  • In solid rockets, a pintle thruster is a modulatable thrust device which controlls nozzle throat area. In this study, effect of bore on aerodynamic loads in a SNECMA modulatable thruster was carried out. Existence of bore resulted in reduced aerodynamic load.

  • A bore is a transition between different uniform flows of water. If a long wave of elevation travels in shallow water it steepens and forms a bore. The bore is undular if the change in surface elevation of the wave is less than 0.28 of the original depth of water. This paper describes the growth of an undular bore from a long wave which forms a gentle transition between a uniform flow and still water. A physical account of its development is followed by the results of numerical calculations. Finite-difference approximations are used in the partial differential equations of motion. For undular bores, numerical calculations show that (i) the relationship between relative elevation and relative velocity given by long wave theory is approached for an undular bore, (ii) the amplitude of first crest of an undular bore approaches a finite limit approximately at an exponential rate, and (iii) the distance between the first two crests increases without bound, approximately logarithmically.

  • Bore evacuator which have circular structure of cylindrical form is located at tube, and its function is to evacuate toxic gases generated during firing intervals. Between bore evacuator and bore interior, gas flow field is developed through the nozzles, and the charging and discharging process is formed. By these flow cycle(charging and discharging) the evacuation effect can be generated. This report contains an analyses and results consideration about bore evacuator flowfield.

  • This paper is launched to get an exact bore-sighting value in the process of assembling for a dual-barrel weapon. Image processing method with a CCD(Charged Coupled Device) camera is chosen for the error reduction of bore-sighting. The results of this method by using a CCD camera and the testing target method are described in this paper. After the performance of the dual-barrel weapon and that of the fire-control system in the dual barrel weapon system is confirmed, the bore-sighting which is a part of the process in the system assembly is accomplished. In this process, the position of the barrel is identified by using the testing target method that is an existing bore-sighting method. Then, the fixing line of the fire-control system is checked by a day-optical part. The precision of the bore-sighting is required within several mils, however the manual method using the naked eyes makes it worse. Therefore, a CCD camera is installed in the eyepieces. Next, we can get an image of the sighting and the center coordinate values of the laser-pointer from each barrel by image processing method. A required bore-sighting value is calculated from the eccentricity of the center coordinate. Finally, It can be applied to adopt this result in the assembling process of the dual-barrel weapon.

A Study on Engine Oil Consumption Considering Wear of Piston-Ring and Cylinder Bore (피스톤-링 및 실린더 보아 마모를 고려한 엔진오일소모 연구)

  • Ring and cylinder bore wear may not be a problem in most current automotive engines. However, a small change in ring face and cylinder bore diameter can significantly affect the lubrication characteristics and ring axial motion. This in turn can cause to change inter-ring pressure, blow-by and oil consumption in an engine. Therefore, by predicting the wear of piston ring face and cylinder bore altogether, the changed ring end gap and the changed volume of gas reservoir can be calculated. Then the excessive oil consumption can be predicted. Here, the oil amount through top ring gap into combustion chamber is estimated as engine oil consumption. Furthermore, the wear theories of ring and cylinder bore are included. The changed oil consumption caused by the new end gap and the new volume of oil reservoir around second land, can be calculated at some engine running interval. Meanwhile, the wear amount and oil consumption occurred during engine durability cycle are compared with the calculated values. The wear data of rings and cylinder bore are obtained from three engines after engine durability test. The calculated wear data of each part are turn out to be around the band of averaged test values or a little below. It is shown that the important factor regarding oil consumption increasement is the wear of ring face.

  • A 3-dimensional stress measurement system based on the bore hole bottom deformation method, which is one of the stress relief methods, was developed. A pilot bore hole is drilled from the bottom of a bore hole and the stress meter is inserted into the pilot bore hole in the method. The bore hole is advanced as an over coring and the deformations in seven directions are measured by cantilever type-sensors. Using the cantilever type-sensors saves time for hardening of glue. No cable connection between the stress meter and a data logger is necessary since a compact data logger is installed in the stress meter. The accuracy of the stress meter was confirmed by a biaxial test for a Shikotsu welded tuff block although in-situ tests have not been carried out yet.

  • This study is a research on Dual Bore heat pipe to investigate the ability of heat transport ability, heat resistance and difference of heat transport ability according to the type of heat pipes. As the result of this research, we got several conclusions. Each pipe of Dual Bore in one section has a similar heat transfer capability. In the range between $-20^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ the heat transfer capability is double than single bore which was analyzed by menas of GAP program. Heat resistance is below $0.05^{\circ}C$/W at every point, and it tells aluminum-ammonia heat pipes are proper for satellite.

  • This study investigates the applicability of CADMAS-SURF (Super Roller Flume for Computer Aided Design of a MArtime Structure) code basal on the Navier-Stokes solver to predict bore phenomena. The time variation of ware levels and velocities due to the bore propagation were computed for the different bore strength conditions. In order to verify the numerical results by CADMAS-SURF, laboratory experiments were also performed, using the DPIV and LDV measuring system. The numerical results were compared to the experimental data and the analytical predictions by the NSC method basal on fully nonlinear shallow-water theory by the method of characteristics. It appears that the CADMAS-SURF slightly overestimated the water-surface level measured by the laboratory experiments and its discrepancy becomes prominent as the bore strength increases. The predicted propagation speed for a bore was also slaver than that by the experiment and NSC method. However, the temporal variations in velocities were in relatively good agreement with the experimental data for all cases, except for overshooting and undershooting in the front face of a bore, which may be derived from the numerical instability. Further, CADMAS-SURF successfully simulated the decrease in the water level and velocity caused by the effects of negative waves reflected from the upstream end wall.

A Study on Cylinder Bore Wear during Engine Durability Test (엔진 내구시험 시 실린더 보아의 마모에 관한 연구)

Being based on the calculation of gas flow amount by the theory of piston ring dynamics and gas flow, and the calculation of oil film thickness and friction force by the analysis of piston ring lubrication, the calculation theory of oil amount through top ring gap into combustion chamber will be set. This is estimated as engine oil consumption. Furthermore, the wear theories of ring, groove and cylinder bore are included. Then the each amount of wear is to be obtained. The changed oil consumption caused by the new end gap and the new volume of oil reservoir around second land, can be calculated at some engine running interval. Meanwhile, the wear amount and oil consumption occurred during engine durability cycle are compared with the calculated values. Next, the calculated amount of oil consumption and wear are compared with the guideline of each pare0s wear and oil consumption. So, the timing of part repair and engine life cycle can be predicted in advance without performing engine durability test. The wear data of cylinder bore diameter are obtained from three engines before and after engine durability test. The calculated wear data of cylinder bore diameter are turn out to be twice of the lower bound of averaged test values at TDC and the lower bound at BDC.

Study on the Improved Measurement of Piston Assembly Friction Force in an IDI Diesel Engine (간접 분사식 디젤기관 피스톤 결합체 마찰력 측정 장치의 개선 및 마찰력 측정)

  • Among mechanical friction losses in an engine, the piston assembly and cylinder components accounts for the majority of the losses. The movable bore technique has been developed and turned out to be the most reliable technique in measuring the instantaneous friction of piston assembly. The weakness of this system, however, was the presence of the protruded top of movable bore necessary for pressure balancing. Because of the protruded part the piston could not be taken out without disassembling the crankshaft. Present study was carried out with a system of removable top of the movable bore so that it was possible to make frequent piston removals. The effects from engine speed, oil viscosity, engine load and elastic contact pressure of piston rings on the frictional characteristics have been evaluated with the improved equipment. Also, frictions of each member of piston assembly were measured.
