The effect of characteristic of surface roughness and roughness patterns on friction was studied experimentally in boundary lubrication with reciprocating tribometer. Roughness was changed from Ra=0.2($\mu\textrm{m}$)to Ra=1.2($\mu\textrm{m}$). Three roughness pattern-transverse, oblique, longitudinal- were tested for various load and velocity. The experimental results show that the scuffing resistance of surfaces with transversal roughness pattern is higher than that of surface with longitudinal and obliq pattern. under the conditions of the roughness values of Ra=0.2, 0.5,1.0 and 1.2. surfacer roughness (Ra) was decreased with the normal load increased before scuffing occurred. oblique pattern and longitudinal pattern with Ra=0.2 and Ra=1.0 was higher scuffing load under low sliding velocity, but with Ra=0.5 was higher scuffing load under high sliding velocity.
The surface temperature at the interface of bodies in a sliding contact is one of the most important factors influencing the behavior of machine components. The calculation of the surface temperature at a sliding contact interface has been an interesting and important subject for tribologist. Temperature analyses were usually performed under the consideration contacted two bodies as semi-infinite. But the analysis was difficulty in being applied to finite body and considering the boundary condition. In this study, contact temperature rise of two finite bodies and surfaces due to frictional heating under the rectangular and the circular sliding contact is calculated. Heat partition factor is calculated using semi-infinite solid analysis and the temperature of the finite bodies is calculated using FVM. It will be shown that Most frictional heat in the fore part of contact region for sliding direction is conducted into body that has a moving heat source and the site of the maximum temperature rise moves to the opposite direction of sliding during sliding.
The static and dynamic performances of a floating ring journal bearing with central circumferential grooves at the inner and outer films are obtained numerically with isothermal lubrication theory. Elrod algorithm implementing Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson cavitation boundary condition is adopted to predict cavitation regions in the inner and outer films more accurately than conventional analyses using half Sommerfeld or Reynolds conditions. The pressure drop in the circumferential groove of the inner film due to the rotation of the journal and ring is taken into account. It is shown that the lubricant supply pressure has significant influence on the load capacity and dynamic coefficients of the bearing. When the supply pressure is low and the journal speed is high, the pressure drop results in severe starvation of lubricant in the inner film and varies the overall performance of the bearing remarkably.
In this paper, the influence of ram-pressure on the static and dynamic characteristics of infinite width tilting-pad journal bearing is investigated theoretically. The ram-pressure is obtained by assumption of conservation of mechanical energy of the lubricant flow through the leading edge of the pad. The pressure in the lubricating film is numerically calculated using the ram-pressure obtained as the inlet pressure boundary condition of the pad. The static equilibrium state of tilting-pad journal bearing is determined by Newton-Raphson iteration method. A numerical results are presented in graphic form and relationships between the ram-pressure and the static and dynamic characteristics are discussed.
Morphological analysis of wear particles in the lubricating oil is a very effective and versatile means of lubricant analysis for machine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. The prospects for determining quantitative information about wear particle morphology have been considerably enhanced by recent developments reported in the application of image processing and analysis techniques. This study was undertaken to investigate the influence of oiliness agent and extreme pressure agent on the shape of wear particles. The wear test was performed under different experimental conditions with stearic acid, dibenzyl disulfide(DBDS) and tricresol phosphate(TCP) in paraffinic base oil. Wear particles characteristics were described using four shape parameters, namely 50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity. The results showed that the four shape parameters of wear particles depend on a kind of the additives. This analysis of wear debris with computer image processing techniques is sufficient to distinguish some types of wear debris. The wear volume of three kinds of the specimens are affected by the additives with boundary films.
This paper considers analysis of the lubrication between the piston ring and the cylinder liner. Piston ring lubrication analysis considering oil transport is important because oil consumption is an essential factor to design the piston assembly. To develop the lubrication analysis program for the piston ring, oil continuity condition and open-end boundary assumption are used for computational boundaries. Results show that oil continuity can be almost satisfied at any crank angle in and out of the piston ring clearance. Therefore the amount of oil consumption and the dynamic behavior of ring pack can be estimated using this algorithm. And it can be known that the effective width may be smaller than the full width of the piston ring, so oil starvation condition should be considered for the lubrication analysis of the piston ring.
The prediction of fretting wear is a significant issue for the design of contacting mechanical components such as flexible couplings and splines, jointed structures and so on. In our earlier study, we developed a numerical model to predict the fretting wear using boundary element method. The developed algorithm needs experimental fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients between two moving materials to get more reliable results. In this study, therefore, we demonstrated the measurement method of the fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients using disk on plate tribometer with piazo actuator and gap sensor. For four different material combinations, the fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients are acquired through the fretting wear experiment and the analysis of the measured values. Thess results are useful to predict the quantative fretting wear rate in the developed algorithm.
The present study was undertaken to investigate the dry wear characteristics of die steel STD 11 for cold molding. The wear test was experimentally carried out under different conditions using a wear device, which was made in laboratory, and in which annular surfaces of wear testing specimens wear rubbed in dry sliding condition with varying the sliding speed, contact pressure, and sliding distance. The wear loss by variation of sliding speed was much in 0.3 m/sec and less in higher speed range above its sliding speed according to formation of the boundary lubrication film. The critical sliding speed with maximum value of the specific wear rate switched over to lower speed side according. as contact pressure increased. The critical sliding distance was increased with decrease in oxidation reaction velocity. The depth below subsurface showing maximum hardness (Hv) came out at the position, $60 \mu m$, of the maximum shear stress due to strain hardening.
The antiwear properties of amphiphilic monolayers and composite multilayer on silicon surface were investigated using microtribometer and Auger Electron Spectroscopy. LangmuirBlodgett (LB) monolayers from behenic acid, 2,4heneicosanedione(HD) and its lopper complex((HD)$_2$Cu) were fabricated on silicon surface and the composite multilayer of 5bilayer of (HD)$_2$Cu was fabricated on the surface of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) selfassembled monolayer (SAM). We observed that LB monolayers and the composite multilayer exhibited a steady and excellent friction response when compared with the OTS SAM. These LB mono and multilayer also showed much higher wearresistance than the OTS SAM.
It is known that the effects of oil supply conditions on the characteristics of plain journal bearings are significant and especially the dynamic characteristics are affected by cavity region. For various shapes (axial groove, spiral groove, X-shape groove) and positions of oil grooves, the pressure distribution and the static performance of plain journal bearings are obtained with numerical methods. Elrods algorithm which implements JFO oil rupture/reformation boundary condition is used in order to take into account the effect of cavity region. It is shown that in the cases of axial groove or X-shape groove the load capacity and the attitude angle are affected by the groove position but the effect of spiral groove position is less significant.
