세라믹 브라켓의 종류 및 브라켓 슬롯과 와이어 각도에 따른 마찰 저항 차이 (Frictional resistance of different ceramic brackets and their relationship to the second order angulation between bracket slot and wire)

  • 사회 문화적 발달과 함께 심미적 요구가 증가되면서 교정 환자 수의 증가와 함께 교정 치료 중의 심미성에 대한 요구도 늘어나고 있다. 치료 중 심미성을 증진시키기 위한 목적으로 세라믹 브라켓이 개발되어 널리 사용되고 있으나 세라믹 자체의 취성(brittleness), 대합치의 마모뿐만 아니라, 임상적으로 높은 마찰 저항이 그 문제점으로 지적되고 있다. 본 연구는 세라믹 브라켓의 마찰 저항을 알아보고 그 개선방안을 찾는데 지침이 되고자 하는 목적으로 시행하였다. 연구 재료로는 마찰 저항을 줄이기 위해 금속 슬롯이 삽입된 다결정 세라믹 브라켓과 금속 슬롯이 삽우되지 않은 단결정 세라믹 브라켓과 금속 브라켓을 이용하였으며, $.019{\times}.025$ 스테인리스 와이어를 브라켓 슬롯에 대해 $0^{\circ},\;10^{\circ}$의 각도를 부여하여 만능시험기상에서 이동시켜 그때의 정적, 동적 마찰력을 측정하였다. 연구 결과, 전체적인 평균 마찰력은 금속 브라켓, 금속 슬롯이 삽입된 다결정 세라믹 브라켓, 단결정 세라믹 브라켓 순으로 증가하였다. 브라켓 슬롯과 와이어 사이의 각도가 $0^{\circ}$일 때가 $10^{\circ}$일 때에 비해서 낮은 마찰 저항을 보였으며, 브라켓 슬롯과 와이어 사이의 각도가 $10^{\circ}$일 때 단결정 세라믹 브라켓의 동적, 정적 마찰 저항은 금속 브라켓이나 금속 슬롯이 삽입된 다결정 세라믹 브라켓에 비해 유의성 있게 크게 나타났다 (p<0.05). 본 연구를 통해서 금속 브라켓에 비해 세라믹 브라켓, 특히 금속 슬롯이 삽입되지 않은 단결정 세라믹 브라켓의 마찰 저항이 높은 것을 확인할 수 있었으며, 브라켓 슬롯과 와이어간의 각도가 증가하면 마찰 저항도 커지는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 마찰력을 줄이기 위한 세라믹 브라켓의 개발과 함께 교정 치료 시 과도한 치관 경사를 막음으로써 마찰 저항을 줄이고 심미성을 유지하면서 치료의 효율을 높이도록 해야할 것이다.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate some clinical aspect of the crown inclination in Korean's naturally occuring optimal occlusion, and to statistically compare the crown inclination at Andrews' FA points group and another bracket slot level group based on marginal ridges. The materials consisted of study models of 30 patients (14; Korean's males, 16; Korean's females) who have nonorthodontic normal occlusion. The results were as follows; 1. Mean, standard deviation, range of clinical inclination in the Andrews' FA points and another bracket slot level were obtained. 2. Statistically difference between Andrews' FA points group and bracket slot level group based on marginal ridge was non significant (p > 0.05). But standard deviation and range in FA points group was more stability than marginal ridge group. 3. A lingual crown inclination at FA points in the upper posterior teeth existed (canines through molars). 4. The lingual crown inclination at FA points in the lower dentition progressively increased from the incisors through the second molars.

  • Metal brackets were recycled by variable methods for economic reason. Such recycling methods had a great effect on bracket slot width and bonding strength. Therefore, the recycling methods that don't change the properties of original bracket were suggested. In this study, debonded brackets were recycled with 30 kinds of solvents and bracket surfaces were examined by S.E.M. (Super IIIA, ISI International Scientific Instruments, Japan) and Stero Microscope (Sz-Tr, Olympus Tokyo, Japan) methods. The following results were obtained. 1. Thermosetting resin adhesives (eq. $Monolok^{(R)}$, $Concise^{(R)}$) were swelled most in sulfuric acid (assays 95%) and slightly in alcohol groups. 2. The solvent was exchanged every 24 hours during the brackets were recycled with sulfuric acid (assays 95%). As the passage of time, the adhesives were removed more clearly, and after 72 hours adhesives were nearly detached from bracket base. 3. Chemical recycled metal bracket surface showed no irregular structure by S.E.M. method.

한국인의 Bracket위치에 관한 연구 (A Study of Bracket Position in Korean)

  • This study was undertaken to determine the adequate bracket position in Korean. The subjects were consisted of casts and photographs of 30 males & 30 famales. They had acceptable profile, normal occlusion, no loss of teeth and no experience of dental treatment. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. In case of no necessity of the posterior teeth movement, bracket angulation was made automatically by paralleling the bracket slot with occlusal plane. 2. Axial inclination of all teeth were measured, and those of canine & premolar were much variable. 3. Adequate bracket position of Korean occlusion were obtained.

TiN 및 ZrN 코팅된 교정용 브라켓의 부식특성 (Corrosion Characteristics of TiN and ZrN Coated Orthodontic Brackets)

  • The dental orthodontic bracket requires good mechanical properties, such as elastic strength and frictional resistance, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of TiN and ZrN coating on corrosion resistance of orthodontic brackets using various electrochemical methods. Brackets manufactured by Ormco Co. were used, respectively, for experiment. Ion plating was carried out for coatings of bracket using Ti and Zr coating materials with nitrogen gas. Ion plated surface of each specimen was observed with field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), energy dispersive Xray spectroscopy(EDS) and electrochemical tester. The corrosion potential of the TiN and ZrN coated bracket was comparatively high. The current density of TiN and ZrN coated bracket was smaller than that of non-coated bracket in 0.9% NaCl solution. Pit nucleated at angle of bracket slot.

  • 본 연구에서는 범용 CAD 시스템을 사용하여 상세구조 설계단계에서의 자동화 가능성을 검토하였다. 파라메트릭 개념을 가진 macro의 기능이 유효함을 확인하였고, 이 개념을 이용하여 대표적인 구조부재인 transverse web frame, slot hole & collar plate 그리고 bracket의 설계에 적용하였다.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare frictional forces generated between orthodontic brackets and arch wires. Independent variables were chosen for study: arch wire size and shape, arch wire material, bracket width, and second-order angulation between bracket and arch wire. Kinetic frictional forces of stainless steel (0.014', 0.016', 0.018', 0.016' ${\times}$ 0.022', 0.018' ${\times}$ 0.022'), $\beta-titanium$ (0.016' ${\times}}$ 0.022') arch wires were measured on wide and junior edgewise twin brackets (0.018' ${\times}$ 0.022' slot). Instron was used to pull arch wires while $0^{\circ},\;3^{\circ},\;6^{\circ},\;or\;9^{\circ}$ angulation between and wire and bracket was given. The results were as follows: 1. The frictional force of $\beta-titanium$ wire was larger than that of stainless steel wire. 2. The frictional force was generally increased as the size of wire is increased. 3. The frictional force of rectangular wire was larger than that of round wire. 4. As second order angulation was increased, the frictional force was also increased. 5. The frictional force was larger on a wide bracket than on a junior bracket.

Comparison of Temperatures of the Resin Cement in Polycrystalline Ceramic Brackets Irradiated Using a Diode Laser

  • Purpose: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the change in the temperature of the adhesive resin in polycrystalline ceramic brackets irradiated using a diode laser at different irradiation energy levels and times. Materials and Methods: For the measurement of the temperature of the adhesive resin, it was applied at the base of the ceramic bracket, a thermocouple was placed at the center of the base surface, the bracket was placed on prepared resin specimens for light curing, and a laser was irradiated to the center of the bracket slot at 5, 7, and 10 W. For the measurement of the temperatures of the enamel under the bracket and pulp cavity, extracted premolar was fixed to a prepared mold and the ceramic bracket was bonded to the buccal surface of the premolar. The Kruskal-Wallis H test and Friedman test were used for statistical analysis. Result: At 5 W, the temperature of the adhesive resin did not reach the resin softening temperature of 200℃ within 30 seconds. At 7 W, it reached 200℃ when the ceramic bracket was irradiated continuously for 28 seconds. At 10 W, it reached 200℃ when the ceramic bracket was irradiated continuously for 15 seconds. During laser irradiation, the temperature of the enamel under the bracket increased by over 5℃ within 15 seconds. Conclusion: The use of diode laser irradiation for bracket debonding should be carefully considered because the pulp cavity temperature increases by over 5℃ within the irradiation time for resin thermal softening.

Influence of receiver bandwidth on MRI artifacts caused by orthodontic brackets composed of different alloys

  • Purpose: The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the role of bandwidth on the area of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) artifacts caused by orthodontic appliances composed of different alloys, using different pulse sequences in 1.5 T and 3.0 T magnetic fields. Materials and Methods: Different phantoms containing orthodontic brackets (ceramic, ceramic bracket with a stainless-steel slot, and stainless steel) were immersed in agar gel and imaged in 1.5 T and 3.0 T MRI scanners. Pairs of gradient-echo (GE), spin-echo (SE), and ultrashort echo time (UTE) pulse sequences were used differing in bandwidth only. The area of artifacts from orthodontic devices was automatically estimated from pixel value thresholds within a region of interest (ROI). Mean values for similar pulse sequences differing in bandwidth were compared at 1.5 T and 3.0 T using analysis of variance. Results: The comparison of groups revealed a significant inverse association between bandwidth values and artifact areas of the stainless-steel bracket and the self-ligating ceramic bracket with a stainless-steel slot(P<0.05). The areas of artifacts from the ceramic bracket were the smallest, but were not reduced significantly in pulse sequences with higher bandwidth values(P<0.05). Significant differences were also observed between 1.5 T and 3.0 T MRI using SE and UTE, but not using GE 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional pulse sequences. Conclusion: Higher receiver bandwidth might be indicated to prevent artifacts from orthodontic appliances in 1.5 T and 3.0 T MRI using SE and UTE pulse sequences.

  • The friction of orthodontic appliances is recogonized to be detrimental to tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to determine the magnitude of frictional force changes between bracket$(018'\times025'\;solt)$ and orthodontic wires(stainless steel, cobalt-chromium, and $\beta-titanium$, $017'\times0.25'$ rectangular) with time. The wire was secured in the bracket slot with a elastomeric ligature. Frictional forces were measured by universal testing machine. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. The frictional forces under dry condition were greater than those in saliva. 2. The frictional forces produced by cobalt-chromium wire were less than those generated by stainless steel and $\beta-titanium$ wire. 3. The frictional forces increased progressively with time, and the amount of increase on first two weeks was greater than on last two weeks. 4. The change of frictional force under dry condition was greater than in artificial saliva.
