  • Many applications involving induction motors that are controlled using variable frequency drives require the ability to stop quickly. These applications include emergency stops, quick stopping of fans, centrifuges, presses, etc. The technique that is widely accepted in the industry for achieving quick stopping makes use of brake resistors in series with a power semiconductor switch. The switch-resistor combination (brake-unit) is applied across the dc bus. The fastest decelerating time achievable depends on the size of the resistors and the switch employed. In this paper, the authors propose a novel method of achieving quick stopping times without the use of any brake-unit. Experimental test results with and without this method on a large inertia motor-load combination show that the proposed stopping method is able to reduce the stopping time significantly compared to normal decelerated stop without the need for a braking unit.

  • Brake system in railway train operates to reduce the speed of the train or to stop the train via changing the kinematic energy into heat energy for emission and so brake system makes an important rule to transport passenger and cargo for safety operation. Recently operators have a matter of grave concern for the verification of performance in brake system. To verify the exact performance of brake system, most of brake test has been carried out on real operating track condition. Therefore we will determine the braked weight of indirect brake system applied in Iran DMU(Diesel Multiple Unit) in accordance with mc leaflet 544-1, which is to enable Iran DMU to achieve the required braking distances in defined situation.

  • Yaw brakes are used in wind turbines to control the orientation of blades to be perpendicular to the wind. These devices are very important machine elements because they are closely related to the overall efficiency of wind turbines. One unit of yaw brakes is composed of a friction pad and a caliper. In this study, a tangential force between the friction pad and the disk is calculated when the brake is acting in 750 kW wind turbine. Then, stress distribution and the deformation of the caliper are calculated using a finite element analysis. An experimental equipment is also developed to verify the exactness of calculated results. The analytical and experimental results are presented and discussed.

  • There are many new technologies for EMU to secure the facilities' safety/validity and maintenance/economical efficiency and technologic competitiveness. For example, now the EMU is using the blending brake technology with electric brake and pneumatic brake and carrying the various performances such as jerk limitation, variable load and blending brake to stop the motor car safely and efficiently. Now we start applying such new methods, taking the whole inspection prior to the installation by analyzing systems' requirements and introducing various system engineering design tools. In this paper, we suggest how to reduce the errors by prelieminarly inspection for the brake facilities using the tools and inspect the needs to analyze the brake facilities' performances.

  • ABS(Antilock Brake System) prevents the wheels from "locking" and improve "handling" during braking. Currently, safety and environmental issues are a major concern in the automotive industry. ABS has become the vital brake system. ABS is composed of sensors for wheel speed, a pressure modulator for controlling the brake pressures in the wheel brake cylinders, and an electronic control unit(ECU) which evaluates the signals from the wheel speed sensors and converts these to commands to control the pressure of modulator. In this paper, ECU developed for commercial vehicles is described. Detection of wheel slip, control algorithms of ABS, and diagnosis method of ECU are presented.

  • Wheel treads of E.M.U. are usually under a heavy thermal load by brake frictional heat between wheel and brake shoe and damaged by repeated thermal and mechanical loads. To examine the cause of wheel tread damage of E.M.U.'s in service running, a systematic approach has been used. This study is composed of three parts. Frictional heat analysis was conducted in the first part by finite element method. Two kinds of brake shoes in service were considered. In the second part, experimental study was carried out on a brake dynamometer. Temperatures were measured for the two brake shoes. And experimental study in service running E.M.U.'s was performed. Wheel and brake shoe temperatures were measured by using thermocouples and temperature indicating strips. Finally metallurgical characteristics were examined by a SEM/EDS and the cause of the wheel damage was analyzed. It seems that aggregated ferrous component is a main cause of the wheel tread damage.

  • In this study an antilocking-brake-system was set up for the single wheel of passenger cars. The control algorithm for the system was programmed by C-language and executed by a 16bit personal computer, which took the role of an electronic control unit. The performance of the antilocking-brake-system was tested using a test rig, which was specially designed and built up for the simulation of braking on the slippery road. The test results were satisfactory. Although the simulation method of the friction characteristics between the tire and the contact surface on the test rig appeared not to be absolutely suitable, the test rig allowed the basic investigation of the influence of the antilocking brake control on the wheel slip.

  • The braking device in railway vehicles decelerates or stops the train by dissipating the thermal energy converted from kinetic energy into the air. Therefore, the brake system is crucial for safety. In this paper, we performed a study on an electromechanical brake actuator using an electrical motor as an alternative to pneumatic air cylinders to reduce the idle running time in braking, which subsequently increases braking distance, and to ensure reliable response characteristics. Especially, to analyze the response characteristics of the electromechanical brake actuator, we measure the delay time, response time and power consumption compared to the air cylinder. It is confirmed that the electromechanical brake actuator can reduce reaction time by 0.1 seconds (Braking Action) and 0.46 seconds (Brake Release) compared to the air cylinder.

  • According to the measured results of KTX brake squeal noise in this study, high level brake noise occurred in a wide frequency range, 100~18,000Hz. To identify the sources of the brake squeal noise, unstable vibration modes due to brake disc/pad interaction were analyzed under various conditions by the finite element method. Complex eigenvalues for a brake unit with a disc and four pads were obtained. It was found that the real parts of the complex eigenvalues, that is, unstable vibration modes, were closely related to friction coefficients, pressure on the brake cylinders, elastic moduli of the components, and other conditions.

  • This paper presents a transient heat transfer analysis of a drum brake shape. The transient heat transfer analysis of automotive drum brakes with frictional contact is performed by using the finite element method. The drum brake type studied in the page is the internally expanding one in which two shoes fitted externally with frictional material are forced outward against surface a rotating drum on the wheel unit. In this case, the braking power is produced by the friction force between a drum and a lining, and is converted into heat. The brake drum has constant material properties. The air inside the drum has temperature-dependent thermal conductivity and enthalpy. Radiation effects are ignored. The result explains the reason why hair crack and cause of drum failure occur. The temperature of drum is in proportion to the drum thickness and nonlinear changes at every points of drum. It's necessary for the decrease of the drum temperature to make the air inside drum flow.
