  • In this study, we present the theoretical, numerical and experimental results of the sink flow from a rotating, circular tank Strikingly enough, when the upper free surface was set with no-slip boundary conditions, the Ekman boundary-layer develops not only above the bottom surface but under the free surface. The sink fluid is coming from the two Ekman layers, and the mass transfer from the bulk, inviscid region is dependent on the rotational speed. It is also remarkable to see that all the fluid gathered along the axis flows through a rapidly rotating fluid column with almost the same size as the hole.

  • Matching inviscid and boundary layer methods are developed for analysis of hypersonic flow with thick boundary layer. The new equations match all the boundary layer properties with a variation in the inviscid solution near the edge, except for the normal velocity. Computational comparison are peformed for incompressible and compressible flows over a flat plate. Results from the present method are compared with Wavier-Stokes solutions. The present results are in good agreement with Wavier-Stokes solutions. They show that the new technique can provide improved predictions of heating rates and skin friction predictions for preliminary design of vehicles where shear layers and entropy layer swallowing are importantfor for preliminary design.

  • We investigated the influence of the aspect ratio (H/R) of the oxide layer on the reactor vessel heating in three-layer configuration. Based on the analogy between heat and mass transfers, we performed mass transfer experiments to achieve high Rayleigh numbers ranging from $6.70{\times}10^{10}$ to $7.84{\times}10^{12}$. Two-dimensional (2-D) semi-circular apparatuses having the internal heat source were used whose surfaces of top, bottom and side simulate the interfaces of the oxide layer with the light metal layer, the heavy metal layer, and the reactor vessel, respectively. Multi-cell flow pattern was identified when the H/R was reduced to 0.47 or less, which promoted the downward heat transfer from the oxide layer and possibly mitigated the focusing effect at the upper metallic layer. The top boundary condition greatly affected the natural convection of the oxide layer due to the presence of secondary flows underneath the cold light metal layer.

  • Injection of microbubbles within the turbulent boundary layer has been investigated for several years as a method to achieve drag reduction. However, the physical mechanism of this phenomenon is not yet fully understood. Experiments in a channel flow for single phase (water) and two phase (water and microbubbles) flows with various void fraction values are studied for a Reynolds number of 5128 based on the half height of the channel and bulk velocity. The state-of-the art Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) measurement technique is used to measure the instantaneous full-field velocity components. Comparisons between turbulent statistical quantities with various values of local void fraction are presented to elucidate the influence of the microbubbles presence within the boundary layer. A decrease in the Reynolds stress distribution and turbulence production is obtained with the increase of microbubble concentration. The results obtained indicate a decorrelation of the streamwise and normal fluctuating velocities when microbubbles are injected within the boundary layer.

  • An experimental study was carried out in order to investigate the influence of flow conditions on a boundary layer in the near-wake of a flat plate. The flow conditions in the vicinity of the trailing edge that is influenced by upstream condition history are an essential factor that determines the physical characteristics of a near-wake. Tripping wires attached at various positions were selected to change flow conditions of a boundary layer. The flows such as laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layer at 0.98C from the leading edge are imposed in order to investigate the evolution of symmetric and asymmetric wake. An x-type hot-wire probe(55P61) is employed to measure at 8 stations in the near-wake. Test results show that the near-wake for the case of a turbulent boundary layer is relatively insensitive to instability after separating at the trailing edge, and Reynolds shear stress in the near-wake for the case of a turbulent boundary layer collapses due to turbulent kinetic energy.

  • The existing code which solves two-dimensional RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations and 2-equation turbulence model equations was modified to enable numerical simulation of various supersonic flows. For this, various boundary conditions have been implemented to the code. Bleed boundary condition was incorporated into the code for calculating wall mean flow quantities. Furthermore, boundary conditions for the turbulence quantities along rough surfaces as well as porous walls were applied to the code. The code was verified and validated by comparing the computational results against the experimental data for the supersonic flows over bleed region on a flat plate. Furthermore, numerical simulations for supersonic shock boundary layer interaction with a bleed region were performed and their results were compared with the existing computational results.

  • This paper describes the numerical computations of the interaction between the streamwise vortex and a flat plate 3-D turbulent boundary layer. In the present study, the main interest is in the behavior of the streamwise vortices introduced in turbulent boundary layers. The flow behind a vortex generator is modeled by the information that is avilable from studies on the dalta winglet. An algorithm of the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for three-dimensional turbulent flows, together with a two layer turbulent model to resolve the near-wall flow, is based on the method of artificial compressibility. The present results show boundary layer distortion due to vortices, such as strong spanwise flow divergence and boundary thinning, and have a good agreement with the experimental data.

  • This paper describes an economical prediction procedure for heat transfer phenomenon through a channel containing an abrupt asymmetric expansion in flow cross-seetional area. Numerical solutions for the flow field are obtained by the finite difference numerical method applied to the modified boundary layer equations. Modified boundary energy equation is used to analyze heat transfer as modified boundary momentum equation. Predictions of the method compare very favorable with exprimental data. Results of this study by modified boundary layer equation are as follows : 1. The computation time required for the scheme is at least an order of magnitude less than for the numerical solution of the full Navier-stokes and Energy eguations. 2. In laminar flow, the maximum heat transfer occurs downstream of the reattachment point.

  • Two-layered fluid with sloping bottom and top(${\beta}$-effect) in rigid cylinder is put on the rotating table. To drive the lower-layer motion in "the Sverdrup type" flow external fluid is pumped into the lower-layer. By introducing inlet-outlet system in the upper-layer, an analogy to the Tsushima Tsugaru, Soya of the East Sea has been tested. The position of the inlet-outlet system and the difference between the strength of inlet or outlet flow are changed to see the effects of the wind stress on the upper-layer. The northern part of inflow toward the outlet may be interpreted roughly as the position of the polar front in the East Sea. Experimental observations have revealed that the inflow flows along the western boundary before it separates into the interior and flows straight toward the outlet position. However, the wind effect is imposed upon the upper-layer, the western boundary flow branches into two parts of which one flows along the boundary and the other flows into the interior under the influence of negative wind stress curl, while southward western boundary flow seems to block the flow and deflect it to the interior. The changes in the position of inlet-outlet system produce more significant changes in flow pattern in that cyclonic flow in the north controls the northern extent of the polar front by deflecting the northward interior motion toward the west(outlet). Interface displacement which depends strongly on the velocity difference between two layers seems to play crucial role in terms of the path of upper-layer flow, particularity, the inflow.

  • Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has been popularly applied and used in the last several decades to simulate turbulent boundary layer in the numerical domain. A fully developed turbulent boundary layer has also been applied to predict the complicated wake flow behind bluff bodies. In this study we aimed to generate an artificial turbulent boundary layer, which is based on an exponential correlation function, and generates a series of realistic three-dimensional velocity data in two-dimensional inlet section which are correlated both in space and in time. The results suggest its excellent capability for high Reynolds number flows. To make an effective generation, a hexahedral mesh has been used and Cholesky decomposition was applied to possess suitable turbulent statistics such as the randomness and correlation of turbulent flow. As a result, the flow characteristics in the domain and fluctuating pressure near the wall are very close to those of fully developed turbulent boundary layers.
