  • Production and properties of metal matrix composites reinforced with an in-situ high aspect ratio $AlB_2$ flake have been investigated. Boron 2.2wt.% was dissolved in pure Al and Al-Cu alloy at $1300^{\circ}C$ by adding directly boron oxide which resulted in 4 vol.% reinforcing phase. The in-situ $AlB_2$ flake concentration was increased up to 30 vol.% in order to increase the tensile strength of the composites. Hardness, compressive strength and tensile strength of the composite were measured and compared with their matrix. Results showed that 30 vol.% $AlB_2/Al$ composite show a 193% increase in the compressive strength and a 322% increase in compressive yield strength. Results also showed that ductility of composites decreases with adding $AlB_2$ reinforcements.

  • Boriding is one of the chemical method to increase surface hardness as well as carburizing, and nitriding. Gas boriding and boron paste boriding methods were investigated to replace salt bath boriding. Boron paste boriding method is selected due to safety, small waste and low cost. And then boriding is also carried out micro-pulsed PECVD in order to increase efficiency of boriding. Mechanical properties, microstructure, surface concentration, and depth profile of borided layer is investigated by micro-vickers hardness tester, SEM, XRD, and AES.

  • In this study, the effect of coating thickness($20{\mu}m$ and $30{\mu}m$) on microstructure and tensile properties in Yb:YAG disk laser welds of Al-Si-coated boron steel (1.2mmt) was investigated. In the case of as welds, the quantity of ferrite was found to be higher in base metal than that in HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) and fusion zone, indicating, fracture occurrs in base metal, and the fracture position is unrelated to the coating thickness. Furthermore, yield strength, tensile strength of base metal and welded specimens showed similar behavior whereas elongation was decreased. On the other hand, base metal and HAZ showed existence of martensite after heat treatment, the fusion zone indicated the presence of full ferrite or austenite and ferrite during heat treatment ($900^{\circ}C$, 5min), After water cooling, austenite was transformed to martensite, and the quantity of ferrite in fusion zone was higher as compared with in base metal, resulting in sharply decrease of yield strength, tensile strength and elongation, which leads to fracture occured at fusion zone. In particular, results showed that because the concentration of Al was higher in 30um coating layer specimen than that of 20um coating specimen, after heat treatment, producing a higher quantity of ferrite was higher after heat treatment in the fusion zone; howevers, it leads to a lower tensile property.

  • Increasing the fuel economy has been an inevitable issue for the development of new cars, and one of the important measures to improve the fuel economy is to decrease the vehicle weight. In order to obtain this goal, the researches about lighter, stronger and the well impact absorbing bumper impact beam have been studied without sacrificing bumper safety. In this study, the overall weight reduction possibility of rear bumper impact beam could be examined based on the variation of frontal, offset and corner impact crash capability by substituting a ultra high strength steel material (boron steel ) having tensile strength of 1.5 GPa grade instead of conventional steels. In addition, the section variations (open section, closed section, open section with 5 stays) of the bumper impact beam structure were examined carefully. It could be reached that this analysis could be well established and be contributed for design guide and the optimum design conditions of the automotive rear bumper impact beam development.

  • With light vehicle weight gradually becoming ever more importance due to tightened exhaust gas regulations, hot-stamping processing using boron alloyed steel is being applied more and more by major automobile OEMs since process assures both moldability and a high strength of 1.5 GPa. Although laser trimming is generally applied to the post-processing of the hot-stamped process with high strength, there have been many studies of in-die hot trimming using shear dies during the quenching of material in order to shorten processing times. As such, this study investigated the effects of the Shear rate and Shear mechanism on shear processes during the quenching process of hot-stamping material. In case of pad variable, padding force is very weak compared with shear force, so it does not affect the shear surface. In case of shear rate, the higher the shear at high temperatures and the higher the friction effect. As a result the rollover and the fracture distribution decreased, and the burnish distribution increased. Therefore, it is considered that the shear quality is guaranteed when high shear rate is applied in high temperature shear process.

  • Hot press forming allows geometrically complicated parts to be formed from sheet and the rapid cooling hardens them to extremely high strength. The main purpose of this research is to characterize Al coated layer in Al coated boron steel during hot press forming. For the hot press hardening experiment, test specimens were heated up to $810{\sim}930^{\circ}C$ and held for 3, 6 and 9 minutes, respectively. And then, some specimens were press hardened and others were air-cooled without any pressing for the comparison purpose. Al coated layer shows four distinct micro-structural regions of interest; diffusion zone, Al-Fe zone(I) low-Al zone(LAZ) and Al-Fe zone(II). Band-like LAZ is clearly shown at temperature ranges of $810{\sim}870^{\circ}C$ and sparsely dispersed at temperature higher than 900oC. The micro-cracking behavior in the Al coated layer during forming were also analyzed by bending and deep drawing tests. The strain concentration in softer LAZ is found to be closely related with micro-cracking and exfoliation in coated layer during forming.

  • In this study, we investigate the tribological behavior of AISI 304 stainless steel pairs under deionized water and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) water dispersion lubrication. The specimen friction and wear properties are evaluated using a reciprocating ball-on-flat tribometer. The coefficient of friction remains nearly constant throughout the test under both lubricant conditions. The wear depth of the specimens under h-BN lubrication is smaller than that under deionized water lubrication, indicating the inhibition behavior of h-BN nanolubricants on direct metal-metal contacts. Optical micrographs and stylus profilometer measurements are performed to evaluate the severity of damage caused by the sliding motion and to determine the wear morphology of the specimens, respectively. The results show that h-BN nanolubricants does not have a significant effect on the friction behavior but demonstrates reduced wear owing to their trapping effect between the sliding interfaces. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy images of the specimens were acquired to confirm the trapping effect of h-BN between the sliding interfaces. The results also suggest that the trapped lubricants can distribute the contact pressure, reducing the wear damage caused by the metal-metal contact at the interface. In conclusion, h-BN nanolubricants have potential as an anti-wear additive for lubrication applications. Further investigation is needed to provide direct evidence of the trapping effect of h-BN nanoparticles between the sliding interfaces. These findings could lead to the development of more efficient and effective lubricants for various industrial applications.

  • To understand the eutectic reaction mechanism and the relocation behavior of the core debris is indispensable for the safety assessment of core disruptive accidents (CDAs) in sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). This paper addresses reaction products and their distribution of the eutectic melting/solidifying reaction of boron carbide (B4C) and stainless-steel (SS). The influence of the existence of carbon on the B4C-SS eutectic reaction was investigated by comparing the iron boride (FeB)-SS reaction by Raman spectroscopy with Multivariate Curve Resolution (MCR) analysis. The scanning electron microscopy with dispersive X-ray spectrometer was also used to investigate the elemental information of the pure metals such as Cr, Ni, and Fe. In the B4C-SS samples, a new layer was formed between B4C/SS interface, and the layer was confirmed that the formed layer corresponded to amorphous carbon (graphite) or FeB or Fe2B. In contrast, a new layer was not clearly formed between FeB and SS interface in the FeB-SS samples. All samples observed the Cr-rich domain and Fe and Ni-rich domain after the reaction. These domains might be formed during the solidifying process.
