This paper proposes the use of a porous core between layers of laminated composite plates to examine its effect on the natural frequencies of the resulted porous laminated composite sandwich plate (PLCSP) resting on a two-parameter elastic foundation. Moreover, it has been suggested that the dispersion of porosity has two different functionally graded (FG) patterns which are compared with a uniformly dispersed (UD) profile to find their best vibrational efficiency in the proposed PLCSPs. In FG patterns, two types of dispersions, including symmetric (FG-S) and asymmetric (FG-A) patterns have been considered. To derive the governing Eigen value equation of such structures, the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) of plates has been employed. Accordingly, a finite element method (FEM) is developed to solve the derived Eigen value equation. Using the mentioned theory and method, the effects of porosity parameters, fiber orientation of laminated composite, geometrical dimensions, boundary conditions and elastic foundation on the natural frequencies of the proposed PLCSPs have been studied. It is observed that embedding porosity in core layer leads to a significant improvement in the natural frequencies of PLCSPs. Moreover, the natural frequencies of PLCSPs with FG porous core are higher than those with UD porous core.

Boundary layer equations (partial differential equations) can be transformed to ordinary diffential equations with constant coeffieients in terms of similarity transformed to ordinary differential equations with constant coeffieients in terms of similarity transformations in the heat tranfer analysis on the surface of any axiaymmetric boiles. The azimuth functions can not be uniquely determined because of the singular behavior at the stagnation point(X=0.deg.).In spite of the azimuth functions behaving singularly, many of researchers have analyzed the heat transfer problem on a horizontal chlinder or a sphere, supposing the set of solutions( $H_{1}$ & G$_{1}$) of being yieled from the simple differential equation to be unique solution of therazimuth functions. In order to ascertain whether mathematical incompatibility as mentioned above can be admitted in the viewpoint of enginerring or not, condensation heat transfer coefficients on a sphere are computed for all azimuth functions( $H_{1}$ G$_{1}$ & $H_{2}$ G$_{2}$) and comparisons with the experimental result are discussed.

At present there are many theories as to how various lubricants used in forging perform the role of reducing friction. Little work has been carried out to determine the validity of these theories for solid lubricants. This paper covers the development and preliminary results of the experiments devised to illustrate the movement of graphite at the workpiece/tool interface in the work forging temperature range. The paper describes the results obtained from upsetting of rings between two flat dies for measurement of lubricant thickness and compaction of graphite for density-pressure relationship. These allowed the lubricant to be exposed to forging conditions and by applying the principles of Male's ring test the simple generation of a value fur friction factor could also be determined. The experiments have been undertaken to examine the behavior of lubricant for shot blasted surface and change of surface roughness. A simple computer model of the interface has been constructed characterizing the graphite layer in an attempt to simulate the boundary mechanics.

The flow characteristics of a two-dimensional offset jet issuing parallel to a rough wall is experimentally investigated by using a split film probe with the modified Stock's calibration method. The mean velocity and turbulent stresses profiles in the up and down-stream locations of the wall-attachment regions are measured and compared with those of the smooth wall attaching offset jet cases. It is found that the wall-attachment region on the rough wall is wider than on the smooth wall for the same offset height and the jet speed. The position of the maximum velocity point is farther away from the wall than that for the smooth wall case because of the thick wall boundary layer established by the surface roughness. It is concluded that the roughness of the wall accelerates the relaxation process to a redeveloped plane wall jet and produces a quite different turbulent diffusion behavior especially near the wall from comparing with the smooth plane wall jet turbulence.
The flow characteristics of film coolant issuing into turbulent boundary layer developing on a convex surface have been investigated by means of flow visualization and three-dimensional velocity measurement. The Schlieren optical system with a spark light source was adopted to visualize the jet trajectory injected at 35° and 90° inclination angles. A five-hole directional pressure probe was used to measure three-dimensional mean velocity components at the injection angle of 35°. Flow visualization shows that at the 90° injection, the jet flow is greatly changed near the jet exit due to strong interaction with the crossflow. On the other hand, the balance between radial pressure gradient and centrifugal force plays an important role to govern the jet flow at the 35° injection. The velocity measurement shows that at a velocity ratio of 0.5, the curvature stabilizes downstream flow, which results in weakening of the bound vortex structure. However, the injectant flow is separated from the convex wall gradually, and the bound vortex maintains its structure far downstream at a velocity ratio of 1.98 with two pairs of counter rotating vortices.

One major problem in the model testing is the boundary effect and size effect caused by the limit in the size of the container. To overcome this problem, various types of laminar boxes are gradually manufactured and used in the shaking table test, which ideally has zero stiffness to horizontal shear. In this study, a small-scale laminar box is manufactured, which is composed of 6 thin aluminum rectangular hollow plates, and its inside dimensions are 300 mm length by 200 mm width by 350 mm depth. Shaking table tests are performed both with the laminar box and the rigid box under the same conditions, where displacements and accelerations are measured at various points of the box and model ground. As result of analyzing the measured data, during the propagation of input seismic motion from the bottom to the ground surface, the relative displacement of the model ground and the amplification of acceleration is hardly amplified in the rigid box. Because of the effect of stress waves reflecting from the rigid wall, the acceleration is slightly decreased at the edge in the rigid box. The laminar box, manufactured in this study, has a problem in that the soil behavior at the edge of ground surface is affected by the inertia force of the top layer due to its excessive self-weight.

In this study, a FEM analysis is undertaken of a rubber sleeve which is mounted onto a spreading mandrel so as to avoid marking the first wrappings of coils (known as the 'end-mark'), as occasionally occurs when a concentrated load is placed on the edge of a steel sheet, significantly reducing its quality. A commercial numerical package, ANSYS, was utilized to analyze the structural behavior of the rubber sleeve. In general, the strain of the sleeve increases as the thickness of the rubber layer (H) covering the tubes increases, thus also increasing the surface of the sleeve for a constant boundary condition, and decreasing the pitch (P) between each tube, resulting in an increase in the strain on the surface of the sleeve for all rubber thickness conditions tested here. In a comparison of two different materials, rubber and urethane, when H=3 mm and P=1.1D, the maximum total deformations in these cases are 0.12669 mm and 0.086623 mm, respectively.
Using a mathematical theory, we show that the optimality condition of a turbulent diffuser with maximum pressure recovery at the exit is zero shear stress along the wall. The optimal diffuser shape is designed through iterative procedures by using the $k-{\varepsilon}-{\nu}^{2}-f$ turbulence model for flow simulation. The Reynolds number based on the bulk mean velocity and the channel height at the diffuser entrance is 18,000. We also perform large eddy simulation to validate the shape design results and investigate the flow characteristics near the zero-skin friction wall. Results from large eddy simulation show that the skin friction is slightly higher than zero but is still very small as compared to that of the flat plate boundary layer flow Although the time-averaged wall shear stress is slightly above zero along the diffuser wall, instantaneous flow reversals occur intermittently. The streamwise mein velocity shows an asymptotic behavior of the half-power-law near the wall where the skin friction is close to zero.

A simplified model in the shape of a wedge box with an opening on the roof was used to generate buffeting conditions at HMC. These measurements performed in controlled conditions are intended to validate the ability of CFD tools to predict buffeting. The results obtained by PowerFLOW are presented in this paper for buffeting and for the boundary layer development on the roof of the model when the roof opening is closed. The flow mechanisms that explain the behavior of the experimental sound pressure level(SPL) curve are described, and an improved setup is used to reproduce the flow structures that lead to the measured SPL.

The substantial loss behind axial flow rotor was generated by wake, various vortices in the hub region and the leakage vortex in the tip region. Particularly, the leakage vortex formed near blade tip was one of the main causes of the reduction of performance, the generation of noise and the aerodynamic vibration in rotor downstream. In this study, the three-dimensional flowfields in an axial flow rotor for various tip clearances were calculated, and the numerical results were compared with the experimental ones. The numerical technique was based on SIMPLE algorithm using standard k-.epsilon. model (WFM). Through calculations, the effects of the tip clearance on the overall performance of rotor and the loss distributions, and the increase in the displacement, momentum, and blade-force-deficit thickness of the casing wall boundary layer were investigated. The mass-averaged flow variables behind rotor agreed well with the experimental results. The presence of the tip leakage vortex behind rotor was described well. Although the loci of leakage vortex by calculation showed some differences compared with the experimental results, its behavior for various tip clearances was clarified by examining the loci of vortex center.
