  • A recursive parameter estimation method is applied to spindle deflection model during boring process. The spindle infeed rate is then determined to preserve the diametral tolerance of bore. This estimation method is further extended to adaptive control by application of the variance perturbation method. The results of computer simulation attest that the proposed method renders the optimal cutting conditions, maintaining the diametral accuracy of bore, regardless of parameter fluctuations. The proposed method necessitating only post-process measurements features that initialization of parameter guess values in simple, a priori knowledge on parameter variations is not needed and the accurate estimation of optimal spindle infeed rate is obtained, even if the parameter estimation may be poor.

  • Several prediction model of penetration rate (PR) of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been focused on applying to design stage. In construction stage, however, the expected PR and its trends are changed during tunneling owing to TBM excavation skills and the gap between the investigated and actual geological conditions. Monitoring the PR during tunneling is crucial to rescheduling the excavation plan in real-time. This study proposes a sequential prediction method applicable in the construction stage. Geological and TBM operating data are collected from Gunpo cable tunnel in Korea, and preprocessed through normalization and augmentation. The results show that the sequential prediction for 1 ring unit prediction distance (UPD) is R2≥0.79; whereas, a one-step prediction is R2≤0.30. In modeling algorithm, a gradient boosted regression tree (GBRT) outperformed a least square-based linear regression in sequential prediction method. For practical use, a simple equation between the R2 and UPD is proposed. When UPD increases R2 decreases exponentially; In particular, UPD at R2=0.60 is calculated as 28 rings using the equation. Such a time interval will provide enough time for decision-making. Evidently, the UPD can be adjusted depending on other project and the R2 value targeted by an operator. Therefore, a calculation process for the equation between the R2 and UPD is addressed.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of early revegetation by analyzing the characteristics of germination and growth of Lespedeza cyrtobotrya using boring technique in rock slopes. After making up a growing basis of approximately 20 cm depth and 10 cm diameter by using a boring machine, the surface of rock slopes was planted with vegetation-plant. The number of germinating populations by soil media was 23 in H.s, 22 in T.s, 12 in M.s, and 1 in M.g.s. The germination rate (%) by soil media was 19.2% in H.s, 18.3% in T.s, 10.0% in M.s and 0.8% in M.g.s. In monthly changes of growth rate, the aspect was northwest direction, the soil media was M.s, and the treatment was microorganism plot. The main factors affecting survivorship and growth of population were soil media and treatment plot. The interaction between each factor had a good effects in bearing ${\times}$ soil media, bearing ${\times}$ treatment plot, soil media ${\times}$ treatment plot. but, it is recommended that the mulching of vegetation plant is highly needed to help the germination of seed and growth of vegetation because of loss of seed and soil media occurred due to rainfall. Therefore, The result suggests that the revegetation technique using boring in rock slope was very efficient in respect of the early revegetation and the landscape.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the roundness of CNC turning so that helps the operator to choose the right turning conditions to produce a product with the given parameters. This paper focuses on determining the optimal levels of machining factors for circular shaft with CNC turning. For this purpose, the optimization of factors is performed based on experimental design method. A design and analysis of experiments are conducted to study the effects of these factors on the roundness by using the SIN ratio, analysis of ANOVA, and F-test. Factors, namely, fixed pressure, wall thickness, depth of cut, and feed rate are optimized with consideration of the roundness. The boring tool used in this study is a tungsten carbide coated. The material of workpiece is Al6061 and the machining method is dry cutting.

  • This paper aims to show how to use several Machine Learning (ML) methods to estimate the TBM penetration rate systematically (TBM-PR). To this end, 1125 datasets including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), punch slope index (PSI), distance between the planes of weakness (DPW), orientation of discontinuities (alpha angle-α), rock fracture class (RFC), and actual/measured TBM-PRs were established. To evaluate the ML methods' ability to perform, the 5-fold cross-validation was taken into consideration. Eventually, comparing the ML outcomes and the TBM monitoring data indicated that the ML methods have a very good potential ability in the prediction of TBM-PR. However, the long short-term memory model with a correlation coefficient of 0.9932 and a route mean square error of 2.68E-6 outperformed the remaining six ML algorithms. The backward selection method showed that PSI and RFC were more and less significant parameters on the TBM-PR compared to the others.

  • Recently, the Shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) construction method is used gradually to increase at the Tunnel Constructin site. However the design and application of the Shield TBM were carried out without sufficient investigation of the ground conditions in the construction site. Due to insufficient understanding to the corresponding equipment is frequently occurring unexpected construction cost and extension of a construction period. The most suitable alternative construction method was determined by analyzing tunneling rate, duration, construction cost of shield machine and tunneling data of alternative method. The result of the case study is suggested as follows. First, the accurate soil exploration on the construction site should be preceded to prevent from tunneling stoppage and schedule delay. Second, the most suitable selection of the shield machine to the ground conditions of the construction site should be executed based on the investigation. Third, the best alternative method for boring of hard rock section is 'hard rock blasting after open cut and cover method'.

  • The strain holding test(SHT) or the sell-boring pressuremeter test(SBPT) has been effectively utilized to determine the horizontal coefficient of consolidation$(c_h)$ of clayey soils. However, a commonly used procedure proposed by Clarke et al.(1979) can lead to an erroneous estimation of $(c_h)$ because of its simplified assumptions. This paper deals with numerical analyses based on realistic test conditions of the generally accepted testing procedure, and .using the most commonly used type of pressuremeter. The effects of pressuremeter geometry, partial drainage during cavity expansion, and the cavity strain level for the holding test are investigated with the radial distributions of the initial excess pore pressure and their dissipation rate. Based on the results of the numerical analyses, the curve of the time factor for the 50% degree of consolidation($T_{50}$) needed to estimate $(c_h)$ is proposed. Comparisons are made between $(c_h)$ values estimated from the SHT or the SBPT and those obtained from other in situ and laboratory tests performed at two sites in Korea. These results suggest the improved capability of the $T_{50}$ curve proposed herein.

  • TBM penetration rate is a function of intact rock properties, rock mass conditions and TBM operational parameters. Machine rate of penetrationcan be predicted by knowledge of the ground conditions and its effects on machine performance. The variation of TBM operational parameters such as penetration rate and thrust plays an important role in its performance. This study presents the results of the analysis on the TBM penetration rates in schistose rock types present along the alignment of Golab tunnel based on the analysis of a TBM performance database established for every stroke through different schistose rock types. The results of the analysis are compared to the results of some empirical and theoretical predictive models such as NTH and QTBM. Additional analysis was performed to find the optimum thrust and revolution per minute values for different schistose rock types.

  • For the purpose of research study, a vertical shaft of 98m in length and 3.05m in diameter was constructed in the layer of conglomerate by using the Raise Boring Machine (RBM). In order to estimate the net penetration rate of the RBM, which can be used in the stage of design, the in-situ test results were analysed and correlated to data from the boring log in situ and laboratory testing. Its average net penetration rate is 2.233mm/rev while its average advance rate is 0.382m/hr, which is lower than that of TBM(Tunnel Boving Machine). It turns out that the net penetration rate increases with the increase of strength characteristics in rock mass (e.g., uniaxial compression strength, tensile strength, etc.). Similarly, the net penetration rate increases linearly with the hardness of rock mass. These results are contrary to the results of the previous construction sites where the TBM was generally used in the layer of hard rock. However, the trend obtained in this study is in accordance with the findings of Barton suggesting the relationship between Q$_TBM$ and penetration rate in the layer of soft rock. Thus, the trend is valid in soft and/or weathered rocks.
