  • Evaporation characteristics of single butanol gel fuel were investigated in different mass ratios of gellant and ambient temperatures. Gel fuel was made by adding the pure water and hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC) into the 1-butanol. Increase of viscosity was observed when the loading of HPMC increased. The evaporation process of gel droplet could be divided into three stages: droplet heating, micro-explosion and crust formation. Elevation of ambient temperature helped boost the evaporation in all experimental cases, but the effect was mitigated when the mass ratio of HPMC increased. Increase of HPMC weight ratio reduced the evaporation rate.

  • In this research, numerical analysis was performed to determine the effects of hydrogen on biogas combustion for homogeneous charged compression ignition (HCCI) engines. The target engine specifications were a 2300cc displacement volume, 13:1 compression ratio, 15kW of electricity, and 1.2 bar boost pressure. The engine speed was fixed to 1800rpm. By varying the excess air ratio and hydrogen contents, the cylinder pressure, nitric oxide, and carbon dioxide were measured as a function of the hydrogen contents. According to preliminary studies related to the reaction mechanism for methane combustion and oxidation, a GRI 3.0 mechanism as the base mechanism was selected for HCCI combustion calculations describing the detailed reaction mechanism. By adding hydrogen, NO was increased while $CO_2$ was decreased. The cylinder pressure was also increased, having advanced timing for the maximum cylinder pressure and pressure rise region. Furthermore, lean operation limits were extended by adding hydrogen to the HCCI engine.

  • Lean combustion was applied to improve the thermal efficiency and emission in a single-cylinder, spark-ignition engine fueled with syngas. Under naturally aspirated conditions, the lean combustion significantly improved the thermal efficiency compared to the stoichiometric combustion, mainly due to the reduction in heat transfer loss. Intake air boost was applied to compensate the low power output of the lean combustion. The gross indicated power of 24.8 kW was achieved by increasing the intake pressure up to 1.6 bar at excess air ratio of 2.2. The nitrogen oxides showed near zero level, but the carbon monoxide emission was significant.

  • A HIL(hardware-in-the-loop) system was established and the simulation was carried out to determine whether the system operates normally. The system consists of turbocharger test bench, HIL platform with real time S/W and DAQ, and engine model using Matlab/Simulink. In the simulation the supplied fuel rate is changed step-by-step from 1.8944 kg/h to 4.7360 kg/h. The change of air-fuel ratio is analyzed and observed whether the air-fuel ratio follow the target air-fuel ratio 32. When the supplied fuel rate is changed, the air-fuel ratio is converged to the target air-fuel ratio after about 20 seconds. And the vane duty ratio of turbine and the boost pressure of compressor are also changed properly. Therefore this HIL system can be used to develop the new turbocharger and improve the performance of the modified turbocharger.

  • It has recently been reported that methanol fuel has been used in the product carrier with established duel fuel engine, which has been greatly reducing emissions of $CO_2$, NOx and SOx from the engine. However, to use methanol alone as fuel oil in a general diesel engine, design modification of cylinder head is needed because the ignition aid device or the duel fuel injection system is needed. On the other hand, only if the mixer is installed on the fuel oil supply line, diesel oil - methanol blending oil can be used as fuel oil for the diesel engine, but there is a problem of the phase separation when two fuels are mixed. In this study, diesel oil and methanol were blended compulsorily in preventing the phase separation with installing agitators and a fuel oil boost pump on fuel line of a test engine. Also, cylinder pressure and fuel consumption quantity were measured according to engine load and methanol blending ratio, and indicated mean effective pressure, heat release rate and combustion temperature obtained from the single zone combustion model were analyzed to investigate the effects of latent heat of vaporization of methanol on combustion stability and characteristics. As a result, the combustion stability and characteristics of 10% methanol blending oil are closest to the those of diesel oil, and it could be used as fuel oil in existing diesel engines without deterioration of engine performance and combustion characteristics.

  • Purpose Renin is a proteolytic enzyme synthesized and secreted from epidermal(juxtaglomerular) cells in kidney. Renin acts on the renin substrate angiotensinogen to produce angiotensin I, and then angiotensin II is produced by the action of angiotensin converting enzyme. This causes the adrenal glands to boost blood pressure (vasoconstriction) and promote aldosterone secretion. While Plasma renin activity (PRA) is to test angiotensin I, the active renin concentration (ARC) is a renin test directly. They have different test methods and their own substrates. However, these two methods are sometimes interpreted as the same as a result. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the ARC test by comparing the results between PRA and ARC. Materials and Methods For the diversity of the experiment, 26 samples were requested to test with PRA(TFB company) and ARC(Cisbio company) to other institution. We compared and analyzed PRA(Immunotech company) and ARC(Cisbio company) tests using 28 samples from September $15^{th}$ to October $13^{th}$ in 2017. The statistical analysis method for PRA/ARC evaluated the usefulness using Microsoft Excel program by verifying a correlation analysis of Aldosterone/PRA ratio and a correlation analysis of Aldosterone/ARC ratio and conducting T-test. Results The regression equation of the PRA(Immunotech company)/ARC(Cisbio company), which was tested in the department, was y = 0.0619x + 0.4615 and the correlation coefficient was 0.73. The regression equation of the PRA(TFB company)/ARC(Cisbio company), which was tested in the other institution, was y = 0.0888x + 0.3316 and the correlation coefficient was 0.91. In addition, The regression equation of Aldosterone / PRA ratio and Aldosterone / ARC ratio was y = 0.875x - 11.688 and the correlation coefficient was 0.87. Plus T - test showed no significant difference (P>0.05). Conclusion Both tests showed a strong positive correlation, but this only represents the strength and direction of the relationship between the two tests. Furthermore, the actual results showed somewhat differences. It is presumed that the measured value was influenced by the endogenous renin group mass in the plasma, the condition of the enzyme reaction and the kind of the inhibitor. When the active renin concentration (ARC) test is performed, it is useful to distinguish between the two tests as they are complementary.

  • This paper presents a feedforward control algorithm for the EGR and VGT systems of passenger car diesel engines. The air-to-fuel ratio and boost pressure are selected as control indicators and the positions of EGR valve and VGT vane are used as control inputs of the EGR and VGT controller. In order to compensate the non-linearity and coupled dynamics of the EGR and VGT systems, we have proposed a non-linear model-based feedforward control algorithm which is obtained from static model inversion approach. It is observed that the average modeling errors of the feedforward algorithm is about 2% using stationary engine experiment data of 225 operating conditions. Using a feedback controller including proportional-integral, the modeling error is compensated. Furthermore, it is validated that the proposed feedforward algorithm generates physically acceptable trajectories of the actuator and successfully tracks the desired values through engine experiments.

  • A 3-tonf class liquid rocket engine that powers the upper stage of a small launcher and lifts 500 kg payload to 500 km SSO is designed. The small launcher is to utilize the flight-proven technology of the 75-tonf class engine for the first stage. A combination of liquid oxygen and liquid methane has been selected as their cryogenic states can provide an extra boost in specific impulse as well as enable a weight saving via the common dome arrangement. An expander cycle is chosen among others as the low-pressure operation makes it robust and reliable while a specific impulse of over 360 seconds is achievable with the nozzle extension ratio of 120. Key components such as combustion chamber and turbopump are designed for additive manufacturing to a target cost. The engine system provides an evaporated methane for the autogenous pressurization system and the reaction control of the stage. This upper stage propulsion system can be extended to various missions including deep space exploration.

  • Purpose : To conduct a nationwide survey on the principals in radiotherapy for rectal cancer, and produce a database of Korean Patterns of Care Study. Materials and Methods : We developed web-based Patterns of Care Study system and a national survey was conducted using random sampling based on power allocation methods. Eligible patients were who had postoperative radiotherapy for rectal cancer without gross residual tumor after surgical resection and without previous history of other cancer and radiotherapy to pelvis. Data of patients were Inputted to the web based PCS system by each investigators in 19 institutions. Results : Informations on 309 patients with rectal cancer who received radiotherapy between 1998 and 1999 were collected. Male to female ratio was 59 : 41, and the most common location of tumor was lower rectum ($46\%$). Preoperative CEA was checked in $79\%$ of cases and its value was higher than 6 ng/ml in $32\%$. Pathologic stage were I in $1.5\%$, II in $32\%$, III in $53\%$, and IV in $1.6\%$. Low anterior resection was the most common type of surgery and complete resection was peformed in $95\%$ of cases. Distal resection margin was less than 2 cm in $30\%$, and number of lymph node dissected was less than 12 in $31\%$. Chemotherapy was peformed in $91\%$ and most common regimen was 5-FU and leucovorine ($59\%$). The most common type of field arrangement used for the initial pelvic field was the four field box (Posterior-Right-Left) technique ($65.0\%$), and there was no AP-PA parallel opposing field used. Patient position was prone in $81.2\%$, and the boost field was used in $61.8\%$. To displace bowel outward, pressure modulating devices or bladder filling was used in $40.1\%$. Radiation dose was prescribed to isocenter in $45.3\%$ and to isodose line in 123 cases ($39.8\%$). Percent delivered dose over $90\%$ was achieved in $92.9\%$. Conclusion : We could find the Patterns of Care for the radiotherapy in Korean rectal cancer patients was similar to that of US national survey. The type of surgery and the regimen of chemotherapy were variable according to institutions and the variations of radiation dose and field arrangement were within acceptable range.
