These block books were officially released by government authorities while various reprints and copies were utilized by civilians. Also, Dongeuibogam was published several times for use in Japan and China. The National Library of Korea utilizes Dongeuibogam in a total of 401 types including 248 general books, 104 academic papers, 32 non-books and 17 old books. This can be classified by theme into 235 general theories, 23 medicinal prescriptions, 24 preservations and 13 drugs. Although the key to traditional medicine lies in its many years of experience, it is important to absorb the technical aspects of western medicine instead of relying on past experience alone.

  • This analysis of the portrayal of characters in 74 picture books used in kindergarten focused on the gender types and roles of girls and boys, adult females, adult males, and feminist perspectives or sexism. Results showed that girls were rewarded according to their abilities and accomplishments, and they were considered to have equal rights; boys were depicted as dominant, positive, logical, courageous and having initiative; adult females, especially mothers at home, were responsible exclusively for housekeeping and child rearing; adult males, including fathers, were depicted as dominant characters in a variety of professional occupations and social activities, nonetheless, in many books, children were depicted as androgynous personalities having human rights. Though these results show changes in gender stereotypes from the 1970s and 1980s, subtle biases of gender still remain in children's books.

The 52 subjects attending a kindergarten in Kwangju were randomly assigned to an experimental group or a control group of 26 children each. The experimental group made stories with wordless picture books while the control group listened to stories. Experimental treatments were given twice a week for 6 weeks. Assessment was by The Language Comprehension-Cognition Test(1994), The Picture Vocabulary Test(1995), and The Sentence-Comprehension Test(1996). Qualitative level of the stories was analyzed by Morrow's(1985) revised Instrument Assessing Children Understanding of Stories(Chae, 1996). The vocabulary, language-comprehension, and story-composing ability of children who made stories with wordless picture books were higher than those of children who listened to stories told by teachers.
