Due to a high portion of mountainous terrains in Korea, debris flow and its disasters have been increased. In addition, recently localized flash-floods caused by climate change should add frequencies and potential risks. Grasping and understanding the behaviors of debris flow would allow us to prevent the consequent disasters caused by its occurrence. In this study, we developed a number of cases by changing the bottom slopes and their curvatures and investigated their effects on potential damage caused by the debris flow using FLO-2D. As simulating each bed slopes we analyzed for velocity, depth, impact, reach distance, and reach shape. As a result the lower the average slope, the greater the influence of its curvature and the numerical results were analyzed with showed a well-marked difference in impact stress and flow velocity. The result from this study could be referred for protecting from the debris flows when design countermeasure structures in mountainous regions.

Debris flow is one of the most hazardous natural processes in mountainous regions. The degradation of discharge capacity of drainage facilities due to debris flows may result in damages of properties and casualty as well as road. Understanding and accurate reproducing flow behaviour of debris flows at various conditions, such as sediment volume concentration and approaching channel and culvert slopes, are prerequisite to develop advanced design criteria for drainage facilities to prevent such damages. We carried out a series of laboratory experiments of debris flows in a rectangular channel of constant width with an abrupt change of bottom slope. The experimental flume consists of an approaching channel part with the bed slope ranging $15^{\circ}$ to $30^{\circ}$ and the test channel with slope ranging from $0^{\circ}$ to $12^{\circ}$ which mimics a typical drainage culvert. The experiments have been conducted for 22 test cases with various flow conditions of channel slopes and sediment volume concentration of debris flows to investigate those effects on the behaviour of debris flows. The results show that, according to sediment volume concentration, the depth of debris flow is approximately 50% to 150% larger than that of fresh water flow at the same flow rate. Experimental results quantitatively present that flow behaviour and deposit history of debris flows in the culvert depend on the slopes of the approaching and drainage channels and sediment volume concentration. Based on the experimental results, furthermore, a logistic model is developed to find the optimized culvert slope which prevents the debris flow from depositing in the culvert.
The propagation of impact wave induced by landslide and debris flow occurred on the slope of lake, reservoir and bays is a three-dimensional natural phenomenon associated with strong interaction of debris flow and water flow in complex geometrical environments. We carried out 3D numerical modeling of such impact wave in a bay using a multiphase turbulence flow model and a rheology model for non-Newtonian debris flow. Numerical results are compared with previous experimental result to evaluate the performance of present numerical approach. The results underscore that the reasonable predictions of both thickness and speed of debris flow head penetrating below the water surface are crucial to accurately reproduce the maximum peak height and free surface profiles of impact wave. Two predictions computed using different initial debris flow thicknesses become different from the instant when the peaks of impact waves fall due to the gravity. Numerical modeling using relatively thick initial debris flow thickness appears to well reproduce the water surface profile of impact wave propagating across the bay as well as wave run-up on the opposite slope. The results show that the maximum run-up height on the opposite slope is not sensitive to the initial thickness of debris flows of same total volume. Meanwhile, appropriate rheology model for debris flow consisting of inviscid particle only should be employed to more accurately reproduce the debris flow propagating along the channel bottom.
High-resolution (3.5 kHz) subbottom profiles were analyzed in order to reveal sedimentation pattern of late Quaternary in the northern South Shetland continental margin and the South Scotia Sea, Antarctica. On the basis of clarity, continuity and geometry of surface and subbottom echoes together with seafloor topography, high-resolution echo characters are classified into eight echo types which represent rock basements (echo type III-1), coarse-grained subglacial till or moraine (echo type I-1), slides/slumps (echo type IV), debris-flow deposits (echo types II-3 and III-2), and bottom-current deposits (echo types I-2, II-1 and II-2). Subglacial till or moraine (echo type I-1) is mostly present in the lower continental shelf and upper continental slope of the northern South Shetland continental margin, which changes downslope to slides/slumps (echo type IV) and debris-flow deposits (echo types II-3 and III-2) in the middle to lower continental slope. This distribution suggests that the continental slopes of the northern South Shetland continental margin were mostly affected by downslope gravitational processes. Further downslope, bottom-current sediments (echo type I-2) deposited by the southwestward flowing Antarctic Deep Water (ADW) occur at the South Shetland Trench, reflecting an Interaction between mass flows and bottom currents in the area. In contrast to the northern South Shetland continental margin, the South Scotia Sea is dominated by bottom-current deposits (echo types II-1 and II-2), indicating that the sedimentation was mostly controlled by the westward flowing ADW. Flow intensity of the ADW has increased in the relative topographic highs, forming thin covers of coarse-grained contourites (echo type II-1), whereas it has decreased in the relative topographic lows, depositing thick, fine-grained contourites (echo type II-2). The poor development of wave geometry in the fine-grained bottom-current deposits (echo type II-2) is suggestive of the unsteady nature of the ADW flow.
The bottom-simulating reflector (BSR) is the most commonly observed seismic indicator of gas hydrate in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea. We processed ten representative seismic reflection profiles, selected from a large data set, for amplitude variation with offset (AVO) analysis of the BSR to estimate gas-hydrate concentrations. First, BSRs were divided into five groups based on their seismic amplitudes and associated sediment types: (1) very high-amplitude BSRs in turbidite/hemipelagic sediments, (2) high-amplitude BSRs in debris-flow deposits, (3) moderate-amplitude BSRs in turbidite/hemipelagic sediments, (4) very low-amplitude BSRs in debris-flow deposits, and (5) very low-amplitude BSRs in seismic chimneys. The AVO responses of the group 1 and 3 BSRs are characterized by a rapid decrease and a relatively slow decrease in magnitude with offset, respectively. The AVO response of the group 2 BSR is characterized by a relatively slow increase in magnitude with offset. The AVO responses of the groups 4 and 5 BSRs are characterized by a flat AVO with very small zero-offset amplitude. Theoretical AVO curves, based on the three-phase Biot theory, suggest that the group 1 and 3 BSRs may be related to high (> 40%) concentrations of gas hydrate whereas the group 2 BSRs may indicate low (< 20%) concentrations of gas hydrate. The AVO responses of the group 4 and 5 BSRs cannot be compared with the theoretical models because of their very small zero-offset amplitudes. The comparison of the AVO response of the BSR at the UBGH-04 well with theoretical models suggests about 10% gas-hydrate concentration above the gas-hydrate stability zone.

A model of landslides is developed using the shallow water equations to simulate time-dependent performance of landslides. The shallow water equations are derived using the (b, s) coordinate system which can be applied in both river and ocean. The finite volume scheme employing the HLL approximate Riemann solver and the total variation diminishing (TVD) limiter is applied to deal with the numerical discontinuities occurring in landslides. For dam-break water flow and debris flow, numerical results are compared with analytical solutions and experimental data and good agreements are observed. The developed landslide model is successfully applied to predict subaerial and submarine landslides. It is found that the subaerial landslide propagates faster than the submarine landslide and the speed of propagation becomes faster with steeper bottom slope and less bottom roughness.

This study proposed detection method of Marine debris using unmanned aerial photography. For unmanned aerial photography, a RC(Radio Control) helicopter which has good movability and economics was used. To a camera mounting, a gimbal equipment was attached to the bottom of the RC helicopter. The gimbal equipment is very useful because it is not seriously affected by vibration and rolling. In addition, we invented that digital image processing algorithm using Matlab program for detection of marine debris from photographs. Particularly, background subtraction in invented algorithm was applied. As a result, marine debris of a variety of forms from different sand states of coast were reliably detected. In the future, monitoring using proposed method was expected to contribute that the solution to representative problem of monitoring area selecting and estimate the total litter mass over the beach. Moreover, It is considered a greater application possibility to marine environmental observations.
The most dominant type of landslide in Korea is debris flows which mostly take place along mountain slopes during the rainy season, July to August. The landslides have been reported to begin activation when rainfall is more than 200mm within 2days. The debris flows are usually followed by translational slips which occur upper part of mountain slopes and they transit to debris flow as getting down to the valleys. Lithology, location, slope inclination, grain size distribution of soil, permeability, dry density and porosity have been proved as triggering factor causing translational slides. The triggering data taken from mapping are statistically analysed to get landslide potential quantitatively. Rock mass creeps mostly occur on well bedded sedimentary rocks in Kyeongsang Basin. Although the displacement of rock mass creep is relatively small about 1m, the creep can cause severe hazards due to relatively large volume of the involved rock mass. Examples are rock mass creep occurred in the mouth of Hwangryongsan Tunnel, in Chilgok and in Sachon in 1999. Although the direct factor of the creeps are due to slope cutting at the foot area, more attention is required A rotational slide occurring within thick soil formation or weathered rock is also closely related to bottom part of slope cutting. It is propagated circular or semi-circular type. Especially in korea, the rotational slide may be frequently occurred in Tertiary tuff area. Because they are mainly composed of volcanic ash and pyroclastic materials, well developed joints and high degree of swelling and absorption can easily cause the slide. The landslide among the Pohang-Guryongpo national road is belong to this type of slide.
The distribution of the taxonomical composition and the density of meiobenthos depending on the sediment type has been studied in bottom sediments of Nha Trang Bay. The maximal population density and the taxonomical diversity were observed in the silted coarse and heterogeneous sand ($1031.4{\pm}419.7\;ind.\;10\;cm^{-2}$), whereas the minimal level of density and diversity ($588.1{\pm}152.5\;ind.\;10cm^{-2}$) was in the coarse and heterogeneous sand with shell debris and corals. The correlation between the median diameter of sediment particles and population density of meiobenthos has been revealed (r=0.82, p<0.05). In bottom sediments of Nha Trang Bay, twenty six taxonomic groups of meiobenthos were observed. Nematodes dominated in all sediment types. Representatives of four orders, twenty eight families and ninety seven genera of marine nematodes were identified. The vertical distribution of meiobenthos in different sediment types was considered. A sediment column (10 cm height) was sectioned by five 2 cm portions. In the last layer (8-10 cm) the most number of meiobenthic groups was found in sandy sediments. In the lower layers of silt sediments, only nematodes were found.
Poly(ethylene glycol)-PPB two phase system was used tot the purification of $\beta$-galactosidase from Lactobacillus sporogenes. The smaller the molecular weight of concentration of PEG phase in-creased, proteins as well as $\beta$-galactosidase was partitioned into the top phase. All cell debris were confined to the potassium phosphate phase (bottom phase), approached to the binodial line. The purification ratio increased by changing the polymer-salt composition of the tie line towards higher salt concentrations. It was also possible to obtain higher purification of the enzyme after two-step extraction using PEG 1000 and PEG 300. The top phase contained 74% of the total $\beta$-galactosidase with a purification factor of 2.1.
