  • This paper describes the braking performance of the eddy current brake for high speed trains according to the number of poles. The eddy current brake systems have to be equipped with the maximum braking force and deceleration in the given volume or mass, high braking force rate, as small normal forces as possible and stable construction. The parameters, such as the number of poles, electric ampere turns, slot width have influence on the braking force characteristics. In this paper, the effect of braking performance from the variation of the number poles is calculated by using FEM, the number of the pole which makes the maximum braking force is proposed.

  • Disc brakes and brake linings are part of the braking system in automobiles; this system works due to the braking power between the disc and pad. Vehicle braking systems have complex environments due to the geometry of the disk and pad, the material properties, the braking conditions, etc. Braking energy is converted into thermal energy during the braking process, due to the frictional heat between the disc brake and pad. This heat is changed to a heat flux, which affects the thermal stress of the disc. The purpose of this study was to use the fluid dynamics software ANSYS CFX to investigate the inner flow characteristics of the air and the heat transfer of the disc, and to analyze the effects on the thermal stress of the disc brake.

  • This paper deals with the design of a touch free eddy-current brake for high speed transportation systems by using 2-dimensional Finite Element Method (2-D FEM). The eddy current brake systems have to equipped with maximum braking force and deceleration at the given volume or mass, high braking force at small rate, attraction forces as small as possible and stable construction. The parameters, such as the number of pole, electric ampere-turns and slot width have influence on these braking characteristics. For the magnet to satisfy above-mentioned performance in high speed, the braking performance according to variation of the parameters are analyzed by the 2-D FEM. In addition, the magnet stack width is determined from equivalent stack width that is calculated by solution of the Field with scalar potential. From these results, the magnet of optimized configuration with maximum braking force and minimum attraction force is designed by the process of detail design.

차량 선회 안정성을 위한 휠 슬립 제어시스템 개발 (Development of a Wheel Slip Control System for Vehicle Cornering Stability)

  • The wheel slip control systems are able to control the braking force more accurately and can be adapted to different vehicles more easily than conventional braking control systems. In order to achieve the superior braking performance through the wheel slip control, real-time information such as the tire braking force at each wheel is required. In addition, the optimal target slip values need to be determined depending on the braking objectives such as minimum braking distance, stability enhancement, etc. In this paper, a wheel slip control system is developed for maintaining the vehicle stability based on the braking monitor, wheel slip controller and optimal target slip assignment algorithm. The braking monitor estimates the tire braking force, lateral tire force and brake disk-pad friction coefficient utilizing the extended Kalman filter. The wheel slip controller is designed based on the sliding mode control method. The target slip assignment algorithm is proposed to maintain the vehicle stability based on the direct yaw moment controller and fuzzy logic. The performance of the proposed wheel slip control system is verified in simulations and demonstrates the effectiveness of the wheel slip control in various road conditions.

Braking performance of working rail-mounted cranes under wind load

  • Rail-mounted cranes can be easily damaged by a sudden gust of wind while working at a running speed, due to the large mass and high barycenter positions. In current designs, working rail-mounted cranes mainly depend on wheel braking torques to resist large wind load. Regular brakes, however, cannot satisfactorily stop the crane, which induces safety issues of cranes and hence leads to frequent crane accidents, especially in sudden gusts of wind. Therefore, it is necessary and important to study the braking performance of working rail mounted cranes under wind load. In this study, a simplified mechanical model was built to simulate the working rail mounted gantry crane, and dynamic analysis of the model was carried out to deduce braking performance equations that reflect the qualitative relations among braking time, braking distance, wind load, and braking torque. It was shown that, under constant braking torque, there existed inflection points on the curves of braking time and distance versus windforce. Both the braking time and the distance increased sharply when wind load exceeded the inflection point value, referred to as the threshold windforce. The braking performance of a 300 ton shipbuilding gantry crane was modeled and analyzed using multibody dynamics software ADAMS. The simulation results were fitted by quadratic curves to show the changes of braking time and distance versus windforce under various mount of braking torques. The threshold windforce could be obtained theoretically by taking derivative of fitted curves. Based on the fitted functional relationship between threshold windforce and braking torque, theoretical basis are provided to ensure a safe and rational design for crane wind-resistant braking systems.

Performance Analysis of the Eddy Current Braker with Multi-layer Rotor Considering Constant Braking Torque

  • Study of an accurate and robust braking control method is required as a technical improvement to the servo system. In particular, the braker exhibiting constant braking performance under speed variation conditions of the prime mover needs to be investigated. In this paper, the braking torque of the eddy current braker between the electromagnet stator and rotating disk is analyzed. The torque-speed characteristics and accurate disk construction are represented. From the computer simulation results, it was found that eddy current braking torque is linear or approximately constant over the desired speed range depending on the rotor material, disk construction, pole number and pole displacement of the stator. These relations are confirmed by experimental results.

  • Anti-lock Braking System(ABS) is a device which prevents the wheels form locked up under emergency braking of a vehicle. So it helps the vehicle to maintain the steerability and shortens the braking distance by maintaining optimal frictional force during braking since the tire road slip is controlled in acceptable range. Recently, ABS is accepted as a standard equipment in vehicles, especially in commercial vehicles(bus and trucks). Commercial vehicles don´t use hydraulic lines but use pneumatic lines for braking system mostly.   • 열차제어시스템에서 열차간 추돌을 방지하기 위한 안전간격은 열차의 비상제동에 따른 제동거리를 기반으로 한다. 제동거리 성능평가는 동역학적 해석과 시운전시험을 통한 확인이 있으나 두 방법 모두 차륜과 레일의 점착계수의 약화 등과 같은 조건을 모두 고려할 수 없기 때문에 열차제어시스템의 설계에 활용하기에는 충분하지 않다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 다양한 환경을 고려할 수 있는 몬테카를로 방법을 이용하여 제동성능을 분석하고자 하였다. 제동모델은 비상제동에서 사용하는 공기제동을 기초로 하였으며, 제동압력, 제동효율, 제동 마찰계수, 점착계수, 차량의 질량분포 등을 고려할 수 있도록 모델링하였다. 영향 인자 분포의 변화에 따른 제동성능의 변화를 검토하고 이를 바탕으로 제동장치의 품질 제어를 통해 제동성능은 개선될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 또한, 열차를 구성하는 차량 편성에 따라 제동성능의 변화를 확인하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 향후 열차제어시스템의 안전간격 설계의 기초자료로 활용될 뿐 아니라 철도차량의 제동성능 향상의 근거자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.

운행 자동차에 대한 정적 및 동적 제동력 검사 시스템의 제동력 특성 비교 (Comparison in Braking Force Characteristics for the Static and Dynamic Braking Force Inspection System about Vehicles in Service)

  • Braking force inspection of vehicles in service is certainly one of the most important characteristics that affect vehicle safety. Up to now, in domestic country, the regular safety inspection of vehicles in service has been tested with a roller type brake test (a static braking force inspection system). But, in EU and USA etc. in recent years, it has been tested with a plate type brake test (a dynamic braking force inspection system). In this study, to compare the characteristics of above two test systems, the correlations for the results of braking force are evaluated statistically. As the results, in the case of main braking force, the range of the $R^2$ of the deviation for the left and right side is 0.5386 ~ 0.6231 in the rear axle and 0.0032 ~ 0.0052 in the front axle respectively, then the $R^2$ in the front axle is lower than that in the rear axle and the total variation is unexplained by the least-squares regression line statistically. Also, the p-value for the deviation of the left and right in the front axle is 0.4839 ~ 0.5755, then it has nonsignificant in the front axle. Therefore, the static braking force inspection system can not reflect the inertia force that there is a load transfer from the rear axle to the front axle during braking. Accordingly, it is necessary to adopt the dynamic braking force inspection system which can reflect the inertia force on the regular vehicle safety inspection in domestic country.

Capacitance Estimation Method of DC-Link Capacitors for BLDC Motor Drive Systems

  • This paper proposes a capacitance estimation method of the dc-link capacitor for brushless DC motor (BLDCM) drive systems. In order to estimate the dc-link capacitance, the BLDCM is operated in quadrant-II or -IV among four-quadrant operation. Quadrant-II and -IV are called reverse braking and forward braking, respectively. During the braking operation of the BLDCM, the capacitor is charged by the phase current and then the voltage is increased during the braking operation time. The capacitor current and voltage can be obtained by using the phase current sensor of BLDCM and the dc-link voltage sensor. The capacitance and be easily obtained by the voltage equation of the capacitor. The proposed method guarantees the reliable and simple calculation of the dc-link capacitance without additional hardware system except several the sensors already installed for the motor control system. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through both the simulation and experimental results.
