  • This paper is about the code that realizes the $e^N$-Method for boundary-layer transition prediction. The $e^N$-Method based on the linear stability theory is applied to predicting boundary-layer transition frequently. This paper deals with the construction of code, stability analysis and the calculation of N-factor. The results of transition prediction using the $e^N$-Method for flat plate/cone compressible boundary-layers are presented.

  • A modified k-$\epsilon$ model is proposed for calculation of transitional boundary layer flows. In order to develop the eddy viscosity model for the problem, the flow is divided into three regions; namely, pre-transition region, transition region and fully turbulent region. The pre-transition eddy-viscosity is formulated by extending the mixing Length concept. In the transition region, the eddy-viscosity model employs two length scales, i.e., pre-transition length scale and turbulent length scale pertaining to the regions upstream and the downstream, respectively, and a university model of stream-wise intermittency variation is used as a function bridging the pre-transition region and the fully turbulent region. The proposed model is applied to calculate three benchmark cases of the transitional boundary layer flows with different free-stream turbulent intensity ( $1\%{\~}6\%$ ) under zero-pressure gradient. It was found that the profiles of mom velocity and turbulent intensity, local maximum of velocity fluctuations, their locations as well as the stream-wise variation of integral properties such as skin friction, shape factor and maximum velocity fluctuations are very satisfactorily Predicted throughout the flow regions.

Mach 6 Tests of Scramjet Engine with Boundary-Layer Bleeding and Two-Staged Injection

  • In this study, a boundary-layer bleeding and a two-staged fuel injection were applied to a scramjet engine for suppressing unstart transition and improving the thrust performance under Mach 6 flight conditions. With the boundary-layer bleeding, the engine could operate without unstart transition around at the fuel equivalence ratio of unity ($\Phi$ = 1). The thrust increment from the no fuel condition (dF) increased to 2460 N, which was about 1.4 times as large as that of the case without the bleeding and maximum in our Mach 6 tests. It was confirmed that the boundary-layer bleeding suppressed the separation during the engine operation. The two-staged fuel injection was less effective for improving the thrust performance com-pared with the single-staged one with the bleeding at Mach 6.

터빈 동익 흡입면에서 발달하는 경계층의 유동특성 (Flow Characteristics of the Boundary Layer Developing over a Turbine Blade Suction Surface)

  • 본 연구에서는 발전용 터빈 제 1 단 동익 흡입면에서 발달하는 경계층유동에 대하여 체계적으로 연구하였다. 이를 위해 흡입면에서 열부하가 급격하게 변화하는 대표적인 영역에 대하여, 경계층의 평균 유속, 난류강도, 에너지스펙트럼 등을 측정하였다. 그 결과 흡입면 경계층유동이 층류에서 난류 경계층으로 천이됨을 확인할 수 있었고, 이 천이경로는 박리버블의 전단층에서 주로 발생하는 박리유동 천이로 확인되었다. 흡입면에서 열부하의 최소값이 존재하는 곳은 흡입면 경계층유동의 천이가 시작되는 위치에 해당하며, 열부하가 최대인 곳은 박리유동 천이가 모두 마무리되어 벽근처에 강력한 난류유동이 존재하는 곳과 일치하였다. 에너지스펙트럼의 측정을 통하여, 흡입면 경계층의 박리유동 천이 전후에 나타나는 난류운동에너지의 주파수 특성을 자세히 파악할 수 있었다.

자연층류 익형 설계 및 시험 (Design and Wind Tunnel Tests of a Natural Laminar Flow Airfoil)

  • Drag reduction is one of main concerns for commercial aircraft companies than ever because fuel price has been tripled in ten years. In this research, Natural Laminar Flow airfoil is designed and tested to reduce drag at cruise condition, $c_l$=0.3, Re=3.4${\times}$10$^6$ and M=0.6. NLF airfoil is characterized by delayed transition from laminar to turbulent flow, which comes from maintaining favorable pressure gradient to downstream. Transition is predicted by solving Boundary Layer equations in viscous boundary layer and by solving Euler Equation outside the boundary layer. Once boundary layer thickness and momentum thickness are obtained, $e^N$-method is used for transition point prediction. As results, KARI's NLF airfoil is designed and shows better characteristics than NLF-0115. The characteristics are tested and verified at low Reynolds numbers, but at high Reynolds numbers, laminar flow characteristics are not obtainable because of fully turbulent flow over airfoil surfaces. Precious experiences, however, relating NLF airfoil design, subsonic and transonic tests are acquired.

주기적 후류 내의 익형 위 천이경계층에 관한 실험적 연구(II) -위상평균된 유동특성- (Experimental Study of Boundary Layer Transition on an Airfoil Induced by Periodically Passing Wake (II) -A Phase-Averaged Characteristic-)

  • This paper describes the phenomena of wake-induced transition of the boundary layers on a NACA0012 airfoil using measured phase-averaged data. Especially, the phase-averaged wall shear stresses are reasonably evaluated using the principle of Computational Preston Tube Method. Due to the passing wake, the turbulent patch is generated in the laminar boundary layer on the airfoil and the boundary layer becomes temporarily transitional. The patches propagate downstream with less speed than free-stream velocity and merge with each other at further down stream station, and the boundary layer becomes more transitional. The generation of turbulent patch at the leading edge of the airfoil mainly depends on velocity defects and turbulent intensity profiles of passing wakes. However, the growth and merging of turbulent patches depend on local streamwise pressure gradients as well as characteristics of turbulent patches. In this transition process, the present experimental data show very similar features to the previous numerical and experimental studies. It is confirmed that the two phase-averaged mean velocity dips appear in the outer region of transitional boundary layer for each passing cycle. Relatively high values of the phase-averaged turbulent fluctuations in the outer region indicate the possibility that breakdown occurs in the outer layer not near the wall.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate influence of flow conditions on a boundary layer to the near-wake of a flat plate. The flow condition in the vicinity of trailing edge that is influenced by upstream condition history is an essential factor that determines the physical characteristics of a near-wake. Various tripping wires were used to change boundary layer flow condition of upstream at the freestream velocity of 6.0 m/sec. Measurements of the boundary layer and near-wake according to the change of upstream conditions were conducted by using both I-probe(55P14 for boundary layer) and X-probe(55P61 for wake). Normalized velocity profiles of the boundary layer were shown the flow types such as laminar boundary layer, transition, and turbulent boundary layer at 0.95C from the leading edge. The velocity and turbulence intensity profiles of the near-wake for the case of laminar boundary layer at the flat plate surface exhibited a defect and a double peak showing perfect symmetry, respectively.

  • PSE와 $e^N$-method를 이용하여 익형 위 경계층의 천이지점을 예측하였다. PSE 해석으로 부터 교란의 증폭률을 얻고 증폭률의 적분을 통해 N-factor 곡선들을 계산하였다. 평판 및 익형 위 경계층에 대한 계산결과를 기존 문헌 결과와 비교하여 코드의 검증을 수행하였다. NACA0012, NLF(1)-0414F 그리고 NLF(1)-0416 익형 위 경계층에 대한 천이지점을 예측을 수행하였다. 예측된 천이지점들이 실험결과들과 잘 일치함을 확인하였다.

PIV 기법을 이용한 초음속 평판 경계층의 속도 분포 측정 (Velocity profile measurement of supersonic boundary layer over a flat plate using the PIV technique)

  • 본 연구는 Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) 기법을 이용하여 마하수 2.96의 평판에 대해 층류, 천이, 난류 경계층의 속도 분포를 측정하였다. Schlieren 가시화 기법과 PIV 기법을 이용하여 앞전에서 발생한 경사 충격파가 평판 위의 유동장에 영향을 주는지 확인하였다. 층류 경계층의 경우, 실험에서 측정한 속도 분포가 압축성 Blasius 속도 분포를 만족하였다. 천이 경계층의 속도 분포는 벽면 부근부터 이론적인 난류 속도 분포로 변했으며, Re = $1.41{\times}10^6$에서 천이가 시작되었다. 난류 경계층 영역에서는 압축성 효과를 고려한 Van Driest 변환 속도가 비압축성 로그 법칙을 만족하였다. 또한 로그 구간이 끝나는 위치($y/{\delta}{\approx}0.28$)가 비압축성 난류 경계층($y/{\delta}{\approx}0.2$)에 비해 벽면에서 더 멀어진 것을 확인하였다.
