The tactile force sensor was studied using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG). The FBG is able to multiplex easily and is immune to electromagnetic environment. A sensor frame was designed to a cantilever beam type. Strain of a beam is related with the peak shift of a bragg wavelength. Finite Element Method (FEM) was used for getting an appropriate thickness from 0.2 mm to 0.3 mm thick. FEM results showed that 0.3 mm thick was suitable for the force range 10 N. The force resolutions of 0.039 N and 0.113 N were obtained with optical spectrum analyser and tunable Fabry-Perot filter, respectively.
We used the GEANT4 Monte Carlo MC Toolkit to simulate carbon ion beams incident on water, tissue, and bone, taking into account nuclear fragmentation reactions. Upon increasing the energy of the primary beam, the position of the Bragg-Peak transfers to a location deeper inside the phantom. For different materials, the peak is located at a shallower depth along the beam direction and becomes sharper with increasing electron density NZ. Subsequently, the generated depth dose of the Bragg curve is then benchmarked with experimental data from GSI in Germany. The results exhibit a reasonable correlation with GSI experimental data with an accuracy of between 0.02 and 0.08 cm, thus establishing the basis to adopt MC in heavy-ion treatment planning. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov K-S test further ascertained from a statistical point of view that the simulation data matched the experimentally measured data very well. The two-dimensional isodose contours at the entrance were compared to those around the peak position and in the tail region beyond the peak, showing that bone produces more dose, in comparison to both water and tissue, due to secondary doses. In the water, the results show that the maximum energy deposited per fragment is mainly attributed to secondary carbon ions, followed by secondary boron and beryllium. Furthermore, the number of protons produced is the highest, thus making the maximum contribution to the total dose deposition in the tail region. Finally, the associated spectra of neutrons and photons were analyzed. The mean neutron energy value was found to be 16.29 MeV, and 1.03 MeV for the secondary gamma. However, the neutron dose was found to be negligible as compared to the total dose due to their longer range.

We have investigated the high temperature rapid thermal annealing of GaN epilayers in nitrogen atmosphere. Annealing has been performed in a rapid thermal annealing furnace at $950^{\circ}C$. The effect of rapid thermal annealing of GaN was studied by x-ray diffraction. The Bragg peak shifts toward larger angle as the annealing time increases. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the peak slightly increase, followed by decreases, and increases again as the thermal treatment time increases. The improvement of structural properties of the samples was observed after rapid thermal annealing under optimum conditions. This improvement in crystal quality is due to a reduction of the spread in the lattice parameter in epilayers.
We theoretically and experimentally investigate the effect of apodization on the transmission characteristics of linearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings(CFBGs). Based on the UV beam scanning method along a phase mask, we fabricated several apodized CFBGs with different apodization profiles such as Gaussian, Raised-cosine, Blackman, and Hyperbolic tangent. During the UV beam scanning, the phase mask is dithered by a PZT(Piezoelectric transducer) which is precisely controlled by a computer program so that the apodization profiles can be flexibly applied to the grating. We measured the reflection spectra and group delay characteristics of CFBGs with the different apodization profiles, and compared them according to their properties such as reflectivity, sidelobes, and group delay ripple (GDR). The peak-to-peak of GDR could be suppressed to less than 20 ps.
In this paper, we present high-temperature characteristics of tunable all-optic filter using fiber Bragg grating(FBG), including peak reflectivity, FWHM bandwidth, refractive index change along temperature variation. The characteristics of a FBG tunable filter with refractive index change is affected by its thermal stability.
We present the analysis of phase-shifted fiber Bragg gratings by coupled-mode equations. The transmission is expressed as that of a Fabry-Perot resonator with complex reflectance and complex transmittance. The transmission spectrum, the effective cavity length, and the behaviors with different phase-shifts are investigated. A very flattered transmission peak is obtained by introducing three phase-shifts in a grating.
A novel fiber optic sensor is demonstrated using a FBG in PM(Polarization-Maintaining) fiber. Gratings have been written in a Bow-Tie type fiber using the phase mask. The operation of the sensor simply involves monitoring back-reflected Bragg wavelengths from the grating. Since PM fiber has two principal semi-axes with two indices of refraction, two Bragg wavelengths were observed. We have observed the position of Bragg wavelengths for PM FBG shifted simultaneously by either applying the longitudinal strain or temperature change. The wavelength sensitivity of 1.2pm/$\mu$$\varepsilon$ about a longitudinal strain and the wavelength sensitivity of 11.4pm/$^{\circ}C$ about a temperature have been experimentally achieved. The wavelength sensitivity of both longitudinal strain and temperature are approximately same with the reported values for the single mode FBG. On the other hand, the change of separation between Bragg wavelengths was observed by the applying transverse stress. We observed that the separation between two Bragg wavelengths is proportional to the applied transverse stress. The wavelength sensitivity of 14.6 pm/N about a transverse stress has been achieved. We have demonstrated PM FBG sensors can measure the transverse stress independently from the effects of temperature.

Computer code was developed to design waveguide gratings based on coupled-mode equations and the transfer matrix formalism. The experimental set-up has been constructed for inscribing Bragg gratings in planar waveguides with a phase mask and uv laser beam, which enables alignment and packaging of grating devices as well as in-situ performance measurements. Bragg grating has been fabricated on silica planar waveguides with 0.75% Germanium concentration and its transmittance spectrum was measured to have 95% reflectance at the peak wavelength. Optical losses as the function of the misalignment were measured and their usage is described.
Distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) porous silicon (PSi) was generated by an electrochemical etching a bragg structure into a silicon wafer through electrode current in aqueous ethanolic HF solution. DBR PSi exhibiting unique reflectivity was successfully obtained by an electrochemical etching of silicon wafer using square current waveform. The multilayered photonic crystals of DBR PSi exhibited the reflection of a specific wavelength with high reflectivity in the optical reflectivity spectrum. In this work, we have developed a method to create refractive index in Si substrate through intensity of an electric current. The electrochemical process allows for precise control of the structural properties of DBR PSi such as thickness of the porous layer, porosity, and average pore diameter. The number of reflection peak of DBR PSi and its pore size increased as the intensity of electric current increased. This might be a demonstration for the fabrication of specific reflectors or filters.
