  • After bibliographic study on function of the brain(腦, nao) on the basis of zangxiang theory(藏象論的), the theory of visceral activities), the following conclusions were obtained: 1. Brain is the organ conglomerated with marrow(隨, sui) between Baihui(百會) and Fengfu(風府) 2. Brain has different function and names according to the parts. 3. Brain is on anatomical view the extraordinary organ(奇恒之府, qiheng zhi fu) and stores clarified air(氣, qi) of fresh air. 4. Brain is the places where the viral essence (精, jeong) of five viscera is activated. 5. Brain is the places where the vital essence congeries into the mind(神, shen) Yang form of the essence. 6. The mind converted from the brain emerges in the whole body the sensory organs and carries vital function. 7. Brain reservoirs the mind, while the heart(心, xm) is thought to make judgement inroyght the speculation on the outward stimulus of matter and give orders to the mind in the chest.

  • Overall purposes of neuropsychological tests are summarized as follows: 1) Indentifying brain damage in individuals who have symptoms of uncertain etiology; 2) Assessing the extent and nature of deficits for forensic purposes and planning appropriate intervention; 3) Evaluating the effects of intervention or rehabilitation; 4) Examining the effects of various types of brain damage across different populations; and 5) Testing theoretical propositions about brain-behavior relationship. Of the neuropsychological tests, the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery(LNNB) is easily transportable, relatively inexpensive, and performable by trained technician. The Korean version of LNNB is now being designed and will be used clinically in the near future. Localization and equipotential theories of brain function had been prevalent until Luria's theory of brain function. Brain, composed of three brain units in the theory, is the functional system in which each brain area has specific function and produce the function-related behavior. LNNB consists of 11 clinical scales, 5 summary scales, 8 localization scales, and 28 factor scales.

  • This treatise is written in order to solve the important contradiction between the two theories; in oriental medicine psychological function is responsible for heart, but in western one it is responsible for brain. So we take the methods of studying in the aspects of morphological characteristics(MC) and visceral manifestation theory(VMT, 藏象論) and others about two organs-heart and brain. Brain(頭腦) is preferred to understand as a structure which is manifesting mental activity of heart. So the brain can be named with external heart(外心) corresponding to the relation of kidney(外 and external kidney. Saying conversely, the nutritional foundation of the mental function is the blood of heart, but the enlightening and insightful features of mentality make it's own residence move to the organ in the uppermost and positive site, that is head. And the close relationships on mental functions between heart and brain were discussed in various aspects, like investigation on east and west etymological literature, or Jiu gong and Taoist theory as well as Me and VMT, These understandings can make us know about the pathology of brain by itself. It has deep relations with heart fire and heart blood and kidney essence, and gastrointestinal function and liver with lung additionally. In another point, it makes the highly complicated psychological functions to be explained free from body relatively, and so can do a role in the complement of the strict 5 viscera theory.

  • Tremor is the common symptom clinically and often be continuous with the brain cortex function. Scalp Acupuncture was designed by connecting the Meridian theory with brain cortex functional theory. We carried out four patients with tremor. We operated Scalp Acupuncture on the chorea-tremor area in connection with precentral gyrus which is in charge of the motion of the opposite part of body about 20 minutes. Herbal medication and the other oriental medical treatments were performed. After our treatments, tremor and some other symptoms were improved.

  • This study was conducted to explore the direction of culinary education based brain-based education with analysis of comprehensive research. Questionnaire was completed by frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis and regression analysis by using SPSS 21. The purpose of this study was to investigate the educational system for creative development through cooking sources and to develop brain-based learning theory, and thus to generate the characteristics and effects of the practice in culinary educational context. The basic principles of brain- based learning are brain plasticity, emotional brain, and ecological brain. Students need to be able to enrich their understanding of social interaction so that social brain's function will be activated through consistent and high-quality feedback. Likewise, students should be capable of collecting everything what they have learned. Defining main ideas and goal of the lesson, four factors were derived from development of competency, personality, application, and diversity. Regarding to the result of this study, the implications for the development of a brain-base program were suggested.

  • objective to ascertain whether the concept of the therapeutic side is associated with changes in the blind sport mapping that represents the brain function. design Physiological blind spot maps were used as an integer of brain activity before and after acupuncture needling on the meridian point Hapkok(合谷) and Techung(太衝) in the unilateral side decided by double-blind controlled study(20 subjects). setting outpatient clinic participants: adult volunteers intervention twenty subjects were divided into two comparative groups and underwent specific acupuncture therapy on the unilateral side. Blinded examiners obtained reproducible pre and post-acupuncture cortical maps, which were subjected to statistical analysis. main outcome measures Brain activity was demonstrated by reproducible circumferential measurements of cortical hemispheric blind spot maps before and after acupuncture on the unilateral side. in case of acupuncture needling on the ipsilateral side of an enlarged side of bilnd spot, there were reduction of blind spot in 7 cases of 10 subjects, and enlargement in 3 cases. in case of acupuncture needling on the contralateral side of the enlarged side of blind spot, there were enlargement of blind spot in 6 cases of 10 subjects, and reduction in 4 cases. results the significant changes in the blind spots before and after acupuncture were observed Acupuncture needlings on the ipsilateral or contralateral side of an enlarged cortical map were associated with the concept of the therapeutic side traditionally accepted in the oriental medical society. Acupuncture needling on the ipsilateral side of an enlarged blind spot map is associated with the reduction of map, and increaed contralateral cortical activity. Acupuncture needling on the side opposite an enlarged blind spot map is associated with the enlargement of map, and decreased cortical activity. conclusion Reproducible maps of cortical responses can be used to measure the neurological consequences of acupuncture needling. Acupuncture can affect the somatic sensory informations that reach to the contralateral thalamus, and so affect thalamic integration. we found that acupuncture therapy may be associated with an increase or a decrease in brain function depending on the side of acupuncture needling. thus, the traditional concept of the contralateral therapeutic theory in acupuncture approach has the clinical significance in the view of brain function.

  • Western Medicine had been taking the occurrence of a disease as a physical matter and had tried to step forward from this angle till the late twentieth. But lately for about 20 years, a lot of researchers have started to understand the disease and human function as those in holistic system They supposed that the human function was the result of the interactions in 'Mind-Brain-Body' system and tried to explain and prove about the theory at the molecular level. The name of this new field of human science is 'Mind-Body Medicine' and in the center stand the 'Psychoneuroendoimmunology. Traditional Korean Medicine of which the core system was formed 2500 years ago, explains the complex interaction between mind and body with the theory of 'Mind-Brain-Body' system. To research on the correlation between mind and body, we tried to explain from the viewpoint of medical classic about the philosophical background, relations among mind, five viscera, and body, interaction between mind and body.

  • The theory of subjective preference with temporal and spatial factors which include sound signals arriving at both ears is described. Then, auditory evoked potentials which may relate to a primitive subjective response namely subjective preference are discussed. According to such fundamental phenomena, a workable model of human auditory-brain system is proposed. For eample, important subjective attributes, such as loudness, coloration, threshold of preception of a reflection and echo distrubance as well as subjective preference in relation to the initial time delay gap between the direct sound and the first reflection, and the subsequent reverberation time are well described by the autocorrelation function of source signals. Speech clarity, subjective diffuseness as well as subjective preference are related to the magnitude of inter-aural crosscorrelation function (IACC). Even the caktail party effects may be eplained by spatialization of human brain, i.e., independence of temporal and spatial factors.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to review the acupoints used in cocaine studies and interpret the effectiveness in an aspect of meridian theory of Korean medicine. Methods : Authors searched 50 articles in PubMed, 16 in KISS, 9 in OASIS, 40 in NDSL, and 19 in DBPIA, with the keyword of 'cocaine' or 'acupuncture'. The articles written in English only were included. The articles related with cocaine(abuse, dependence, sensitization, intake, withdrawal sign, withdrawal syndrome, reinstatement, seeking) only were subjected. The articles which used manual- or electro-acupuncture were included, and auricular was excluded. Results : The most frequently used acupoint was HT7, while LI4, LU9, ST36, and SP6 were used once respectively. HT7 could be understood to be used from the meaning of the name as well as the theory that Heart Meridian is deeply related with the brain function. LU9 seems to be used to enhance the effect of HT7. LI4 is thought to control reverting yin that flows toward the top of head following the theory of Jang Bu Sang Tong. ST36 appears to be used because it could regulate stress reaction that reverting yin is associated with. SP6 seems to have effect on brain function due to its ability to control spiritual disorder. Conclusions : The acupoints used in the cocaine studies are thought to influence the brain function through diverse mechanism, and Jang Bu Sang Tong theory seems to be involved in the mechanism, at least in part.
