  • Heavy-weight head slides may cause excessive inertia impact & moment on the machine tool structure when they move or stop abruptly during operation. Consequently these inertia impact and unbalanced moment bring transient vibrations and rough sliding motions on the machine structure. Machine tool engineers have tried many kind of feed-slide designs in order to solve this problem; for example, the design optimization of the moving structure for minimum weight and maximum stiffness, box-in-box type slide design, and so on. In this article, force and moment equilibrium equations regarding to the inertia force & moment were derived for each one of a mold M/C's head slides. Furthermore, five different design configurations of head slide assembly were reviewed for its design improvement regarding to force & moment calculations and finite element structural analysis results.

  • In process of reinforced concrete (RC) box structure. the heat of hydration may cause serious thermal cracking. In order to eliminate hydration heat of mass concrete. this paper reports results of hydration heat control in mass concrete structure using the pulsating heat pipe. There were three RC box molds($1.2{\times}l.8{\times}2.4m^3$) which shows a difference as compared with each other. One was not equipped with pulsating heat pipe. The others were equipped with pulsating heat pipe. All of them were cooled with natural air convection. The pulsating heat pipe was composed of serpentine type copper pipe with 10 turns (outer diameter: 4mm. inner diameter: 2.8mm). The working fluid was R-22 and its charging ratio was 40% by volume. The conditions such as the number of turns. the length and the pitch of the pulsating heat pipe and the size of concrete structure were changed. Based on these experiments, it was confirmed that this construction method using pulsating heat pipe was effective to remove hydration heat of mass concrete structure and thus it was possible to prevent harmful thermal crack and construction Period and costs of concrete structure would be cut down.

  • Clinical application of composite resin recently draw great concerns in dentistry. Especially due to advantages such as esthetics, adhesiveness, simple clinical procedures, various shapes and kinds of composite resins are widely being applied to prosthodontics, conservative dentistry, and orthodontics. But, clinical problems attributable to the polymerization shrinkage of composite resin have been proposed, and we have to regard clinical problems such as secondary caries, loss of restoration, fracture of the surrounding tooth structure, marginal discoloration, and tooth sensitivity, and many portions are remained to be overcome. Therefore, this study attempts to analyze stress distribution between resin and tooth structure which is generated during polymerization shrinkage of composite resin using three dimensional finite element method. Three dimensional finite element models with conventional box-shape cavity and erosion/abrasion type V-shape lesion cavity in upper central incisor were developed. These cavities were filled with four different types of placement techniques. (bulk filling, horizontal increment filling, oblique occlusal increment filling, oblique gingival increment filling) The stresses generated by polymerization shrinkage of composite resin were calculated. The results analyzed with three dimensional finite element method were as follows : 1. The increment filling technique showed the highest maximum normal stress in both conventional box-shape and V-shape cavities and showed a tendency to decrease after complete polymerization. 2. The bulk filling technique resulted in increased stresses during the curing process in both conventional box-shape and V-shape cavities and the highest maximum normal stress occurred after complete polymerization. 3. The bulk filling resulted in the lowest maximum normal stress in both box-shape and V-shape cavities 4. Regardless of placement method, in conventional box-shape cavity, the maximum normal stress increased in dentin floor, enamel, dentin sequence and in V-shape cavity, the maximum normal stress increased in enamel, dentin sequence.

  • The mechanical behavior of the underground box culvert constructed by the open cut method depends mainly on the earth pressure acting on it. In this study, the earth pressure on the underground box culverts constructed by the open cut method during and after the construction sequence was numerically analysed by using FLAC. The results are compared with those of the Marston-Spangler's theory, silo theory, and the model tests. The results showed that the vertical earth pressure on the upper slab of the box structure was not uniform. It was as large as the overburden in the middle part of the slab but was smaller or larger than that at its end part depending on the slope of the excavation, the depth of the cover, and the width of the side refill. The horizontal earth pressure on the side wail was much smaller than the earth pressure at rest and grew nonlinearly with the depth.

  • Vitis vinifera thaumatin-like protein (VVTL1) is a fruit-specific and ripening-related protein in grape. In order to isolate VVTL1-homolog gene and fruit-specific promoter from Campbell cultivar, we isolated a genomic clone containing VVTL1-homolog gene from grape genomic library through plaque hybridization. VVTL1-homolog gene has an intronless genomic structure, which the pattern is matched with those of other PR5 genes such as osmotin and osmotin-like protein genes. Transcription start site was determined by primer extension analysis. The promoter region of VVTL1-homolog gene contains a sequence or structure, especially the location and number of TCA box and ABRE (abscisic acid-responsive element), distinct from other reported plant PR5 genes, though with several known functional elements such as a TATA box and CAAT box. These results suggested that VVTL1-homolog gene may be regulated by a plant hormone, abscisic acid, and one or several stresses such osmotic pressure and pathogen infection. The isolation of fruit-specific promoter may be helpful to breed a genetically modified grape with valuable phenotype or materials in fruits.

  • For the hydrogen liquefaction, the large amount of energy is consumed, due to precooling, liquefaction and o-p conversion processes. The aim of this work is to improve the performance of hydrogen liquefaction process by introducing the new energy saving processes, that are the liquid nitrogen precooling process by using LNG cold energy, and the new design of cold box insulation using cold air circulation. The results show that the indirect use of LNG cold energy in precooling process enables not only to get energy saving, but to make safer operation of liquefaction plant. In new cold box, the energy loss of equipments could be reduced by nearly 35%~50% compared to the present perlite insulation, if insulation structure is organised as 3mm steel wall/20cm PUF/5cm air/20cm PUF/equipment. Additionally the equipments installed in cold box can get cooling effect, if the temperature is higher than the temperature of cold air. The application of this results can gives to increase the liquid yield of about 50% substantially in industrial hydrogen liquefaction plant.

  • An experimental study was made of a large-scale vortical structure over a backward-facing step. The Reynolds number based on the step height was R $e_{H}$ =33,000. To recognize the large-scale vortex, three components of velocity were measured. The measurements were performed in the recirculation zone (x/H=4.0) and the reattachment zone(x/H=7.5). To measure the wall pressure fluctuations in a turbulent flow over a backward-facing step, a 32-channel microphone array was installed beneath the wall in the streamwise and spanwise directions. From the measured pressure field, the size of large-scale vortex was obtained. As a detailed study, a conditionally-averaging technique was employed to characterize the coherent structure of the large-scale vortex. To see the relationship between the flow field and the relevant spatial mode of the pressure field, the spatial box filtering (SBF) was examined. A cross-correlation between velocity and pressure fluctuations was performed to identify the structure and the length scale of the large-scale vortex.x.

  • In this inquisition, a passive damper namely Stockbridge Damper (SBD) has been introduced to the field of vibration control of Offshore Wind Turbine (OWT) to reduce the earthquake excitations. The dynamic responses of the structure have been analyzed for three recorded earthquakes and the responses have been assessed. To find an optimum SBD, the parameters of damper have been optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on Box-Behnken Design (BBD) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The influence of the design variables of SBD such as the diameter of messenger cable, the length of messenger cable and logarithmic decrement of the damping has been investigated through response variables such as maximum displacement, RMS displacement and frequency amplitude of structure under an artificially generated white noise. After that, the structure with optimized and non-optimized damper has been analyzed with under the same earthquakes. Moreover, the comparative results show that the structure with optimized damper is 11.78%, 18.71%, 11.6% and 7.77%, 7.01%, 10.23% more effective than the structure with non-optimized damper with respect to the displacement and frequency response under the earthquakes. The results show that the SBD can obviously affect the characteristics of the vibration of the OWT and RSM based on BBD and PSO approach can provide an optimum damper.

  • In a wide range of ML applications, the training data contains privacy-sensitive information that should be kept secure. Training the ML systems by privacy-sensitive data makes the ML model inherent to the data. As the structure of the model has been fine-tuned by training data, the model can be abused for accessing the data by the estimation in a reverse process called model inversion attack (MIA). Although, MIA has been applied to shallow neural network models of recognizers in literature and its threat in privacy violation has been approved, in the case of a deep learning (DL) model, its efficiency was under question. It was due to the complexity of a DL model structure, big number of DL model parameters, the huge size of training data, big number of registered users to a DL model and thereof big number of class labels. This research work first analyses the possibility of MIA on a deep learning model of a recognition system, namely a face recognizer. Second, despite the conventional MIA under the white box scenario of having partial access to the users' non-sensitive information in addition to the model structure, the MIA is implemented on a deep face recognition system by just having the model structure and parameters but not any user information. In this aspect, it is under a semi-white box scenario or in other words a gray-box scenario. The experimental results in targeting five registered users of a CNN-based face recognition system approve the possibility of regeneration of users' face images even for a deep model by MIA under a gray box scenario. Although, for some images the evaluation recognition score is low and the generated images are not easily recognizable, but for some other images the score is high and facial features of the targeted identities are observable. The objective and subjective evaluations demonstrate that privacy cyber-attack by MIA on a deep recognition system not only is feasible but also is a serious threat with increasing alert state in the future as there is considerable potential for integration more advanced ML techniques to MIA.
