  • The viscous flow in an axisymmetric nozzle was analyzed while accounting for the mesh sizes in both in the free stream and the boundary layer. The Navier-Stokes equations were resolved using the finite volume method in order to determine the supersonic flow parameters at the exit of the converging-diverging nozzle. The numerical technique in the aforementioned method uses the flux vector splitting of Van Leer. An adequate time stepping parameter, along with the Courant, Friedrich, Lewis coefficient and mesh size level, was selected to ensure numerical convergence. The boundary layer thickness significantly affected the viscous flow parameters at the exit of the nozzle. The best solution was obtained using a very fine grid, especially near the wall at which a strong variation of velocity, temperature and shear stress was observed. This study confirmed that the boundary layer thickness can be obtained only if the size of the mesh is lower than a certain value. The nozzles are used at the exit of the shock tube in order to obtain supersonic flows for various tests. They also used in propulsion to obtain the thrust necessary to the displacement of the vehicles.

  • In order to investigate the abundance and transboundary fluxes of air pollutants over the Yellow Sea, airborne measurements were made aboard the SF-600 aircraft (Pan-Asia Engineering) in March, 1996. The data presented in this paper are preliminary results and airborne experiment will be carried out until 1999. The vertical profile of relevant meteorological parameters such as temperature, water vapor, wind direction and wind speed were also observed at Taean. Mixing layer height was about 1000~1100m during the flights. The SO$_2$ and NO$_{x}$ concentrations were 3~6 ppb and 5~7 ppb below 1000 m, within 1 ppb and 3~5 ppb at 1000~2000m, respectively. Backward trajectory analyses were also carried out. A mathematical method by Lelieveld et al.(1989) was used to estimate the flux of air pollutants through the planetary boundary layer of Yellow Sea area. Transboundary fluxes were calculated using the measurement results with respect to the pollutants concentration, depth of the planetary boundary layer, wind speed and wind direction. The estimated transboundary flux of SO$_2$through the western boundary of Korea was about 39~42 tons/hour.r.

  • In this paper, we investigated the improvement of characteristics of knock, emission and fuel consumption rate by optimizing the location and size of water transfer holes in cylinder head gasket without change of engine water jacket design itself. The cooling system was modified in the direction of reducing the metal temperature in the head and increasing the metal temperature in the block. The optimization of water transfer holes in cylinder head gasket was obtained by "flow visualization test". The water transfer holes were concentrated in front side of the engine in order to reduce thermal boundary layer in the water jacket of No. 2 and No. 3 combustion changer in the cylinder head, which would have a large knock intensity, and increase thermal boundary layer in the water jacket of the cylinder block. When the modified coolant flow pattern was applied as proposed in this paper, the knock characteristic was improved. The spark timing was advanced up to 2$^{\circ}$ in low and middle speed range at a full load. In addition, HC emission at MBT was reduced by 5.2%, and the fuel consumption rate was decreased up to 1% in the driving condition of 2400 rpm and 250 KPa. However, since this coolant flow pattern mentioned in this paper might deteriorate the performance of vehicle cooling system due to the coolant flow rate reduction, a properly optimized point should be obtained. obtained.

  • The dielectric properties and microstructure of SrTiO3-based grain boundary layer (GBL) capacitor were investigated, and SrTiO3 GBL capacitor was made by penetrating the Frit (PbO-Bi2O3-B2O3 system). The Nb2O5-doped SrTiO3 ceramics were fired for 4-hours, at 145$0^{\circ}C$ in H2-N2 atomsphere to get semiconductive ceramics. The grain size of SrTiO3 sintered at reduction atmosphere had increased as the amount of Nb2O5 increases and then decreased as the amount of Nb2O5 exceeded 0.2 mole%. Insulating reagents which contained PbO-Bi2O3-B2O3 system frit and oxide mixture were printed on the each semiconductive ceramics and fired at varying temperature and for different holding time. The optimum dielectric properties could be obtained by second heat treatment at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, when frit paste was printed. A SrTiO3-based GBLC had the apparent permitivity of about 3.2$\times$104, the dielectric loss of 0.01~0.02 and the stable temperature coefficient of capacitance. The influence of frit paste on dielectric properties was similiar to that of oxide paste but the stability of temperature property of capacitance was improved.

  • Since boundary layer transition has a significant impact on the aero-thermodynamic performance of hypersonic flight vehicles, capability of accurate prediction of transition location is essential for design and performance analysis. In this study, γ-Reθt model is improved to predict transition of hypersonic boundary layers and validated. A coefficient in the production term of the intermittency transport equation that affects the transition onset location is constructed and applied as a function of Mach number, wall temperature, and freestream stagnation temperature based on the similarity numerical solution of compressible boundary layer. To take into account a Mach number dependency of transition onset momentum thickness Reynolds number and transition length, additional correlation equations are determined as function of Mach number and applied to Reθc and Flength correlations of the baseline model. The suggested model is implemented to a commercial CFD code in consideration of practical use. Analysis of hypersonic flat plate and circular cone boundary layers is carried out by using the model for validation purpose. An improvement of prediction capability with respect to variation of Mach number and unit Reynolds number is identified from the comparison with experimental data.

  • Low resolution spectral modeling of water vapor is carried out by applying the weighted-sum-of-gray-gases model (WSGGM) to a narrow band. For a given narrow band, focus is placed on proper modeling of gray gas absorption coefficients vs. temeprature relation used for any solution methods for the Radiative Transfer Equation(RTE). Comparison between the modeled emissivity and the "true" emissivity obtained from a high temperatue statistical narrow band parameters is made ofr the total spectrum as well as for a few typical narrow bands. Application of the model to nonuniform gas layers is also made. Low resolution spectral intensities at the boundary are obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temeprature profiles using the obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temperature profiles using the obtained WSGGM's with 9 gray gases. The results are compared with the narrow band spectral intensities as obtained by a narrow band model-based code with the Curtis-Godson approximation. Good agreement is found between them. Local heat source strength and total wall heat flux are also compared for the cases of Kim et al, which again gives promising agreement.

  • High-temperature oxidation of a Ni-based superalloy was analyzed with samples taken from gas turbine blades, where the samples were heat-treated and thermally exposed. The effect of Cr/Ti/Al elements in the alloy on high temperature oxidation was investigated using an optical microscope, SEM/EDS, and TEM. A high-Cr/high-Ti oxide layer was formed on the blade surface under the heat-treated state considered to be the initial stage of high-temperature oxidation. In addition, a PFZ (γ' precipitate free zone) accompanied by Cr carbide of Cr23C6 and high Cr-Co phase as a kind of TCP precipitation was formed under the surface layer. Pits of several ㎛ depth containing high-Al content oxide was observed at the boundary between the oxide layer and PFZ. However, high temperature oxidation formed on the thermally exposed blade surface consisted of the following steps: ① Ti-oxide formation in the center of the oxide layer, ② Cr-oxide formation surrounding the inner oxide layer, and ③ Al-oxide formation in the pits directly under the Cr oxide layer. It is estimated that the Cr content of Ni-based superalloys improves the oxidation resistance of the alloy by forming dense oxide layer, but produced the σ or µ phase of TCP precipitation with the high-Cr component resulting in material brittleness.

  • We investigated seasonal variations of the upper ocean temperature and the mixed layer depth (MLD) in an eddy-permitting global ocean general circulation model (OGCM) to assess the OGCM perfermance. The OGCM is based on the GFDL MOM3 which has a horizontal resolution of 0.5 degree and 30 vertical levels. The OGCM was integrated for 68 years using a monthly-mean climatological wind stress forcing. The model sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface salinity were restored to the Levitus climatology with a time scale of 30 days. Annual-mean model SST shows a cold bias $(<\;-2^{\circ}C)$ in the summer hemisphere and a warm bias $(>\;1^{\circ}C)$ in the winter hemisphere mainly due to the restoring boundary condition of temperature. The model MLD captures well the observed features in most areas, with a slightly deep bias. However, in the Ross Sea and Weddell Sea, the model shows significantly deeper MLD than the climatology-mainly due to weak salinity stratifications in the model. For amplitude of seasonal variation, the model SST is smaller $(1{\sim}3^{\circ}C)$ than the observation largely due to the restoring surface boundary condition while the model MLD has larger seasonal variation $({\sim}50m)$. It is suggested that for more realistic simulation of the upper ocean structure in the present eddy-permitting ocean model, more refinements in the surface boundary condition for the thermohaline forcing and parameterization for vertical mixing are required, together with the incorporation of a sea-ice model.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the meteorological characteristics of wintertime high PM10 concentration episodes in Busan. $PM_{10}$ concentration has been reduced for the past four years and recorded near or exceeded 100 ${\mu}g/m^3$ (national standard of $PM_{10}$). High concentration episodes in Busan were 6 case, $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ ratio was 0.36~0.39(mean 0.55). High $PM_{10}$ concentration occurred during higher air temperature, more solar radiation and sunshine, lower relative humidity, and smaller cloud amount. Synoptically, it also occurred when Busan was in the center or the edge of anticyclone and when sea breeze intruded. An analysis of upper air sounding showed that high $PM_{10}$ concentration occurred when surface inversion layer and upper subsidence inversion layer existed, and when boundary layer depth and vertical mixing coefficient were low. An analysis of backward trajectory of air mass showed that high $PM_{10}$ concentration was largely affected by long range transport considering that it occurs when air mass is intruded from China.

  • The effect of heat treatment environment on the microstructure and properties of tantalum coating layer manufactured by kinetic spraying was examined. Heat treatments are conducted for one hour at $800^{\circ}C$, $900^{\circ}C$, and $1000^{\circ}C$ in two different environments of vacuum and Ar gas. Evaluation of microstructure and physical properties are conducted. High density ${\alpha}$-tantalum single phase coating layer with a porosity of 0.04% and hardness of 550 Hv can be obtained. As heat treatment temperature increases, porosity identically decreases regardless of heat treatment environment (vacuum and Ar gas). Hardness of heat treated coating layer especially in Ar gas environment deceases from 550 Hv to 490 Hv with increasing heat treatment temperature. That in vacuum environment deceases from 550 Hv to 530 Hv. The boundary between particles became vague as heat treatment temperature increases. Oxygen distribution of tantalum coating layer is minute after heat treatment in vacuum environment than Ar gas environment.
