  • The deformity occurring at the early developmental stage of red spotted grouper (Epinephelus akaara) causes detrimental effects on the process of juvenile production. In this study, we have compared the expressions of several key genes (insulin like growth factor 1: IGF-1, bone morphogenic protein 4: BMP4, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors γ: PPARγ, matrix Gla protein: MGP) for morphogenesis between normal and 2 types (cephalic and jaw) of deformed juvenile fish. Expression of these genes were investigated in the brain, liver and muscle of each group of fish (n=20) by real-time PCR. Expression of IGF-1 and BMP4 mRNA in the brain and liver showed significant difference between normal and deformed fish (p<0.05). However, no difference was observed in the expression of PPARγ and MGP mRNA between normal and deformed fish in any tissues. It seems certain that IGF-1 and BMP4 are associated with the state of deformity in juvenile red spotted grouper.

  • The congenital cutis aplasia mainly occurs in head, sometimes involving the skull and dura mater. It's cause and the rate of falling ill are not known yet, it is the disease that rate of death is high by the infection, such as, the injured vascular hemorrhange of meningitis. Craniosynostosis is the disease the appears the skull as well as the facial deformity with growing, has from the developmental difficiency, visual distibance, motor disturbance, convulsion to the neurologic impairment of mental retardation, and accompanies the each characteristic deformity following the suture fused. Satisfactory results was achieved by local flap surgery and conservative treatment on the infant, diagnosed as the congenital cutis aplasia, case 1 Also successful treatment experiences of craniosynostosis(oxycephaly, brachycephaly, trigonocephaly, cloverleaf deformity) through the frontal bone advancement and the barrel stave asteotomy, were reviewed & pursues and investigates the intracranial volume of before and after of surgery, and then reports with the literature investigation.

  • Objective: In this study effects of three types of beddings on broiler leg health and bone biomechanics were evaluated. Methods: A total of 504 male chicks (Ross 308) were randomly placed on three beddings (4 replicates/group; 42 birds/pen), zeolite-added litter (ZL), plastic-grid flooring (PF), and wood shavings (WS). On day 42, chickens were weighed, slaughtered, and samples (bone, muscle, and drumstick) were collected. Bones were subjected to leg health tests, morphometric measurements, biomechanical testing, and ash analysis. Results: Broilers in PF and WS groups showed higher live weight than the ZL group (p<0.001), and the incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) and varus valgus deformity due to distal bending was significantly higher in PF (p<0.001). Multinomial logistic regression showed that bedding has a significant (p = 0.038) contribution toward the development of TD. Tibial strength (p = 0.040), drumstick width (p = 0.001), and total femur and epiphyseal ash contents (p = 0.044, 0.016) were higher in the ZL group. Chicken live weight was correlated with tibial length and weight (r = 0.762, 0.725). Conclusion: Flooring and the type of bedding material directly affect broiler bone length, strength and leg health. Plastic bedding improves the slaughter weight of chickens on the expense of leg deformities, and zeolite litter improves leg health and bone strength.

  • The compressed fracture of spine caused by osteoporosis is one of the most frequent diseases in bone fracture. Recently the vertebroplasty has drawn much attention as a medical treatment for the compressed fracture of spine, which strengthens the vertebral body and corrects deformity, and relieves pain in patients by injecting bone cement. The purpose of this research is to provide the theoretical background for the vertebroplasty by employing scientific methods and thus to find out the improvements of the conventional surgical method. By applying the engineering analysis tools to clinical study, new application fields can also be obtained

The finite element analysis is used to investigate the vertebroplasty quantitatively. Previous works with finite element analysis have drawbacks in their simplified models geometry of vertebral body and with material properties of bone. In this paper the exact geometry of vertebral body has been constructed from medical image data and the biomechanical property changes of vertebral body in vertebroplasty have been investigate by using three dimensional finite element analysis.

  • Osteomas are benign osteoblastic tumors that occur mainly in the fronto-ethmoid areas ofthe head and neck region. When they occasionally occur in the temporal bone, the external auditory canal is the most common site of origin; they rarely occur in the mastoid region. Moreover, mastoid osteoma with mastoiditis is an extremely rare entity in the temporal bone. Recently, the authors experienced a case of mastoid osteoma with mastoiditis in the left temporal bone. The mastoid osteoma was completely resected itself without a mastoidectomy, only for correction of the cosmetic deformity; the mastoiditis was not treated. Hence, the authors report the first case of a mastoid osteoma with mastoiditis in Korea, along with a review of the related literature.

  • Charcot arthropathy of the foot and ankle is characterized by a combination of sensory, motor and autonomic peripheral neuropathy leading to gross swelling, bony destruction and finally severe bony deformity with joint instability. We report a case of very unstable Charcot arthropathy in ankle joint managed with ankle arthrodesis using fibular strut bone grafting technique.

  • Aggressive benign odontogenic neoplasms have substantial potential to grow to an enormous size with resulting bone deformities, and they often invade adjacent tissues and spread beyond their normal clinical and radiographic margins; as such, they have a high rate of recurrence. Historically, management (conservative versus aggressive) on the basis of clinical, radiographic and/or histopathologic characteristics has been controversial. However, recent advances in the understanding of the biological features of these lesions may provide greater evidence of the benefits of conservative management. Three patients with different complaints and final histopathologic diagnoses were enrolled in the study. All three cases were treated by a single operator with similar conservative surgical procedures. During follow-up, the patients had uneventful secondary healing and bone regeneration, less packing time than previously reported, no clinical or radiographic evidence of recurrence and no apparent deformity. The aggressive behavior of these lesions requires long clinical and radiographic follow-up. Conservative surgical management may be an option to reduce recurrence and morbidity and increase the probability of uneventful secondary healing and bone regeneration.

  • M$\ddot{u}$ller-Weiss disease is a rare disease presenting severe deformity of navicular with osteoarthritis. This disease can be confused with Kohler's disease, but has a different entity. A 68 years-old male with painful mid-foot deformity had diagnosed as M$\ddot{u}$ller-Weiss disease, and triple arthrodesis with autogenous iliac bone graft had been performed on his left foot. Here is a report of our case with brief review of this disease.

  • Fibrous dysplasia is quite a rare disease usually involving maxilla and mandible. Because of its benign clinical course, conservative contouring surgery has been recommended for facial deformity. 3D rapid prototype (RP) model gives a lot of informations before operation such as depth of drilling, area of resection and important anatomic structure. The purpose of this study was to report maxilla-mandibular contouring surgery in fibrous dysplasia patients. A total of 14 consecutive patients were included for surgical and esthetic evaluation. Among 14 patients, RP model study was performed in two patients with severe facial deformity. The other patients underwent contouring surgery under conventional methods. Surgical evaluation was performed with computed tomography scan before and after operation. Surgical resection was successful and patients were satisfied with the surgical results.
