In the case of the enlargement levee on the soft foundation, the existing levee and the enlargement levee connection can be damaged due to heterogeneous subsidence such as differential settlement at the joint of the box culvert passing through the levee. This study selected the downstream region of the Geum River and then confirmed the influence of the piping possibility on the levee by performing a 2D seepage analysis and analyzing the seepage tendency according to the position of the box culvert's gate. As a result, the flow velocity and the hydraulic gradient are larger in the upper breakage than the lower breakage, and the upper leak was more vulnerable to the piping than the lower leak. If leaks occur in the gate located on the riverside land, the risk of piping is increased when the water level rises and is maintained highly. In the case of the gate located on the inland, it could be predicted that the leakage could damage the stability of levee by increasing the water pressure inside the levee. As a result, if leakage occurs at any position in the box culvert, the pore water pressure is increased or decreased compared with the case when no leakage occurs. Therefore, if the pore water pressure is drastically reduced or increased compared with the normal case, leakage may occur. However, the result of this study is based on a 2D seepage analysis, and it is likely to be different from actual cases. Therefore, more detailed analysis by 3D analysis is recommended.

The purpose of this study is to predict the cracking behavior and suggest the method of controlling the cracking in concrete box culvert for power transmission due to differential drying shrinkage. Drying shrinkage cracking is mainly influenced by the moisture diffusion coefficient that determines moisture diffusion rate inside concrete structures. In addition to the diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient of concrete surface and relative humidity of ambient air simultaneously affect the moisture evaporation from concrete inside to external air outside. Within the framework of drying shrinkage cracking mechanism, it is necessary to perform the numerical analysis, which involves these three influencing factors to predict and control the shrinkage cracking of concrete. In this study, moisture diffusion and stress analysis cor responding to drying shrinkage on concrete box culvert are performed with consideration of diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient, and relative humidity of ambient air. From the numerical results, it is found that cracking behavior due to differential drying shrinkage of box culvert shows the different feature according to three influencing factors and the methodology of controlling of drying shrinkage cracks can be suggested from this study.

In this thesis, the study on controlling of cracks of concrete box culvert in early ages is presented. The optimum construction method and economical analysis were proposed also through the experiment of the material and field test. As a result of the experiment of the material, using fly ash, CSA expansive agent and BELITE cement(type IV) showed good result in the control of cracks induced by heat of hydration and shrinkage. As a result of construction test analysis, the maintenance time of form system did not show a big difference in controlling of cracks. Control of distribution of reinforcement, spacing of expansion joint and use of BELITE cement showed big differences in the control of cracks in early ages. As a result of economical analysis, control of construction variables before construction can make it possible to reduce the repair expense.

The construction of underground structures such as box culverts for electric power transmission is increasing more and more, and the life extension of these structures is very important. Carbonation-induced corrosion in concrete may often occur in a high carbon dioxide environment. In this study, the risk of carbonation of two concrete box culverts in an urban area was evaluated by measuring the carbonation rate and concrete cover depth. Then, the carbonation-free service life at the depth of the steel was calculated, based on in situ information, by the Monte Carlo simulation. The service life of box culvert due to carbonation was estimated over 250 years via Monte Carlo simulation.

To use concrete box culverts effectively, precast goods are manufactured at a factory, then linked and anchored with prestressing tendon at a field. However, the corrosion of rebar and prestressing tendon in the box culverts utilizing portland cement concrete is issued when the cracks occur at a underground water level. It has been reported that reported that expansive concrete, compared with portland cement concrete, has many structural advantages such as increasing capacity of watertight, controling initial crack and improving durability due to its property of expansion. During flexure test with RC beam made from expansive concrete, in the case of a constant section of concrete element, the lower steel ratio is, and in the case of a constant steel ratio, the more incremental the section of concrete element, the more incremental the amount of chemical prestress by expansive concrete is. At the segment of the box culverts using expansive concrete, the numbers of crack and its gap is reduced, and ultimate load and initial crack load is much larger than the segment at which expansive concrete is nor used. Also lay-out of tendon with a curvature generate upward force so that deflection is reduced. Through the whole procedure, it could be confirmed that performance precast box culvert by means of using expansive concrete is improved.
Studying the critical response characteristics of box culverts with diverse geometrical configurations under seismic excitations is a necessary step to develop a reasonable design method. In this work, a numerical parametric study is conducted on various soil-culvert systems, aiming to highlight the critical difference in the seismic performances between three- and four-sided culverts. Two-dimensional numerical models consider a variety of burial depths, flexibility ratios and foundation widths, assuming a visco-elastic soil condition, which permits to compare with the analytical solutions and previous studies. The results show that flexible three-sided culverts at a shallow depth considerably amplify the spectral acceleration and Arias intensity. Larger racking deformation and rocking rotation are also predicted for the three-sided culverts, but the bottom slab influence decreases with increasing burial depth and foundation width. The bottom slab combined with the burial depth and structural stiffness also significantly influences the magnitude and distribution of the dynamic earth pressure. The findings of this work shed light on the critical role of the bottom slab in the seismic responses of box culverts and may have a certain reference value for the preliminary seismic design using R-F relation.

There are numerous factors in designing the civil-structure even for simple ones. So the designer has to be decide for such conditions and this makes him difficult. Recently, some design programs are used for the design of civil-structure. But even for using the existing design programs, another program is necessary, such as a finite element analysis program. Moreover a few errors may be made in the drafts which must be coincided with the structural calculations. In this study, the design programs for rahmen bridge with single span and box culvert were developed to reduce the design efforts and the manmade errors. These two design programs perform structural analysis, calculations, and making report and draft at a time. In addition, These programs suggest manuals according to standard specifications and references for design. When these programs are used for design, it will be able to reduce the efforts and time of civil engineers.

Hydraulic computations to determine the elevation of canal bottom and mater surface for box type concrete culverts are discussed. Velocity and cross sectional area of flow are computed from Manning's formula. Aad then head loss and velocity head are considered to determine the elevation of bottom and water surface. For stress analysis, 13.5 ton live load and earth pressure are considered. Also longitudinal stress of box culverts is checked.
The purpose of culvert design is to determine optimum size for a safe drainage of flood discharge. The present method of culvert design in Korea is generally carried out by using "Road Drainage Design" of Korea Expressway Corporation (1991), which is based on the manual of Federal Highway Association (FHWA) of USA. However, this method may result in subjective error because of using graphs and the usage of nomograph can be a major obstacle for computer modelling. Some errors found in the previous works of culvert design are corrected, and a new logic has been developed for a simple determination of culvert size in this study. FHWA (1985) presents a nomograph to determine the critical water depth and the velocity head for a circular pipe, but in this study simple explicit equations have been developed to determine both respectively.
