  • Intermetallic compound matrix composites have been expected to be established as high temperature structural components. $Ni_3Al$ is a representative intermetallic alloy, which has excellent ductility even at room temperature by adding certain alloying elements. $Ni_3Al$ matrix composites with aluminum oxide particles, which are formed by the in-situ reaction between the alloy and aluminum borate whiskers, are fabricated by a powder metallurgical method. The addition of aluminum borate whiskers disperses the synthetic aluminum oxide particles during sintering and dramatically increases the strength of the composite. The uniform dispersion of reaction synthesized aluminum oxide particles and the uniform solution of boron in the matrix seem to play an important role in the improvement in strength. There is a dramatic increase in strength with the addition of the whisker, and the maximum value is obtained at a 10 vol% addition of whisker. The $Ni_3Al$ composite with 10 vol% aluminum oxide particles $0.3{\mu}m$ in size and with 0.1 wt% boron powder fabricated by the conventional powder metallurgical process does not have such high strength because of inhomogeneous distribution of aluminum oxide particles and of boron. The tensile strength of the $Ni_3Al$ with a 10 vol% aluminum borate whisker reaches more than twice the value, 930 MPa, of the parent alloy. No third phase is observed between the aluminum oxide and the matrix.

  • We have investigated the electronic properties of the oxide film and anodic oxidation mechanism. Iron was oxidized by two reaction pathways depending on pH. The oxide film has showed the electronic properties of n-type semiconductor based on the Mott-Schottky equation.

  • Inhibitive effects of chromate, phosphate, sulfate, and borate on chloride pitting corrosion of Al have been investigated using cyclic voltammetry. During the anodic oxide growth, the critical concentration of chloride for pit initiation decreased in the order: chromate > phosphate > sulfate > borate, and the maximum pitting current density increases in the reverse order: chromate < phosphate < sulfate < borate. The decreasing pitting current density was observed in the successive polarization cycles, which was attributed to the aging of Al oxides and field relaxation at oxide/solution interface.

  • We have investigated the growth kinetics and electronic properties of passive film of zinc in borate buffer solution. The oxide film formed in passivation process of zinc has showed the electronic properties of n-type semiconductor based on the Mott-Schottky equation. And it was found out that the oxide film consisted ZnO and $Zn(OH)_2$ was composed of deep and shallow donors.

  • In the present study, six silicone rubber doped by tellurium borate oxides were fabricated using the casting method. The densities of the fabricated silicon rubber-doped by tellurium borate oxides samples were measured using the Archimedes Method. Moreover, the linear attenuation coefficient of silicone rubber doped tellurium borate oxides samples was evaluated experimentally using the hyper pure germanium, and the recorded linear attenuation coefficient values were affirmed using the theoretical Phy-X program. The experimental measurements were performed using the narrow beam transmission method with radioactive isotopes Am-241, Cs-137, and Co-60 with energies of 59, 661, 1173, and 1332 keV. The linear attenuation coefficient values showed an enhancement by 4.73 times, 1.20 time, 1.17, time, and 1.17 time, respectively at gamma photon energies of 59, 661, 1173, and 1332 keV, when the TeO2 concentration increased in the fabricated composites from 0 to 50 wt%. The enhancement of the linear attenuation coefficient values has a positive effect on the transmission rate values where the half-value thickness and transmission rate were decreased accompanied by an increase in the RPE.

  • The electrochemical corrosion and passivation of Ni rotating disk electrod in borate buffer solution was studied with potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The mechanisms of both the active dissolution and passivation of nickel and the hydrogen evolution in reduction reaction were hypothetically established while utilizing the Tafel slope, impedance data, the rotation speed of Ni-RDE and the pH dependence of corrosion potential and current. Based on the EIS data, an equivalent circuit was suggested. In addition, carefully measured were the electrochemical parameters for specific anodic dissolution regions. It can be concluded from the data collected that the $Ni(OH)_2$ oxide film, which is primarily formed by passivation, is converted to NiO by dehydration under the influence of an electrical field.

  • Sodium zinc borate glasses doped with dysprosium and modified with different concentrations of barium oxide (0-50 mol %) were fabricated using the melting quenching technique. The structural properties of the prepared glass systems were characterized using XRD and FTIR methods. The absorption spectra of the prepared glasses were measured to determine their energy gap and their related optical properties. The density of the glasses and other physical parameters were also reported. Additionally, with the help of Photon Shielding and Dosimetry (PSD) software, we investigated the radiation shielding parameters of the prepared glass systems at different energy values. It was found that an increase in the density of the glasses by increasing the concentration of BaO significantly improved the gamma ray shielding ability of the samples. For practical results, a compatible irradiation set up was designed to check the shielding capability of the obtained glasses using a gamma ray source at 662 keV. The experimentally obtained results strongly agreed with the data obtained by PDS software at the same energy. These results demonstrated that the investigated glass system is a good candidate for several radiation shielding applications when comparing it with other commercial shielding glasses and concretes.

  • Using potentiodynamic and linear polarization method, the atmospheric effect on the corrosion of iron in borate buffer solution was investigated. The corrosion of iron was heavily influenced by the degree of oxygen concentration. The supply of reduction current was increased by the reduction of dissolved oxygen, and the corrosion potential of iron was shifted to the positive side. The $OH^-$ ion, which was produced through the reduction of either water or oxygen, significantly increased the $OH^-$ ion concentration inside of the electrical double layers of iron electrode, and facilitated the adsorption of $OH^-$ ion on the surface of the iron electrode. The adsorption of $OH^-$ ion on the iron electrode can be explained either by Langmuir isotherm or by Temkin logarithmic isotherm.
