In this research, the relationship between the bow shape and green water phenomenon on the bow deck of an FPSO was studied using an experimental method. A 140,000 DWT FPSO was used as the objective hull form in the present research. The incident waves were regular types. The heights were 1.0 and 1.5 times the freeboard, and the length was equal in size to LBP. The wave heights and pressures on the deck were measured in experiments. Model tests were performed to determine the effects of bow flare angles, bow shapes, and a forecastle deck. The free heave and pitch conditions were applied to the models in these experiments. From the results of the model tests, an optimized bow shape was designed, which was found to decrease the green water impact loading. The results of this research could be used as fundamental data in the design of a bow shape.

This paper employs computational tools to investigate the cause of resistance reductions in calm water and waves of the sharp bow form compared to the blunt bow in 66,000 DWT bulk carriers. A more slender shape at the fore-shoulder without a bulbous bow is a prominent feature of the sharp bow. The blunt bow incorporates a bulbous shape. A two-phase unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved; and a realizable k-ε model has been applied for the turbulent closure. The free-surface is obtained by solving a VOF equation. The computational results have been validated with model tests carried out at a towing tank. The pressure component of resistance in the sharp bow is reduced by 8.9% in calm water, and 6.4-12.7% in regular head waves. The frictional components of resistance in the sharp and blunt bows are largely the same.

The rescue methods for the marine casualties are limited due to the characteristics of operation environment of the vessel. Especially the most of marine accidents have been occurred at the bow structure of ship. Moreover the failure of bow structure may lead to catastrophic mishaps. In this paper, the extents of damage of a bow structure fracture subject to collision accident was investigated by using numerical method. The computer simulation approach by using Finite Element Method was employed to accomplish this goal. A finite element model, a 3D model of ship, has been utilized to evaluate damage of bow structure according to collision scenario. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that the plastic deformation occurred at the bow structure. Also it was shown that the collision angle clearly plays a role in determining amount of damage of ship structures.

It is very important to investigate and understand the motion of a FPSO on waves because green water phenomenon occurs owing to the relative motions between incident waves and a ship on them. In this research, both experimental and some numerical approaches have been performed in head sea conditions with regular waves. As an object model of this research, a FPSO model is set free to heave and pitch during the experiments. Also, the motions of the FPSO model which are the results of the experiments are used for the corresponding numerical computations. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of bow flare on green water load. In this research, it is found that the amount of green water entered from the side of bow is decreased by the increase of bow flare angle. Moreover, the relation between the green water on the bow upper deck and the impact load on the vertical wall located at turrethead is investigated. The results of this research could be used as one of the fundamental data to design bow flares. Also, an optimized bow flare angle is proposed in this study.
When the vessel is running at the very low Froude numbers, the free-surface is difficult to be disturbed, wave-making is negligible, and the double -model velocity potential gives a very good approximation for calculating the velocity distribution just outside the boundary layer. If the speed of incident flow is gradually increased, the most perceptible change is the rise of the flow surface at stem. With further increase in speed, the nature of the flow at the bow changes completely, The flow ahead of the bow becomes more distrubed, the rise at the stem to stagnation height disappear, and the first wave crest, of less than the stagnation height, appears a small distance downstream from the stem. The present study is concerned with a small region of this flow, mainly in the bow region. The present investigation is primarily an experimental study of the flow in the bow region of s ship model, and it is undertaken in order to investigated systematically, the effect of bow geometry on this flow. The long-range objective is to use these results to guide the development of a mathematical model for predicting the flow about a ship's bow.

Fuel assembly (FA) bow in pressurized water reactor (PWR) cores is considered to be a complex process with a large number of influencing mechanisms and several unknowns. Uncertainty and sensitivity analyses are a common way to assess the predictability of such complex phenomena. To perform such analyses, a structural model of a row of 15 FAs in the reactor core is implemented with the finite-element code ANSYS Mechanical APDL. The distribution of lateral hydraulic forces within the core row is estimated based on a two-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics model with porous media, assuming symmetric or asymmetric core inlet and outlet flow profiles. The influence of the creep rate on the bow amplitude is tested based on different creep models for guide tubes and fuel rods. Different FA initial states are considered: fresh FAs or FAs with higher burnup, which may be initially straight or exhibit an initial bow from previous cycles. The simulation results over one reactor cycle demonstrate that changes in the creep rate and the hydraulic conditions may have a considerable impact on the bow amplitudes and the bow patterns. A good knowledge of the specific creep behavior and the hydraulic conditions is therefore crucial for making reliable predictions.
In this paper, the optimized design for bow structure was investigated by using EDISON software. Considering the mechanism of the bow, non-linear FEM analysis was essential. The factors of the design are height, width, number of holes and taper value. High performance of the internal energy and lowest mass were main issues. The limit of the von-mises stress was yield strength for the material. Material was chosen by considering typical bow material, Aluminum. Using Taguchi method($L_9$), 9 models were selected and contribution rate was calculated for each factors. Following the contribution rate, 3 factors were fixed and optimized model was predicted. After making optimized model for FEM analysis, the value of internal-energy, mass for FEM model were compared with predicted value, calculated the percentage error and figure out the reliability of Taguchi method.
Nowadays, large container ships are continually developed and that's why the bow and stern structural stability problems by slamming become a significant more and more. However, due to the complexity of slamming, it is difficult to consider those problems at the design stage. For this reason, we attempt numerical analysis through SNUFOAM by generating the bow and stern two-dimensional cross-sectional grid in WILS JIP experiment at KRISO. Unlike the conventional method for the computation time saving, by setting the inlet flow conditions referred to the model test, we analyzed the slamming without applying the grid deformation method. As a result, when the stern model, as in the previous studies, it was possible to obtain quantitatively the fluid impulse is close to the experimental results. When the bow model, we can found the change by the position of force sensors which are derived for the bulbous bow and obtained fluid impulse and flow shape at slamming similar to the model test.

In this study, we analyzed the resistance performance and running attitude of a catamaran by numerical analysis with a conventional bow, which is generally applied, and a reverse, protruding bow. The shape of the reverse bow was compared through numerical analysis and model tests. The reverse bow shape showed an improved wave pattern by shifting the generation position of the forward divergent wave to the aft in comparison with a conventional bow shape. This effect was found to be effective in determining resistance and stable running attitude. The hull resistance improved by about 2.95 %. The comparative numerical analysis and model test for the reverse bow shape completed in this study should be useful for future hull design application.

The resistance decreasing effects of a bulbous bow have been investigated with the model test results of the Korean standard type 10,000GT cargo vessel equipped with several different sized bulbous bows. The best bulbous bow for the design is 3.66% bulb which decrease the residual resitance 5%. The new hull combined with a bulbous bow have to be designed in other to get more effects.
