  • In this study, we investigated the functional response of aphid parasitoid, Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), on the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Three carbon dioxide concentrations (400, 600, and 1000ppm) and seven host densities (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128) were used during a 24-h period. A type III functional response for A. colemani was fit separately for each CO2 concentration. The estimated handling time (Th) under elevated CO2 (600 ppm and 1000 ppm, 0.015 and 0.014 day) was shorter than that under ambient CO2 (400 ppm, 0.017 day). The proportion of aphids that were parasitized showed the similar characteristic curve under three CO2 concentrations. The highest parasitized rates for A. colemani were 0.57, 0.61, and 0.70 at 16, 32, and 32 aphid density under 400, 600, and 1000ppm, respectively. Although handling time of A. colemani was influenced by elevated CO2 concentrations, the attach rate was not changed much.

  • Biological control of Indian meat moth (Plodia interpunctella ($H\"{u}bner$)) by iterative mass release of its larval parasitoid, Bracon hebetor Say, was tested in a large wheat elevator (diameter 8 m, height 41 m) containing 6,000 t of wheat. Adult parasitoids were released seven times from July 23 to September 3, 2002. The number of parasitoid adults per release time varied from 3,000 to 10,000 so that the total number released was 50,000. The moth population density in the parasitoid-released elevator was maintained at a level of ${\approx}30%$ compared to the moth population in untreated elevators.

  • The silkworm Bombyx mori L. was studied as the potential “host” of popular in Uzbekistan biocontrol ectoparasite, entomophagous Bracon hebetor Say. Being one of representatives of economic-beneficial insects, the silkworm (larvae, pupae and imago) can be used as highly sensitive test organism for revealing of neuro toxic effects of insects venom as well as of their purified components in screening assays. In comparative aspect, except a mulberry silkworm, representatives of Uzbekistan pests cotton-boll worm Helycoverpa armigera Hbn., lesser mulberry pyralid Glyphodes pyloalis Wlk., codling moth Corpocapsa pomonella L., malaria mosquito Anopheles claviger and Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say have been subjected to insect toxic test of bracon venom gland extract (VGE) and its fractions which were obtained by gel-chromatography on Sephadex G-100. The paralyzing effect of the VGE and its fractions was shown in a various degree on the pests.

  • Forty six individuals out of 200 Acronicta rumicis larva were parasitized (23 %) in 2000, 14 individuals out of 60 (23.33 %) in 2001, and 14 individuals out of 62 (22.58 %) in 2002. The mean parasitism rate was $22.97{\pm}0.38%$. The parasitism rate was 36.36 % in May and 52.78 % in October, 2000, 75 % and 50% in May and October 2001, 71.4% and 47.37% in May and October 2002 and it was much higher than other months. Parasitism was occurred from May to October 2000, but it was not in June and August 2001 and June 2002. There was no difference in the monthly mean parasitism rate, but the rate was the highest in May and October. The parasitoid of the larva of A. rumicis was the highest by 77.02% of parasitic wasps, and 13.51% of parasitic flies. It was found that multiparasitism was 4.05 % and hyperparasitism was 5.41 %. In case of parasitic wasps whose parasitism rate is the highest, the rate of Braconidae and Ichneumonidae was 70.18 % and 29.82 % respectively. That is, the former has much higher parasitism rate. The parasitism rate of the larva of A. rumicis was found that Microplitis sp. is $5.28{\pm}0.63%$, Glyptapanteles liparidis $8.62{\pm}3.70%$, and Diadegma sp. $4.02{\pm}1.28%$ respectively.

  • Reproductive incompatibility is an Important factor to select a specific biologlcal control agent for successful augmentation of the corresponding endogenous population. An endoparasitoid, Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov), is an effective control agent to diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) and has been known to be classified into two groups in terms of reproductive incompatibility. This study analyzed an Korean population of C. plutellae in terms of morphological characters and mitochondrial DNA marker, which did not match with either of two reproductive incompatibility groups. These results suggest that a Korean population of C. plutellae can be involved in a novel reproductive group. For any augmentation program of C. plutellae in Korea, reproductive incompatibility should be seriously considered to select a particular exotic population.

  • Biological control of Aphis gossypii by natural enemies was carried out in watermelon from April to June. Aphidius colemani was released 3 times at rate of $2/m^2$ to control A. gossypii(April 24, May 8, and May 22 in 2007). In A. colemani-released plots, A. gossypii showed low population density of < 0.6 per leaf with the highest parasitism of 57.2%, and 2.0~10.6% in the percentage of leaves with aphids. In control, the population of A. gossypii kept on increasing from early May and reached 653.2/leaf on may 29.

  • Pupation site selection behavior of Plodia interpunctella (H$\ddot{u}$bner) in response to its larval parasitoid, Bracon hebetor Say, was evaluated. Under the presence of the parasitoid, more moth larvae pupated in a layer deeper than 5 mm. Because the parasitoid searched for the host mostly in the surface layer (< 5 mm), larvae in deeper layers were able to successfully escape attack by the parasitoid. However, this behavior did not affect the numerical response of the parasitoid. The parasitoid laid more eggs per host larvae when the number of attacked larvae decreased.

  • Several species of the genus Aphidius are used in biological control programs against aphid pests throughout the world and their behavior and physiology are well studied. While the importance of sensory organs in their behavior is understood, their antennal structure remains largely unknown. In this study, the external morphology and distribution of the antennal sensilla on the antennal of both female and male adults of A. colemani were described using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Generally, the filiform antennae of males ($l,515.2{\pm}116.5\;{\mu}m$) are longer than females ($l,275.1{\pm}103.4\;{\mu}m$). Antennae of this species are made up of radicle, scape, pedicel and flagellomeres. Male and female antennae differed in the total number of flagellomeres as 15 in males and 13 in females. The result of SEM observation was characterization and grouping of seven types of receptors into morphological classcs: Bohm bristles, Sensilla placodea, 2 types of S. coeloconica and S. trichodea, and S. basiconica as with a tip pore and with wall pores. In addition, the possible functions of the above sensilla types arc discussed in light of previously published literature; mechanoreception (Bohm bristles, S, coeloconica I & II and S. trichodea) and chemoreception (S. placodea, S. basiconica type I & II).
