of the beam. In this paper, we designed the doppler radar composed of 10.5 GHz band DROs(Dielectric Resonator Oscillator), $90^{\circ}C$ branch line coupler, single balanced mixer and $4{\times}4$ array antenna of high gain, high directivity, for non-contact type hydrometer. Fabricated Doppler radar can detect slow moving objects.

  • This paper presents the design and measurement of a flight model for a Ku-Band Linearized Channel Amplifier. All MMICs, Variable Gain Amplifier (VGA), Variable Voltage Attenuator ('.IVA), Branch line Coupler and Detector for Pre-distorter are fabricated using a Thin-Film Hybrid process. The performance of the fabricated module is verified through the radio frequency circuit simulation tool and electrical function test in space environment.

  • ln this paper, a new active phase shifter is proposed using a vector sum method, and it is shown that the proposed phase shifter is more efficient than the others in size, power, number of circuits, and gain. Also a unique digital phase control method of the circuit is suggested. The proposed scheme was designed and implemented using a Wilkinson power combiner/divider, a branch line 3dB quadrature hybrid coupler and variable gain amplifiers (VGAs) using dual gate FETs (DGFETs). Furthermore, it is also shown that the proposed scheme is more efficient and works properly with the digital phase control method.

  • This paper proposed a new balanced power amplifier using the reflected input of conventional balanced power amplifiers composed of branch line hybrid coupler. In general, the single-ended amplifier in balanced amplifiers does not have the perfect matching, so the reflected input power, in other words the leakage power, is terminated conventionally at the isolation port of hybrid coupler. However in this work, the leakage power is injected into the auxiliary amplifier, and its output power is combined to the output power of balanced amplifier. Therefore output power, efficiency, and 2-tone IMD3 performances of the proposed balanced amplifier are highly improved compared to the conventional balanced amplifier. For the verification of the proposed balanced amplifier, a conventional balanced amplifier and the proposed balanced amplifier are designed, fabricated and measured, and the measured results are compared. The proposed balanced amplifier shows the improvement in the output power(Pout), power added efficiency (PAE), and 2-tone IMD3 by 3dB, 5.2%, and $5{\sim}10dBc$, respectively, from the measurement.

  • In this paper, in order to obtain a large differential phase shift with a little change in applied voltage, a ferroelectric reflective load circuit has been designed on top of barium strontium titanate $(Ba,Sr)TiO_3$ [BST] thin film. The design of the ferroelectric reflection-type phase shifter is based on a reflection theory of terminating circuit, which has a reflection-type analogue phase shifter with two ports terminated in symmetric phase-controllable reflective networks. To achieve large amounts of phase shift in low bias-voltage range, the effects of change of capacitance and transmission line connected with two coupled ports of a 3-dB $90^{\circ}$ branch-line hybrid coupler have been investigated. A large phase shift with a small capacitance change in the parallel terminating circuit has been demonstrated in the paper.

  • The PSK carrier signal recovery circuit using a six-port phase correlator was analyzed and the circuit structure is proposed in this paper. The proposed carrier signal recovery circuit that is made of reflection element and six-port phase correlator, which is comprised of a power divider and three hybrid branch line couplers, give a simple structure and can be fabricated without no difficulty. The circuit recovers the carrier signal of BPSK and QPSK modulation signal. The proposed scheme can be utilized as a basis structure for high-mode PSK carrier signal recovery. By simulation results, the recovered signal by the proposed circuit shows a good carrier signal characteristic with CW signal of a constant phase($23.4^{\circ}$) and ${\pm}0.8^{\circ}$ phase error due to glitch conditions.

  • In order to obtain a low-loss ferroelectric phase shifter, the reflection-type phase shifter with ferroelectric defected ground structure (DGS) resonators has been designed in this paper. The proposed phase shifter is consist of a 3-dB $90^{\circ}$ branch-line hybrid coupler and terminated reflective circuit with tunable ferroelectric DGS resonator. The ferroelectric DGS unit structure can provide high Q resonator characteristic at high frequencies. The design parameters of equivalent circuit for the tunable DGS resonator are derived by using simple circuit analysis method and three-dimensional full wave finite element method. The fabricated phase shifter has an insertion loss of better than 3.4dB at 13.5GHz.

  • A development of an efficient 14.0~14.5GHz 3 Watt SSPA is described in this paper, which is applicable to the very small aperture terminal(VSAT) for bidirectional data and voice signal transmission in low cost and with small size. The SSPA consists of two stages of low noise amplifiers using the low noise GaAs FETs. two stages of medium power amplifiers using the medium power GaAs FETs, and three stages of power amplifiers including a balanced amplifier using an internally matched power GaAs FET. The achieved with this seven stage amplifiers are 42dB signal power gain, 7dB noise figure, 35dBm output power at 1dB gain compression point and 2.0 and 1.5 input and output VSWR respectively.

  • In this paper, high LO-RF isolation 94 GHz MMIC single-balanced mixer was designed and fabricated using a branch line coupler and a ${\lambda}/4$ transmission line. The 94 GHz MMIC single-balanced mixer was designed using the 0.1 ${\mu}m$ InGaAs/InAlAs/GaAs Metamorphic HEMT(MHEMT) diode. The fabricated MHEMT was obtained the cut-off frequency($f_T$) of 189 GHz and the maximum oscillation frequency($f_{max}$) of 334 GHz. The designed MMIC single-balanced mixer was fabricated using 0.1 ${\mu}m$ MHEMT MMIC process. From the measurement, the conversion loss of the single-balanced mixer was 23.1 dB at an LO power of 10 dBm. The LO-RF isolations of single-balanced mixer was obtained 45.5 dB at 94.19 GHz. We obtained in this study a higher LO-RF isolation compared to some other balanced mixers in millimeter-wave frequencies.

Metamaterial CRLH Structure-based Balun for Common-Mode Current Indicator

  • We proposed a new PCB-type 'common-mode current($I_c$) and differential-mode current($I_d$) detector' working for fast detection of $I_c$ and $I_d$ from the differential-mode signaling, with miniaturization effect and possibility of cheaper fabrication. In order to realize this device, we suggest a branch-line-coupler balun having a composite right- and left-handed(CRLH) one-layer microstrip phase-shifting line as compact as roughly ${\lambda}_g/14$. The presented balun obviously is different from the conventional bent-&-folded delay lines or slits on the ground for coupling the lines on the top and bottom dielectrics. As we connect the suggested balun output ports of the differential-mode signal lines via the through-port named U and coupled-port named L, $I_c$ and $I_d$ will appear at port ${\Delta}$ and port ${\Sigma}$ of the present device, in order. The validity of the design scheme is verified by the circuit-and numerical electromagnetic analyses, and the dispersion curve proving the metamaterial characteristics of the geometry. Besides, the examples of the $I_c$ and $I_d$ indicator are observed as the even and odd modes in differential-mode signal feeding. Also, the proposed device is shown to be very compact, compared with the conventional structure.
