  • The concept design of a riser for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion in 10 MW is proposed and its dynamic behaviour characteristics is analyzed with numerical method. A riser pipe with a hollow along its thickness in the cross-section to increase the effective modulus of its cross-section is designed considering the manufacture. The riser pipe without hollows along its thickness needs a lumped weight at the bottom end of a riser in order to keep its vertical hanging configuration from large buoyancy and the strong current. The riser is designed to control its density by inserting materials in high or low density into a hollow. The dynamic behaviour characteristics of the two designed risers is evaluated with the developed numerical analysis tool. The combined stress of the riser with a lumped weight is showed to be dominated by weight of a lumped mass. The riser with no hollow shows large combined stress near sea surface by strong current. Local structural analysis for the cross-section of a hollow riser is needed in detail.

  • Holocene plaeoenvironmental changes were interpreted by grain size and mineral analyses of a piston core (HB 13-2), obtained along the western slope of the Hupo Basin, Korea. The core sediments are characterized by two discrete, sedimentary facies: upper unit (0-0.4 mbsf) dominated by bioturbation structures with weak lamination, and lower unit (0.4-3.3 mbsf) characterized by intensified bioturbation toward bottom. Analysis of sensitive grain size and sortable silt demonstrated that the inflow of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) into the Hupo Basin strengthen from the period of sediment deposition over 0.82 mbsf. The minerals of the core sediments are composed mainly of quartz, microcline, orthoclase, albite and clay minerals including chlorite, kaolinite and illite. No noticeable changes of the mineral percentage was observed according to the grain size and depth of the samples. The integral breadth (${\Delta}^{\circ}2{\theta}$) of clay minerals from 1.4 mbsf to top layer shows an increasing trend, which clearly means climate warming from the period of sediment deposition above 1.4 mbsf. This interval correlates with the Holocene climate optimum at Mid Holocene.

  • We developed an 4.5" $192{\times}64$ active matrix organic light-emitting diode display on a glass using organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) switching-arrays with two transistors and a capacitor in each sub-pixel. The OTFTs has bottom contact structure with a unique gate insulator and pentacene for the active layer. The width and length of the switching OTFT is $800{\mu}m$ and $10{\mu}m$ respectively and the driving OTFT has $1200{\mu}m$ channel width with the same channel length. On/off ratio, mobility, on-current of switching OTFT and on-current of driving OTFT were $10^6,0.3{\sim}0.5\;cm^2/V{\cdot}sec$, order of 10 ${\mu}A$ and over 100 ${\mu}A$, respectively. AMOLEDs composed of the OTFT switching arrays and OLEDs made using vacuum deposition method were fabricated and driven to make moving images, successfully.

  • To investigate the relationships between ocean environmental characteristics and thechange of the catch, we analyzed various environmental factors such as mean temperature, salinity, current vectors, lunar day and wind vectors from 1995 to 1996 and the catch fluctuation of Hanlim set net from 1994 to 1996. The results are as follow ; 1) The proportion of fishes caught in Hanlim set net is highest for horse mackere1 ($69.2\%$) and is followed by common mackerel ($18.4\%$), hair tail ($5.6\%$), squid ($2.7\%$) and rabbit fish ($1.4\%$) in order. Two peaks in the monthly catch appeared in June and October in the operation period of May- December. 2) The flow direction was northward in flood time and southeastward in ebb time around the Hanlim set net. Thus, the vortical mixing of sea water was active and continued for more than 3 hours. In addition, mean daily temperature was low due to the presence of middle and bottom water in offshore. Increase in salinity or high salinity of sea water provides a favorable condition for catches of fishes. Catches in the first quarter and the last quarter of the moon were larger than that in full moon and the last of the month. In particular, when south or southeasterly wind velocity reaches about 3$\~$6.5 m/s, the possibility of catches increases.

  • A series of sheps-of-opportunity sea sryface temperature (SST) measurement beween Jeju and Wando during a period from December 1979 through June 1981 produced following results. 1. A sihnificantly warm water appeared south of Chuja Island and Cheongsan Island during Island. It is suggested that this water represents a current entering the Jeju Strait from the west. Direction of this currint in other seasons is not certain. 2. Coastal waters were found north of the Cheongsan Island and Bogil Islhnd throughout the measurement period. In February these waters sometimes reached as far as Chuja Island to south. 3. Frequently thermal fronts were observed near the Chuja Island and the Cheongsan Island. 4. In summer cold waters appeared north of the Chuja Island and Changsu Island. Intrusion of cold bottom water from offshore and its subsequent vertical mixing due to strong tidal current are probably reponsible for this appearance. 5. Cold waters also appeared locally around islands and in ghe Jeju Harbor in spring and summer. 6. North-south SST difference reached 8-9$^{\circ}C$ in winter which is the annual maximum. 7. Annual range of SST varies from 12-14$^{\circ}C$ in the central part of the Jeju Strait to 16-20$^{\circ}C$ in coastal waters to north. The highest SST appeared everywhere in September but the lowest one did not appesr in the same month of year.

  • This paper presents the fabrication of a metal-insulator-metal(MIM) antifuse structure consisting of insulators sandwiched between top electrode, Al, and bottom electrode, TiW and additionally studies on antifuse properties depending on the condition of insulator. The intermetallic insulators, prepared by means of sputter, comprised of silicon oxide and tantalum oxide. In such an antifuse structure, silicon oxide layer is utilized to decrease the leakage current and tantalum oxide layer, of which the dielectric strength is lower than that of silicon oxide, is also utilized to lower the breakdown voltage near 10V. Finally sufficient low leakage current, below 1nA, and low programming voltage, about 9V, could be obtained in antifuse device comprising $Al/Ta_{2}O_{5}(10nm)/SiO_{2}(10nm)/TiW$ structure and OFF resistance of 3$3.65M{\Omega}$ and ON resistance of $7.26{\Omega}$ could be also obtained. This $Ta_{2}O_{5}/SiO_{2}$ based antifuse structures will be promising for highly reliable programmable device.

  • In order to illustrate the variation cf stratification and to know the effects of the temperature and the salinity on the stratification in the South Sea of Korea, the stratification parameter defined as potential energy anomaly (PEA, $V(J/m^3)$) introduced by Simpson and Hunter (1974) was used. The oceanographic data were obtained in August 1999 and February 2000 by National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI). V in August is generally high in offshore and low in near shore. However, in February, V in the near shore is higher than that cf the offshore due to the vertical temperature gradient between surface and bottom layer caused by the expansion of South Korean Coastal Waters (SKCW). In summer, the increase of the atmospheric heating acts on the stratification as the buoyancy forcing. In most cases, the effect cf the temperature on the stratification is stronger than that of the salinity. The temperature effect is predominantly due to the extent of the intrusion of Tsushima Warm Current into the study area. However, at stations where V is high the effect of the salinity is also significant. In winter, V is very low due to the decrease cf the buoyancy forcing, but some stations show the relatively high V due to the expansion of SKCW and salinity in winter unlike that in summer makes the stratification weak.

  • Cheonan, Republic of Korea Navy patrol ship sank had happened by an unknown incident in the vicinity of Baekryeongdo southwest 1.6km(1 mile) sea at 21:45 on March 26, 2010. In terms of coastal researcher's point of view, it is meaningful to provide the sea condition of basic data necessary for search and rescue, more detailed predictions and inference data through the numerical simulations. Thus, in this study, we investigated the weather, wave, tide, tidal current, bottom soil conditions, and suspended sediment are investigated at the coast of Baekryeong-Daechung islands. And based on these data, the characteristics of sea conditions were analyzed. The tidal period at the time of incident corresponds between neap tide to mean tide. Until April 3-4 after March 26, the date of incident, the strongest velocity was progressed towards the spring tide. Thus, it was considered to be difficult to search and rescue operations. Also, because the ebb tide was in progress during 21:00 to 22:00, mass transport seems to be prevailed to the southeast. In particular, as the sudden turbulence due to the irregular topography existed was anticipated, we had carried out particle tracking experiment. From this experiment, depending on the situation of flow, the initial movement of the particles were directed to the southeast but it turned out moving towards the offshore based on the long term prediction. Through this result, it is considered that the scope of the search operation should be expanded towards the open sea.

  • The purpose of this study is investigate to water quality, pH, turbidity, salinity, nutrients, SS, DO, COD, ${NH_4}^+$-N, ${NO_2}^-+{NO_3}^-$-N, TN, TP, ${PO_4}^{3-}$-P in ditches and seawater of the Hwawon, southwestern coastal area of Korea. Two stations of the ditch, one station at outfall from reservoir of the coastal development and 15 stations of seawater were measured in August just after a 96.5 mm rainfall and in dry season of November 2006. The sampling time were divided into a rainy and dry season based on turbidity, SS, salinity and nutrients difference of distributions that was evidence as a inflow of pollutants from the developing coastal land area. The pH, turbidity, salinity and SS were high and showed different from between surface and bottom in near the developing of coastal land than the other stations after a strong rainfall over 90 mm while it were not varied in vertical and horizontal concentration profile in dry season. The other nutrients were showed the same concentrations gradient patterns. In opposition to expectations, the SS in dry season was higher than in the rainy season due to upwelling by the wind and strong current. It appears that the researched coastal seawater qualities were mainly effected by the inflow of freshwater from the ditches and drain from the reservoir of the developing land area during strong rainfall while the seawater qualities were mainly effected by the wind and strong current in dry season.

  • The characteristics and fluctuations of structures and spatial distributions of warm eddies (anticyclonic eddies) in the southwestern part of the East Sea (the Japan Sea) are discussed based on the data gathered y the Fisheries Research and Development Agency, Korea from 1967 to 1968. The warm eddies existed very often in the southwest of the Ullung Island. The warm eddies are elliptical in shape and the mean size is about 130 km in diameter. Bimonthly distributions of warm eddies, the largest value of observed frequency and diameter in August and the least in June, indicate that the generation of the warm eddy is related with the development of the East Korean Warm Current. The warm eddies move west, north or southward with 0.80∼2.50 cm/sec or stay over a few months at the same place southwest of the Ullung Island. Movement of warm eddies may be influenced by the neighboring currents, the Rossby wave and the topography. The relationship between the position of warm eddies and the bottom topography suggests that the development and the movement of warm eddies are controlled by the Ullung Basin. The warm eddies should be divided into two groups. One group is the shallow warm eddy with strong baroclinic characteristics and the other is the deep one with strong Barotropic characteristics. The shallow group seems to be closely related with positive values (in summer) of the sea level difference between Pusan and Mozi (the Tsushima Current), while the deep group has no relation with that.
