  • Ultrafine NiO/YSZ (Yttria-Stabilized Zirconic) composite powders were prepared by using a glycine nitrate process (GNP) for anode material of solid oxide fuel cells. The specific surface areas of synthesized NiO/YSZ composite powders were examined with controlling pH of a precursor solution and the content of glycine. The binding of glycine with metal ions occurring in the precursor solution was analyzed by using FTIR. The characteristics of synthesized composite powders were examined with X-ray diffractometer, a BET method with $N_2$ absorption, scanning and transmission electron microscopies. Strongly acid precursor solution increased the specific surface area of the synthesized composite powders. This is suggested to be caused by the increased binding of metal ions and glycine under a strong acid solution of pH=0.5 that lets glycine consist of mainly the amine group of NH$_3$$^{+}$ After sintering and reducing treatment of NiO/YSZ composite powders synthesized by GNP, the Ni/YSZ pellet showed ideal microstructure very fine Ni Particles of 3-5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were distributed uniformly and fine pores around Ni metal particles were formed, thus, leading to an increase of the triple phase boundary among gas, Ni and YSZ.Z.

  • We fabricated Ni and Ni-W alloys for use as a substrate in YBCO coated conductor applications and evaluated the effect of W in Ni on texture, microstructure and surface morphology, and hardness of substrate. Pure Ni, Ni-2 at.%W, and Ni-5at.%W alloy substrates were prepared by plasma arc melting, cold rolling, and the recrystallization heat treatment at various temperature (700- 130$0^{\circ}C$). It was observed that Ni-W alloy substrates had stronger cube texture and maintained it at higher annealing temperature, compared to pure Ni substrate : The full-width at half- maximums of in-plane texture was 13.40$^{\circ}$ for Ni substrate and 4.42$^{\circ}$-5.57$^{\circ}$ for Ni-W substrate annealed at 100$0^{\circ}C$. In addition, it was observed that the Ni-W substrate had smaller grain size, shallower boundary depth, and higher hardness, compared to those of pure Ni substrate.

Study on the HDDR Characteristics of the Nd-Fe(-Co)-B(-Ga-Zr)-type Alloys

  • The HDDR characteristics of the Nd-Fe-B-type isotropic and anisotropic HDDR alloys were investigated using three types of alloys: alloy A $(Nd_{12.6}Fe_{81.4}B_6), alloy B (Nd_{12.6}Fe_{81.3}B_6Zr_{0.1}), and alloy C (Nd_{12.6}Fe_{68.8}Co_{11.5}B_6Ga_{1.0}Zr_{0.1}$). The alloy A is featured with the isotropic HDDR character, while alloy B and C are featured with the anisotropic HDDR character. Hydrogenation and disproportionation characteristics of the alloys were examined using DTA under hydrogen gas. Recombination characteristics of the alloys were examined by observing the coercivity variation as a function of recombination time. The present study revealed that the alloy C exhibits slightly higher hydrogenation and disproportionation temperatures compared to the alloy A and B. Recombination of the anisotropic alloy B and C takes place more rapidly with respect to the isotropic alloy A. The intrinsic coercivities of the recombined materials rapidly increased with increasing the recombination time and then showed a peak, after which the coercivities decreased gradually. The degraded coercivity was, however, recovered significantly on prolonged recombination treatment. Compared with the isotropic HDDR alloy A the anisotropic HDDR alloy B and C are notable for their greater recovery of coercivity. The significant recovery of coercivity was accounted for the in terms of the development of well-defined smooth grain boundary between the recombined grains on prolonged recombination.

  • Silicon addition in titanium alloys generally results in solid solution hardening by silicon itself and precipitation hardening by titanium silicides. The morphology and distribution of the titanium silicides depend upon the alloy chemistry or the heat treatment condition, and play an important role in improving the mechanical properties of the alloys. In this study, the morphology and crystallographic characteristics of the titanium silicides in the Ti-Fe-Si alloy system were studied. Three types of silicides were found in the alloys; (1) interconnected chain-like silicides at grain boundary, (2) coarse silicides over im, (3) fine silicides smaller than 0.2m. Ti3Si was dominant in cast + HIP condition while Ti5Si3 was dominant in as-cast state. It is recognized that $Ti_5Si_3$$\rightarrow$$Ti_3Si$ transition occurred by the peritectoid reaction and it may be promoted by the pressure during HIP. However, in the case of the fine silicides, $Ti_3Si$ and $Ti_5Si_3$ were found simultaneously even after HIP. Such a fine silicide was found to have a crystallographic orientation relationship with matrix.

ULSI용 Electroplating Cu 박막의 미세조직 연구 (Microstructural investigation of the electroplating Cu thin films for ULSI application)

  • electroplating(EP)법을 이용하여 ULSI용 Cu 박막을 제조하였다. seed Cu는 sputtering으로 증착하였으며, 확산방지막으로 TaN를 사용하였다. 제작된 EP Cu 박막은 seed Cu의 영향으로 열처리 조건에 관계없이 Cu(111)방향으로 강하게 우선 배향 하였다. 열처리 온도와 시간이 증가함에 따라 Cu박막의 미세조직이 non-columnar structure에서 약 2배 이상 결정립 성장하여 columnar structure로 바뀌었으며, 또한 as-deposit시 관찰되었던 stacking fault, twin, dislocation들이 상당히 줄어드는 것이 관찰되었다. Cu의 확산에 의하여 생기는 copper-silicide는 관찰할 수 없었으며, 이것은 두께 45nm의 TaN막이 $450^{\circ}C$, 30분 열처리시 확산방지막으로 충분한 역할을 한 것으로 판단된다. Cu(111)우선 배향과 열처리에 의한 결정립 성장 및 defect감소는 Cu 박막의 결정립계에서 발생하는 electromigration 현상을 상당히 줄일 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Growth of graphene:Fundamentals and its application

  • Ever since the experimental discovery of graphene exfoiliated from the graphite flakes by Geim et at., this area has drawn a lot of attention for its possible application in IT industry. For the growth of graphene, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been widely used to fabricate the large area graphene. The lateral size of this graphene can be easily controlled by the size of the metal substrate though the chemical etching to remove this substrate is somewhat troublesome. Another problem which is hard to avoid is the folding at the grain boundary. We will discuss the origin of the folding first and introduce the way to avoid this folding. To solve this problem, we have used the various types of micro-thin metal foils. The precise control of hydro-carbon and the carrier gas results in the formation of the graphene on top of substrate. The thickness of graphene layers can be controlled with the control of gas flow on top of Cu substrate in contrast to the previously reported self-limiting growth $behavior^1$. Uniformity of this graphene layer has been checked by micro-raman spectroscopy and SEM. The size of grain can be enhanced by thermal treatment or use of other metal substrate. The dependence of grain size on the lattice size of the substrate will be discussed. By selecting the shape of substrate, we can grow various types of graphene. We will introduce the micron size graphene tube and its application.

Extraction of ObjectProperty-UsageMethod Relation from Web Documents

  • This paper aims to extract an ObjectProperty-UsageMethod relation, in particular the HerbalMedicinalProperty-UsageMethod relation of the herb-plant object, as a semantic relation between two related sets, a herbal-medicinal-property concept set and a usage-method concept set from several web documents. This HerbalMedicinalProperty-UsageMethod relation benefits people by providing an alternative treatment/solution knowledge to health problems. The research includes three main problems: how to determine EDU (where EDU is an elementary discourse unit or a simple sentence/clause) with a medicinal-property/usage-method concept; how to determine the usage-method boundary; and how to determine the HerbalMedicinalProperty-UsageMethod relation between the two related sets. We propose using N-Word-Co on the verb phrase with the medicinal-property/usage-method concept to solve the first and second problems where the N-Word-Co size is determined by the learning of maximum entropy, support vector machine, and naïve Bayes. We also apply naïve Bayes to solve the third problem of determining the HerbalMedicinalProperty-UsageMethod relation with N-Word-Co elements as features. The research results can provide high precision in the HerbalMedicinalProperty-UsageMethod relation extraction.

강소성 가공된 Ni-30Cr 합금의 결정립 미세화와 기계적 물성 향상 (Grain Refinement and Mechanical Properties Improvement in a Severely Plastic Deformed Ni-30Cr Alloy)

  • The present study evaluated the microstructures and mechanical properties of severely deformed Ni-30Cr alloys. Cross-roll rolling (CRR) process was introduced as a severe plastic deformation (SPD), and Ni-30Cr alloy sheets were cold rolled to 90% thickness reduction and subsequently annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 min to obtain the recrystallized microstructure. Electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) was introduced to analyze grain boundary character distributions (GBCDs). The application of CRR to the Ni-30Cr alloy was effective in enhancing the grain refinement through heat treatment; consequently, the average grain size was significantly refined from $33{\mu}m$ in the initial material to $0.6{\mu}m$. This grain refinement directly improved the mechanical properties, in which yield and tensile strengths significantly increased relative to those of the initial material. We systematically discuss the grain refinement and accompanying improvement of the mechanical properties, in terms of the effective strain imposed by CRR relative to conventional rolling (CR).

ISDS 포럼쇼핑 방지를 위한 투자협정상 MFN 배제조항 (MFN Restrictions in Investment Agreements for the Prevention of ISDS Forum Shopping)

  • MFN provisions in investment agreements have been a tool for equitable treatment between foreign investors with different nationalities. This non discriminatory principle has been pursued by the host states for further investment promotion. However, it may be abused to bring the situation of so called "ISDS forum shopping" which might harm the stability and predictability of investment agreements by unexpectedly extending the scope of obligations. While some investment arbitral tribunals have interpreted the scope of MFN provision very broadly to allow the ISDS forum shopping, both procedural and substantive provisions have been invoked. To prevent any chaos of unclear boundary of MFN provision, some explicit MFN restrictions which would limit the scope of MFN provision are needed. Indeed, some investment agreements have included these MFN restrictions. Specifically, MFN restrictions deal with both procedural or substantive provisions to prevent ISDS forum shopping. According to the lessons from the recent examples of MFN restrictions, there must be a careful consideration on the benefits and costs of having a certain type of MFN restriction as the parties can be the host state and the home state of their investors at the same time.

Improvement and verification of the DeCART code for HTGR core physics analysis

  • This paper presents the recent improvements in the DeCART code for HTGR analysis. A new 190-group DeCART cross-section library based on ENDF/B-VII.0 was generated using the KAERI library processing system for HTGR. Two methods for the eigen-mode adjoint flux calculation were implemented. An azimuthal angle discretization method based on the Gaussian quadrature was implemented to reduce the error from the azimuthal angle discretization. A two-level parallelization using MPI and OpenMP was adopted for massive parallel computations. A quadratic depletion solver was implemented to reduce the error involved in the Gd depletion. A module to generate equivalent group constants was implemented for the nodal codes. The capabilities of the DeCART code were improved for geometry handling including an approximate treatment of a cylindrical outer boundary, an explicit border model, the R-G-B checker-board model, and a super-cell model for a hexagonal geometry. The newly improved and implemented functionalities were verified against various numerical benchmarks such as OECD/MHTGR-350 benchmark phase III problems, two-dimensional high temperature gas cooled reactor benchmark problems derived from the MHTGR-350 reference design, and numerical benchmark problems based on the compact nuclear power source experiment by comparing the DeCART solutions with the Monte-Carlo reference solutions obtained using the McCARD code.
