This paper describes the development of a hybrid-powered wheelchair (HPW) for the elderly. The proposed HPW has novel mechanical and control features compared with conventional powered wheelchairs. An ergonomic back-braking mechanism was designed in order to stop the wheels easily. In terms of control features, the HPW remarkably reduces the muscle power required by combining various assistive functions, such as wheel torque assistance, friction/inertia compensation, gravity compensation, and the one-hand driving algorithm. For wheel torque assistance, strain gauges were attached to the hand-rim in order to measure the wheel torque applied by a human. Gyroscopes and an accelerometer were attached to the wheel and chair respectively for friction and inertia compensation. An inclinometer was attached for gravity compensation and the one-hand driving algorithm was included for patients who can only use one hand. The one-hand driving algorithm controls the angular velocity of the uncontrolled wheel by using a gyroscope and pressure sensors attached to the bottom of the seat. Finally, the performance of the proposed motion assisted algorithm was verified through various experiments.
The stormwater runoff from rest areas in highways are known as more polluted compared to highways because of more vehicle activities. This study is performed to find pollutant characteristics in the rest areas in the magnitude of statistical pollutant concentrations during storms. Washoff characteristics of pollutants from rest areas by monitoring of rainfall, runoff rate and runoff samples were evaluated. High concentrations of pollutants in runoff were observed at the beginning of runoff and rapid decrease thereafter, indicating that first-flush effects are clearly occurred. Event Mean Concentrations(EMCs) of TSS, COD, TN, and TP are estimated to be in the range of 31.04-127.11mg/L, 35.5-369.5mg/L, 2.62-9.86 mg/L, and 0.53-1.96mg/L, respectively. Heavy metals in runoff showed relatively high values, possibly due to the abrasion of brake pad or tire while cars are slowly moving for parking. EMCs of total Pb, total Cu, and total Ni are in the range of $1206-16293{\mu}g/L$, $237-7906{\mu}g/L$, and $53-6372{\mu}g/L$, respectively. Pollutant loading per rest area calculated by using EMC, flowrate and target area is also described for each pollutant.

To catch the surf clam, Mactra chinensis, in sand bottom using the excavating performance of water jet, the authors had constructed the experimental hydraulic jet dredge by the result of water tank experiment of previous report, and also were carried out the field experiments in the surf clam fishing ground near Kunsan, Korea from 5th to 30th of October, 1990. The results obtained are as follows. 1) Excavating depth was more than 10~11cm at the 1500cm/s water-jet velocity in the fine sand and muddy sand. 2) Towing tention was only 105$\pm$5kg in the 6.7cm/s towing speed. 3) Average catch amount per unit towing area was 0.42kg/m super(2) and it was 1.2~1.6 times comparing on the conventional dredge. 4) Experimental hydraulic jet dredge did not nearly brake the surf clam. 5) Turbidity variation by the water jet of dredge was not serious in the fishing ground; On the surface, when the depth is more than 5.2m, turbidity variation was not found at all, and on the 3m layer above the bottom, turbidity variations was increased 9~11ppm at 1m backward from the dredge, but it was gradually decrease, and it was nearly not at 9m backward from the dredge.

In this study, core technologies of a traction system on a mountain tram operating on the track of mountain road full of sharp curves and steep gradients were developed. In domestic mountain resort areas, sometimes the transportation service is not provided in winter because of ice and heavy snow on roads, so a mountain railway service independent of the climate and geographic conditions is needed. A traction system was designed taking into account of the power of a traction motor to climb the gradient of 120 ‰, which is common in domestic mountainous areas. and power transmission system was designed to consider the installation space for the traction system. In addition, a reduction gear and a propeller shaft were developed. An elastic pinion was developed and applied to the rack & pinion bogie system for steep gradient so that noise and vibration generated by contact between the steel gears could be reduced. Impact comparison tests showed that the vibration level of the elastic pinion is one-third lower than that of previous steel pinion. Independent rotating wheels and axles were developed for the bogie system to operate on the sharp curve of a 10 meter radius. In addition, the band braking system was developed to enhance the braking force during running on the steep gradient. A test for the braking force showed it exerts the required braking force. The performance of the developed core components were verified by the tests and finally they were applied to the bogie system running on the track of steep gradient and sharp curve.

Recently, there have been frequent occurrences of bridge fires. Fires in cable-supported bridges can damage and brake cables due to high temperatures. In this study, fire scenarios that can occur on cable-supported bridges were set up. In addition, based on the results of vehicle fire tests, a fire intensity model was proposed and cable heat transfer analyses were performed on a target bridge. The analyses results demonstrated that temperature rises were identified on cables with a smaller cross-sectional area. Furthermore, vehicles other than tankers did not exceed the fire resistance criteria. When the tanker fire occurred on a bridge shoulder, the minimum diameter cable exceeded the fire resistance criteria; the height of the cable exceeding the fire resistance criteria was approximately 14 m from the surface. Therefore, the necessity of countermeasures and reinforcements of fire resistance was established. The results of this study confirmed that indirect evaluation of the temperature changes of bridge cables under fire is possible, and it was deemed necessary to further study the heat transfer analysis considering wind effects and the serviceability of the bridge when the cable temperature rises due to fire.

This paper provides the numerical results for the self-propulsion performance in waves of a car ferry vessel with damage in one of its twin-screw propulsion systems without flooding the engine room. The numerical simulations were carried out according to the Safe Return to Port (SRtP) regulation made by the Lloyd's register, where the regulation requires that damaged passenger ships should have an ability to return to port with a speed of 6 knots in a Beaufort 8 sea condition. For the validation of the present numerical analysis study, the resistance performance and the self-propulsion performance of the car ferry in intact and damaged conditions in calm water were calculated, which showed a satisfactory agreement with the model test results of Korea Research Institute of Ship and Ocean engineering (KRISO). Finally, the numerical simulation of self-propulsion performance in waves of the damaged car ferry ship was carried out for a normal sea state and for a Beaufort 8 sea state, respectively. The estimated average Brake Horse Power (BHP) for keeping the damaged car ferry ship advancing at a speed of 6 knots in a Beaufort 8 sea state reached about 47% of BHP at MCR condition or about 56% of BHP at NCR condition of the engine determined at the design state. In conclusion, it can be noted that the engine power of the damaged car ferry ship in single propulsion condition is sufficient to satisfy the SRtP requirement.

This paper presents a braking model that can be used to design the safety distance of a train control system and a train braking system to increase the volume of traffic. For the braking model, a train set (electric multiple unit composed 6 cars) was tested. The factors that can affect the braking characteristics include the friction coefficient, braking pressure, and regenerative braking. The braking pressure was classified into service and emergency braking and reflected the characteristics of the vehicle. The external force acting on the running railway car was tested in accordance with KS R 9217, and the running resistance of the train is presented in the form of a polynomial. The dynamic behavior of the train running on a straight flat line was simulated using UM 8.3. The results were validated with experimental data, and the results were reasonable. With the validated model, a stopping distance was determined according to the initial braking speed and compared with the deceleration braking model. In addition, a safety distance for the train control system could be changed according to the frictional coefficient limits. These results are expected to be useful for analyzing the dynamic behavior of trains, and for analyzing various railway environments and improving the braking performance.
The safety interval to prevent collision between trains in a train control system is based on the braking distance according to the emergency braking of the train. The evaluation of the braking performance is based on the longitudinal train dynamics or the commissioning test in the test track, but since the conditions such as the weakening of the adhesion coefficient between the wheel and rail can not all be considered, these conventional methods are not sufficient to design of the train control systems. Therefore, in this study, the Monte Carlo Method (MCM) which can consider various environments is used to analyze braking performance and limitations. The braking model is based on the air braking used in the emergency braking and is modeled to take into account the braking pressure, efficiency, friction coefficient, adhesion condition, and vehicle mass distribution. It is confirmed that braking performance can be improved by controlling the quality of braking device. In addition, the change of the braking performance was confirmed according to the vehicle constituting the train. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic information for designing safety clearance for the train control systems and as a basis for improving the braking performance of railway vehicles.

Due to the development of the industrial revolution, regulations on exhaust emissions have been continuously strengthened to reduce the rapidly increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The use of environmentally friendly fuels is essential to meet these regulations. Hydrogen has been attracting attention as a future environmentally friendly fuel, but due to its material properties, it faces significant challenges in handling and storage. As an alternative, ammonia has been proposed. Ammonia can be easily liquefied at room temperature compared to hydrogen and has a high energy density. In order to examine the applicability of ammonia as an engine fuel, experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of changes in combustion control parameters in a direct injection ammonia combustion engine. The experiments were conducted by varying two variables: spark timing and excessive air ratio. Observations were made on combustion stability and the trends of exhaust emissions such as nitrogen oxides and unburned ammonia under the conditions of an engine speed of 1,500 rpm and medium to high loads (brake torque of 200 Nm). By optimizing the combustion control parameters, conditions for stable combustion even when using ammonia as the sole fuel were identified, and plans are underway to apply strategies for future expansion of the operating range.

South Korea has been producing asbestos over 60 years. The use of asbestos was over 50 years for production of asbestos slate and 27 years for asbestos friction materials including asbestos textile and brake-lining. Thus, it can be supposed that asbestos related diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma could be found in the vulnerable workers exposed to asbestos in 1955-1975, given the average latency period of 10-30 years. Asbestos was produced primarily by Japanese during World War II In Korea. The production of chrysotile peaked to 4,815 tons in 1944. From 1978 to 1984, 10,000 tons of asbestos were produced annually. However, the production was interrupted by raising labor costs and extinction of mine reserves, and finally they had to depend on import for the need of asbestos. In 1945, there were 16 asbestos mines, in total, with the addition of new asbestos mines in South Korea. Imports of asbestos was increased from 74,000 tons to 95,000 tons during the period of 1976 - 1992. But the imports was reduced to 88,000 tons in 1995. Since, in addition to the import of asbestos itself, the imports of asbestos products were increased as well and the accumulation of asbestos reached to 30,000 tons during the period of 1964 to 1993. In 1965, there was only one asbestos company with 207 employees. But the size of asbestos industry has been expanded so much that 118 asbestos companies could be found in 1993 with 1,476 workers. However, there was no record on the survey of asbestos concentration to which workers were exposed in any companies in 1983. The record of the air-borne concentration of the asbestos in textile working places in 1984 showed 6.7 fibers/cc by geometric mean(GM), but it was reduced to 1.2 fibers/cc in 1993. GMs of asbestos in working places for construction materials and asbestos textiles were also decreased from 1.7 fibers/cc to 0.55 fibers/cc during the period of 1984 - 1996.
