성장기 암컷 쥐에서 Arginine 첨가가 골밀도에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Arginine Supplementation on Bone Mineral Density in Growing Female Rats)

  • The aim of this study was to define an arginine effect when added to a diet. The influence of arginine supplements on bone mineral density and content were studied in young female Sprague-Dawley rats fed either an arginine supplemented diet or control diet. Twenty four rats (body weight $83{\pm}5g$) were randomly assigned to one of two groups, consuming casein or casein with supplemented arginine diet. All rats were fed on experimental diet and deionized water ad libitum for 9 weeks. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) were measured using PIXImus (GE Lunar Co, Wisconsin, USA) in spine and femur 3, 6, and 9 weeks after feeding. The serum and urine concentrations of Ca and P were determined. Diet did not affect weight gain and mean food intake. The serum concentration of Ca and P were not changed by arginine supplementation. Urinary Ca excretion was significantly decreased by arginine supplementation. Spine BMD was significantly increased by arginine supplementation on 3 and 6 weeks after feeding. Femur BMD was significantly increased in the group of arginine supplementation on 3, 6, and 9 weeks. Rats fed the arginine-supplemented diet had better bone mineral content than did control diet rats in the experimental period. Therefore, arginine supplementation may be beneficial on spine and femur BMD increment in growing female rats. These are thought to be associated with an arginine-induced growth hormone release. The exact mechanism of this effect remains to be elucidated.

잉어사료에 있어서 피혁분과 육골분의 어분대체원으로서의 평가 (Evaluation of Leather Meal and Meat and Bone Meal as the Fish Meal Replacer in Israeli Carp Diets)

  • 본 연구는 잉어 사료의 어분 대체사료원으로서 피혁분과 육골분의 이용 가능성과 어분단백질 대체 범위를 결정하고 잉어용 어분대체품 개발의 기초자료를 제공하고자 실시되었다. 본 실험사료의 단백질원으로 동물성으로는 북양어분(White Fish Meal, WFM), 피혁분(Leather Meal, LM), 육골분(Meat & Bone Meal, MBM)을 식물성으로는 대두박(Soybean Meal, SM), 콘글루텐밀(Corn Gluten Meal, CGM)을 사용하였고, 조단백질 함량은 39.5%, 가용성 에너지는 15.3 KJ/g으로 동일하게 맞추었고, 실험사료내의 어분대체 비율은 다음과 같다 : diet 1 (대조구), 100% white fish meal (WFM, control) : diet 2, 75% WFM+25% leather meal (LM) : diet 3, 50% WFM+50% LM : diet 4, 75% WFM+25% meat and bone meal (MBM) : diet 5, 50% WFM+50% MBM. 일주간의 먹이붙임후에 잉어는 각 실험군별 평균어체중 10 g이 되도록 하여 3반복으로 무작위 배치하였고, 첫 번째와 두 번째 4주간의 사육기간이 끝난 8주후에는 평균어체중이 28 g이 되도록 재배치하여 세 번째 4 주간동안 사육하였다. 사료는 1일 3회 어체중의 2.7-4%로 12주간 공급하였다. 첫 번째와 두 번째 4주후 사료 1(대조구)과 2의 증체율은 유의적 차이가 없었으나(P>0.05), 사료 3, 4, 5는 대조구보다 유의적으로 낮았다(P<0.05). 이와는 달리 세 번째 4주후에 있어서는 대조구와 비교하여 전 사료구에서 유의적인 차이가 없었다(P>0.05). 전어체 일반성분 분석결과, 8주의 수분과 12주의 조지방을 제외하고는 모든 사료구의 일반성분치(수분, 조단백, 조지방, 조회분)에 있어서 유의적 차이가 없었다(P>0.05). 본 실험 결과, 사료내 동물성 단백질원으로 피혁분과 육골분은 충분한 먹이붙임후에 어분단백질의 50%까지 대체 가능함을 보여 주었다.

  • As far as we know, there were no studies of the effect of L-arginine on bone metabolism in post-menopausal women or ovariectomized rats. The primary objective of the current study was to determine whether arginine supplementation was associated with alterations in femoral and spinal bone mineral density (BMD) and bone markers in ovariectomized (Ovx) rats. Forty female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups, Ovx and sham groups, which were each randomly divided into two subgroups that were fed control and arginine supplemented diet. All rats were fed on experimental diet and deionized water ad libitum for 9 weeks. Bone formation was measured by serum osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) concentrations. Bone resorption was measured by deoxypyridinoline (DPD) crosslinks immunoassay and corrected for creatinine. Serum osteocalcin, growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin were analyzed using radioimmunoassay kits. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) were measured using PIXImus (GE Lunar Co, Wisconsin, USA) in spine and femur. The serum and urine concentrations of Ca and P were determined. The plasma was analyzed for arginine. Diet did not affect weight gain, mean food intake, and plasma arginine concentration. Urinary Ca excretion was decreased by arginine supplementation in Ovx rats, but statistically not significant. The Ovx rats fed arginine-supplemented diet were not significantly different in ALP, osteocalcin, crosslinks value, PTH, calcitonin and IGF-1 compared to those fed control diet. The arginine-supplemented group had significantly higher serum Ca and growth hormone than control group. Spine and femur BMD were significantly increased by arginine supplementation on 5th and 9th weeks after feeding. Our findings indicate that dietary L-arginine supplementation decreased bone mineral density loss in Ovx rats. Therefore, dietary arginine supplementation may represent a potentially useful strategy for the management of osteoporosis.

Lateral approach for maxillary sinus membrane elevation without bone materials in maxillary mucous retention cyst with immediate or delayed implant rehabilitation: case reports

  • This case series study demonstrates the possibility of successful implant rehabilitation without bone augmentation in the atrophic posterior maxilla with cystic lesion in the sinus. Sinus lift without bone graft using the lateral approach was performed. In one patient, the cyst was aspirated and simultaneous implantation under local anesthesia was performed, whereas the other cyst was removed under general anesthesia, and the sinus membrane was elevated in a second process, followed by implantation. In both cases, tapered 11.5-mm-long implants were utilized. With all of the implants, good stability and appropriate bone height were achieved. The mean bone level gain was 5.73 mm; adequate bone augmentation around the implants was shown, the sinus floor was moved apically, and the cyst was no longer radiologically detected. Completion of all of the treatments required an average of 12.5 months. The present study showed that sufficient bone formation and stable implantation in a maxilla of insufficient bone volume are possible through sinus lift without bone materials. The results serve to demonstrate, moreover, that surgical treatment of mucous retention cyst can facilitate rehabilitation. These techniques can reduce the risk of complications related to bone grafts, save money, and successfully treat antral cyst.

Peri-implant bone length changes and survival rates of implants penetrating the sinus membrane at the posterior maxilla in patients with limited vertical bone height

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to measure the peri-implant bone length surrounding implants that penetrate the sinus membrane at the posterior maxilla and to evaluate the survival rate of these implants. Methods: Treatment records and orthopantomographs of 39 patients were reviewed and analyzed. The patients had partial edentulism at the posterior maxilla and limited vertical bone height below the maxillary sinus. Implants were inserted into the posterior maxilla, penetrating the sinus membrane. Four months after implant insertion, provisional resin restorations were temporarily cemented to the abutments and used for one month. Then, a final impression was taken at the abutment level, and final cement-retained restorations were delivered with mutually protected occlusion. The complications from the implant surgery were examined, the number of failed implants was counted, and the survival rate was calculated. The periimplant bone lengths were measured using radiographs. The changes in initial and final peri-implant bone lengths were statistically analyzed. Results: Nasal bleeding occurred after implant surgery in three patients. No other complications were found. There were no failures of the investigated implants, resulting in a survival rate of 100%. Significantly more bone gain around the implants (estimated difference=-0.6 mm, P=0.025) occurred when the initial residual bone height was less than 5 mm compared to the >5 mm groups. No significant change in peri-implant bone length was detected when the initial residual bone height was 5 mm or larger. Conclusions: This study suggests that implants penetrating the sinus membrane at the posterior maxilla in patients with limited vertical bone height may be safe and functional.

성숙한 쥐의 대퇴골과 요추의 조성과 골격관련 인자에 대한 난소절제와 칼슘섭취 효과 (Effect of Ovariectomy and Calcium Intake on Femur and Lumbar Compositions and Bone Related Factors in Adult Rats)

  • This study explored the effect of calcium levels and/or ovariectomy on bone composition and its related factors using the female Sprague-Dawley rats which achieved peak bone mass in normal(0.5%) calcium intake during growth period. The rats were randomly divided into six groups and fed 0.1%, 0.5% and 1.5% calcium diets for 8 weeks after ovariectomized and sham operation. The results indicated that body weight gain was higher in ovariectomized groups than sham groups, regardless of dietary calcium levels and food intakes. Serum Ca and P concentrations were normal level regardless of dietary calcium levels and operation. Estrogen concentration was decreased in ovariectomized rat groups. Serum alkaline phosphatase activity and urinary hydroxyproline were increased in ovariectomized groups. When rats were fed normal Ca diet during growing period, weight, length and breaking force of femur were not significantly different in all groups but increased the same level. Generally, lipid contents in lumbar and femur were lower in low calcium groups and this effect was more pronounced in femur. In case of femur, the significant decrease in Ca contents of bone was observed in a relatively short period of feeding low Ca diet, even though it appeared th desirable peak bone mass had achieved through the growing period by supplementing the adequate amount of calcium. The marked decrease of estrogen levels after ovariectomy did not seem to influence greatly bone parameters measured except bone wet weight. Therefore, this study indicated that lower intake of Ca might be more important determinating factor against osteoporosis than postmenopausal state stimulated by ovariectomy in female rats. With normal or high intake of Ca it appears possible to prevent bone loss in postmenopausal period, and this might apply only in case of achieving peak bone mass in the growing with the adequate intake of calcium. 어린 병아리에서 isoflavones 급여가 골격의 회분 함량 및 물리적 성질에 미치는 영향

  • Considerable beneficial effects on osteoporosis from soy intake in postmenopausal women are being reported (Murkies et al.1998, Arjmandi et al. 1996). Isoflavones(IF), one of phytoestrogenic substances in the soybean, have been suggested for the effect. Our preliminary study showed that even the young chicks fed IF-rich diet tended to have higher bone ash content than those fed IF-poor diet. IF have been reported to decrease bone ash content than those fed IF-poor diet, IF have been reported to decrease bone loss by reducing bone resorption. Soybean meal has been one of the most important protein sources in poultry diets. We assume that the IF intake through dietary soybean meal could give meaningful influences on the birds. This study was carried out to determine effects of dietary IF from soybean sources on bone development in young chicks. Soy protein concentrate (SPC, IF-poor)and an IF concentrate(Phyto-Nutramin) were formulated together with purified-type ingredients to provide three different levels(25, 240 and 480 mg/kg) of total IF. Control diet(240 mg/kg) was prepared with isolated soyprotein(ISP, IF-rich). The diets were fed to 96, 3-day old, layer-type, male chicks, divided into 4 treatments with 3 replications for 3 weeks. Chicks fed the ISP diet had better gain/feed ratios than fed the SPC diets. Birds fed the diets with higher levels of IF tended to show higher values in serum total and ionized Ca% and tibial bone density, length % ash, stiffness and strain. This trend however, appeared less significant at the end of third week. No noticeable differences in sizes of comb and testicle and serum alkaline phosphatase activities were observed among the dietary groups. These results suggest that dietary isoflavones from soybean sources could be associated with chemical composition and physical properties of bone in sizes of comb and testicle and serum alkaline phosphatase activities were observed among the dietary groups. 난소 절제 쥐에서 우롱차의 섭취가 골밀도 및 골대사 지표에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Oolong Tea Supplementation on Bone Mineral Density and Bone-Related Markers in Ovariectomized Rats)

  • Polyphenols may be primarily responsible for the health benefits associated with tea consumption. However, the benefits of the tea polyphenols to bone health have not been studied well. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Oolong tea on bone mineral density and bone-related markers in ovariectomized rats. Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly assigned to Sham-Control, Sham-Oolongtea, Ovx-Control, and Ovx-Oolongtea groups. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) were estimated by using PIXImus (GE Lunar Co, Wisconsin.) in the spine and femur. After 6 weeks of the experimental diets, body weight gain, food intake, and food efficiency ratio (FER) were significantly higher in Ovx groups than in Sham groups regardless of diet. The serum concentration of calcium, phosphorus, ALP, and calcitonin were not significantly different according to Oolong tea supplementation. There were no significant differences in urinary calcium and phosphorus excretion between all groups. The urinary DPD crosslinks value was significantly higher in the Ovx-Control group than in the Sham-Oolongtea group. Spine BMD, femur BMD, and spine BMD per body weight were significantly lower in the Ovx groups than in the Sham groups regardless of diet. In the OVX group, spine BMC per body weight, femur BMD per body weight and femur BMC per body weight were significantly higher in the Oolong tea groups than in Control groups. It was concluded that Oolong tea supplementation positively influenced bone health in ovariectomized rats.

체중 부하 운동이 흰쥐의 골대사에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Erect Bipedal Stance Exercise on Bone Formation and Resorption in Rats)

  • The effects of the erect bipedal stance exercise on bone mass and the biomarkers of bone formation and resorption were investigated in rats. Five-week old rats were assigned into control and exercise groups. The rats of exercise group were weight-bearing-trained for 13 weeks in the cage designed to adjust progressively the height from 26.5 cm to 31.5 cm to force the rats rising an erect bipedal stance for feeding and drinking. There was no significant difference in food intakes between two groups. But body weight gain was significantly increased in control group. The lengths of femur, tibia, humerus and radius were significantly longer in control group than exercise group, but the femur and tibia weights per body weight were significantly higher in exercise group than control group. Also the breaking force of femur and tibia in exercise group were higher than control group significantly. The calcium contents of femur and tibia were significantly increased in exercise group than control group. The activity of bone specific alkaline phosphatase (B-ALP) and the osteocalcin contents of serum (the biomarkers of bone formation) in exercise group were higher than control group, but the carboxyterminal propeptide of type I procollagen (P1CP) contents of serum did not show any difference between two groups. However the urinary deoxypridinolin (DPD) excretion, biomarker of bone resorption, was significantly lower in exercise group than control group. From these results, it has been indicated that the erect bipedal stance exercise enhanced the density and the strength of femur and tibia by increasing biomarkers of bone formation and suppressing a biomarker of bone resorption in rats.

콩단백질과 이소플라본이 성장기 암컷 쥐의 골밀도에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Soy Protein and Isoflavones on Bone Mineral Density in Crowing Female Rats)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of soy protein and soy isoflavones on bone and mineral density in young female Sprague-Dawley rats. Fifty eight rats (body Weight 75 $\pm$ 5 g) were randomly assigned to one of four groups, consuming casein, soy protein concentrate, soy protein isolate (57 mg isoflavones/100 g diet) or casein added isoflavones (57 mg isoflavones /100 g diet). All rats were fed on experimental diet and deionized water ad libitum for 9 weeks. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) were measured using PIXImus (GE Lunar Co, Wisconsin, USA) in spine and femur on 3, 6, 9 weeks after feeding. The serum and urine concentrations of Ca and P were determined. Diet did not affect weight gain and mean food intake. Food efficiency ratio was lower In soy protein groups. The serum concentration of Ca and P were not changed by soy protein and isoflavones. Urinary Ca and P excretion were not significantly different. Spine BMD was significantly increased by soy protein isolate on 3 and 6 weeks after feeding. Femur BMD was significantly increased in the groups of soy protein isolate and isoflavones adding on after 9 weeks. Therefore, soy protein with rich isoflavones may be beneficial on spine and femur BMD increasement in growing female rats.
