Identification and suppression of vibrational energy in stiffened plates with cutouts based on visualization techniques

  • The visualizing energy flow and control in vibrating stiffened plates with a cutout are studied using finite element method. The vibration intensity, vibration energy and strain energy distribution of stiffened plates with cutout at different excitation frequencies are calculated respectively and visualized for the various cases. The cases of different size and boundaries conditions of cutouts are also investigated. It is found that the cutout or opening completely changes the paths and distributions of the energy flow in stiffened plate. The magnitude of energy flow is significantly larger at the edges near the cutout boundary. The position of maximum strain energy distribution is not corresponding to the position of maximum vibrational energy. Furthermore, the energy-based control using constrained damping layer (CDL) for vibration suppression is also analyzed. According to the energy distribution maps, the CDL patches are applied to the locations that have higher energy distribution at the targeted mode of vibration. The energy-based CDL treatments have produced significant attenuation of the vibration energy and strain energy. The present energy visualization technique and energy-based CDL treatments can be extended to the vibration control of vehicles structures.

  • Chattering phenomenon is still a large drawback of VSS. To overcome this problem, various approaches have been reported. A new notion of sliding sector has been proposed recently. In this paper, fuzzy control with time-varying boundary layer using the sliding sector theory with continued input function in the sector is proposed. This paper analyzes the stability, using Lyapunov function on the sliding sector. Computer simulation for inverted pendulum results in elimination of the chattering phenomenon.

  • A DSP-based nonlinear speed control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) which is robust to unknown parameter variations and speed measurement error is presented. The model reference adaptive system(MRAS) based adaptation mechanisms for the estimation of slowly varying parameters are derived using the Lyapunov stability theory. For the disturbances or quickly varying parameters, a quasi-linearized and decoupled model including the influence of parameter variations and speed measurement error on the nonlinear speed control of the PMSM is derived. Based on this model, a boundary layer integral sliding mode controller to improve the robustness and performance of a PMSM drive is designed and compared with the conventional controller. To show the validity of the proposed control scheme, simulations and experimental works are carried out and compared with the conventional control scheme.

An Experimental Study of Coanda Effect on the Flapped Control Surfaces (콴다효과를 응용한 플랩이 달린 고양력 날개장치에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • To investigate the jet effect on circulation control, a segment of model was prepared and inserted horizontally across the test section of the cavitation tunnel. The hydrodynamic forces acting on the model were measured under the 2 dimensional flow behavior. Circulation flow control requires higher flow rate of water jet than boundary layer control does. Jet injection is effective in increasing lift coefficient and the increments reach to 160% in a certain combination of parameters such as an angle of attack, jet flow rate and flap angle. The blown water jet not only reduces form drag but also thrust effect, which is sometimes greater than the form drag in specific conditions.

  • The variable structure control(VSC) with sliding mode is an important and interesting topic in modern control of nonlinear systems. However, the discontinuous control law in VSC leads to undesirable chattering in practice. As a method solving this problem, in this paper, we propose a scheme of the VSC with neural network sliding surface. A neural network sliding surface with boundary layer is employed to solve discontinuous control law. The proposed controller can eliminate the chattering problem of the conventional VSC. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified by simulation results.

  • A DSP-based robust nonlinear speed control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) is presented. A quasi-linearized and decoupled model including the influence of parameter variations and speed measurement error on the nonlinear speed control of a PMSM is derived. Based on this model, a boundary layer integral sliding mode controller to improve the robustness and performance of the nonlinear speed control of a PMSM is designed and compared with the conventional controller. To show the validity of the proposed control scheme, simulations and experimental works are carried out and compared with the conventional control scheme.

  • A control approach for the robust position control of induction motors based on the binary disturbance observer is described. The conventional binary disturbance observer is used to remove the chattering problem of a sliding mode disturbance observer. However, the steady state error may exist in the conventional binary disturbance observer because it estimates external disturbance with a constant boundary layer. In order to overcome this problem, new binary disturbance observer with an integral augmented switching hyperplane is proposed. The robustness is achieved, and the continuous control is realized by employing the proposed observer without the chattering problem and the steady state error. The effectiveness of the proposed observer is confirmed by the comparative experimental results.

  • This paper presents a sensorless speed control of cylindrical permanent magnet synchronous motors(PMSM) using an adaptive integral binary observer In view of composition with a main loop regulator and an auxiliary loop regulator, the binary observer has a property of the chattering alleviation in the constant boundary layer. However, the steady state estimation accuracy and robustness are dependent upon the width of the constant boundary. In order to improve the steady state performance of the binary observer, the binary observer is formed by adding extra integral dynamics to the switching hyperplane equation. With the help of integral characteristic, the rotor speed can be finely estimated and utilized for a sensorless speed controller for PMSM. Since the Parameters of the dynamic equations such as machine inertia or a viscosity friction coefficient are lot well known, there are many restrictions in the actual implementation. The proposed adaptive integral binary observer applies an adaptive scheme so that observer may overcome the problem caused by using the dynamic equations and the rotor speed is constructed by using the Lyapunov function. The observer structure and its design method are described. The experimental results of the proposed algorithm are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

SUPERSONIC INLET BUZZ CONTROL USING CORRECTED BLEED MODEL (보정한 Bleed 모델을 이용한 초음속 흡입구 버즈 제어)

  • Database of a bleed model has been corrected and numerical simulations have been performed to control buzz using the corrected bleed model. The existing bleed model, which was developed as a part of a boundary condition model for porous bleed walls, underestimates bleed flow rate because flow accelerations near the bleed regions are ignored. Also, it overpredicts the sonic flow coefficient when the bleed plenum pressure ratio is high. To correct these problems, and to enhance the performance of the bleed model, the database has been corrected using CFD simulations to compensate for the flow acceleration near the bleed region. Futhermore, the database of the bleed model is extended with the second order extrapolation. The corrected bleed model is validated with numerical simulations of a shock-boundary layer interaction problem over a solid wall with a bleed region. Using the corrected bleed model, numerical simulations of supersonic inlet buzz are performed to find the deterrent effects of bleed on buzz. The results reveal that bleed is effective to prevent buzz and to enhance the inlet performance.

Experimental Assessment of the Drag Reduction Efficiency of the Outer-layer Vertical Blades (외부경계층 수직 날의 저항저감효과에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • An experimental assessment has been made of the drag reducing efficiency of the outer-layer vertical blades, which were first devised by Hutchins (2003). The drag reduction efficiency of the blades was reported to reach as much as 30%. The assessment of the drag reducing efficiency is mainly restricted to the downstream region of the blades. Indeed, sufficient care has not been taken to such adverse effects as the increase in the wetted surface area and the flow disturbances due to the presence of the blades. In the present study, a series of drag force measurements in towing tank and circulating water channel has been performed toward the assessments of the total drag reduction efficiency of the outer-layer vertical blades.
