This study was aimed to clarify the histopathological changes in the experimental animal model subjcted to rigid fixation performed across the frontonasal sutrue in growing rabbits. Sixteen rabbits aged 6 weeks used. In experimental group(n=12), rigid fixation with miniplates and screws was performed across the frontonasal suture. Control group(n=4) was those with periosteal elevation only. Experimental animals were sacrificed on the 2nd, 4th, 8th, and 12th week after operation, and frontonasal suture area was excised for light microscopic and scanning electron microscopic examination. The results obtained were as follows : 1. In control groups, collagen fiber bundles ran in the midportion of bone sutrue and cambial layers were seen at bone surface. Sutural surfaces are beveled and external and internal bony projected portions were observed. 2. In experimental groups, distance of bone suture was decreased by new bone formation on the 2nd week, while increased by bone resorption at the miniplate applied area and bone formation in the adjacent bone on the 4th week. 3. In experimental groups, the original bone surface was almost resorbed and new bone formation was found on the 8th week. Regulary-run collagen fibers, smooth and dense bone surfaces were similar to the bone patterns of control groups on the 12th week. Above results suggest that bone formation is restricted where the miniplate is applied, while compensatory growth is appeared in the adjacent bont. It is considered that rigid fixation with miniplates and acrews results in a little disturbance of sutural growth of the craniofacial bone in infancy and children when applied for short duration.

Introduction: Research on dental bone graft material has been actively conducted. Recently, demineralized dentin matrix material has been developed and introduced. This study examined the effect of demineralized dentin matrix material on bone healing. Subjects and Methods: The patients who received no treatment after extraction were used as the control group and patients who underwent demineralized dentin matrix material application in the extraction socket after extraction were used as the experimental group. Panorama radiography was performed at the baseline and at 3.5 months after graft material placement and CT was taken at 3.5 months after graft material placement for a radiologic evaluation. Bony tissue specimens were collected from the alveolar crest in the middle of the extraction socket using a 2 mm trephine bur after 3.5 months for the histology and hostomorphometric study. Results: 1. On the panoramic view, a higher bone density was observed in the subject group. 2. On the panoramic view, the bone density increased significantly in the extraction socket, from the baseline to 3.5 months: a 7 and 10 gray-level scale was observed in the control and experimental group, respectively (P<0.05). 3. The CT view evaluation at 3.5 months revealed significantly higher bone density in the subject group than the control group (P<0.05). 4. The histological findings showed more active new bone and lamellar bone formation in the subject group. Dentin with osteoinduction ability and enamel with osteoconduction ability appeared. 5. On histomorphometric analysis, the subject group showed significantly more new bone, lamellar bone area and lower soft tissue area (P<0.05). The difference between the groups was significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: Bone healing was improved after the application of demineralized dentin matrix material and there was active new bone and lamellar bone formation.
The classification of the bone pieces excavated from Gasan-ri archaeological site 1 in Jinju, presumed to be relics was investigated macroscopically. The remains of the animal bone were 3 classes (Mammalia, Aves, Amphibia), 5 orders (Carnivora, Artiodactyla, Galliformer, Rodentia, Salientia), and 6 species (Sus scrofa, Cervidae sp., Nyctereutes procyonides, Phasianidae, Rattus norvegicus caraco, Rana nigromaculata). The total weight of the animal bone remains was 1,002.80 g, with the identified bones comprising 975.30 g and an identification rate of 97.26%. A total of 447 animal bone fragments were identified, including 204 bone pieces of S. scrofa (468.00 g, 47.99%), 102 bone pieces of Cervidae sp. (453.79 g, 46.53%), 68 bone pieces of R. nigromaculata (4.69 g, 0.48%), 59 bone pieces of N. procyonides (47.14 g, 4.83%), 9 bone pieces of Phasianidae (0.98 g, 0.10%), and 5 bone pieces of Rattus norvegicus caraco (0.70 g, 0.07%). The bone pieces of the animal relics consisted of 81 skull (18.12%), 161 axial skeleton (36.02%), 64 forelimb (14.32%), and 141 hindlimb (31.54%) fragments. The archaeological significance of the animal bones excavated in this investigation was that wild boars and deer were presumed to have been mainly used animals in the Gasan-ri area of Jinju during the Three Kingdoms period.
An experiment was carried out to compare the body weight, shank length, rectal temperature, comb area, abdominal fat, blood parameters and bone traits of capon, slip and intact birds in Taiwan country chicken cockerels. One hundred and sixty-six Taiwan country chicken cockerels were randomly assigned to caponized or intact male groups. Caponized birds were surgically altered at 10 weeks old and raised to 28 weeks old. At 28 weeks of age, the capons were separated into capon and slip groups, depending on the atrophy of the comb and wattle in size. The results showed that body weight and shank length in slips were significantly (p<0.05) greater than in intact birds. Intact birds had the highest (p<0.05)feather scores and the lowest (p<0.05) rectal temperature. Compared with intact birds and slips, capons had a significantly (p<0.05) smaller comb area. Bone percentage, stress and cortical thickness, and bone and ash calcium content and plasma testosterone concentration, in intact birds were the highest (p<0.05) followed by slips and capons. However, intact birds had the lowest (p<0.05) plasma ionized calcium and phosphorus concentrations. Bone and ash manganese contents in capons were significantly (p<0.05)lower than those in others. These findings support the hypothesis that androgenic effects on secondary sexual characteristics are stronger than anabolic growth promoting response. Androgens can directly influence calcium fluxes in male chickens. Caponized caused a reduction in the bone percentage, stress, cortical thickness and bone calcium content.
Objective : The aim of this study was to evaluate association between lumbar spinal stenosis, one of degenerative diseases, and bone mineral density. Methods : We monitored 9 lumbar spinal stenosis patients in women above 50 years, visiting outpatient clinic of the Jaseng Oriental Medicine Hospital between January 5 2006 and March 31, 2006. They were diagnosed by radiologist ist after taking Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI). The cases were Investigated the bone mineral density using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiomerty(DEXA). and then Picture Archiving Communication System(PACS) were used to assess correlation between lumbar spinal stenosis and bone mineral density. Results : 1. In comparison of the spinal canal area and lumbar spine 2 level bone mineral density, the data showed a significant result 2. The data, between spinal canal area and lumbar spine 1-2 level bone mineral density, indicated a significant result. 3. Also, the result of comparison between spinal canal area and the lowest value of bone mineral density showed significance. Conclusions : It showed that there is a statistically significant correlation between lumbar spinal stenosis and bone mineral density.
Apical surgery cuts off the apical root and the crown-to-root ratio becomes unfavorable. Crown-to-root ratio has been applied to periodontally compromised teeth. Apical root resection is a different matter from periodontal bone loss. The purpose of this paper is to review the validity of crown-to-root ratio in the apically resected teeth. Most roots have conical shape and the root surface area of coronal part is wider than apical part of the same length. Therefore loss of alveolar bone support from apical resection is much less than its linear length. The maximum stress from mastication concentrates on the cervical area and the minimum stress was found on the apical 1/3 area. Therefore apical root resection is not so harmful as periodontal bone loss. Osteotomy for apical resection reduces longitudinal width of the buccal bone and increases the risk of endo-perio communication which leads to failure. Endodontic microsurgery is able to realize 0 degree or shallow bevel and precise length of root resection, and minimize the longitudinal width of osteotomy. The crown-to-root ratio is not valid in evaluating the prosthodontic prognosis of the apically resected teeth. Accurate execution of endodontic microsurgery to preserve the buccal bone is essential to avoid endo-perio communication.
Background: Crestal bone loss known as saucerization is a frequently observed phenomenon. Recent studies have shown that implants with micothreaded crest module reduced the force concentration in the crestal region thus resulting in no or reduced crestal bone loss. This study presents a clinical, histologic, and histometric evaluation of implants with microthreaded crest module and SLA surface. Methods: The implants were placed in the mandible of 5 beagle dogs weighing 10-15kg. Four premolars were bilaterally extracted 8 weeks prior to implant placement. Mucoperiosteal flap was elevated and drilling with increasing diameter was performed under saline irrigation. After countersinking 2 implants were placed in each side resulting in 4 implants per dog. Healing period of 8 weeks was allowed before sacrificing the animals. Histologic preparation was performed for histologic and histometric analysis. Bone to implant contact as well as percentage of bone area inside threads were measured. T-test was used for statistical analysis with pvalue p<0.05. Results: 1. Healing was uneventful without any cover screw exposure. New bone formation around the implants was observed without any inflammatory infiltration. 2. Bone to implant contact in the microthread and thread were 43.90 ${\pm}$ 20.30 %, and 53.19 ${\pm}$ 20.97 % respectively. The overall bone to implant contact was 48.54 ${\pm}$ 20.95 %. 3. Percentage of bone area inside threads were 54.43 ${\pm}$ 10.39 %, and 38.44 ${\pm}$ 16.44 % for the microthread and thread respectively. There was statistically significant difference(p<0.05). The overall percentage of bone area inside threads was 46.67 ${\pm}$ 15.68 %.

Distraction osteogenesis refers to the biological process responsible for new bone formation between bone segments by gradual distraction after osteotomy. For the past several years, various inconveniences including a protracted consolidation period that requires patients to wear a distractor frame longer, as well as higher medical costs, have not been remedied by improvements in osteotomy, distraction rate and monitoring system. Furthermore, side effects such as pin tract infections and soft tissue swelling may arise due to the long treatment period. These drawbacks form the rationale of this study which purports to seek a method by which the consolidation period can be reduced. This paper examines how platelet-rich plasma(PRP), known to facilitate osteogenesis, influences bone formation when applied in distracted area. Ten mongrel dogs, which were made to wear external distractor frames after osteotomy in both sides of the mandible, were used as subjects. After a 7day period of latency, distraction was carried out at a rate of 1mm/day for 14 consecutive days. After the onset of distraction, 2ml of PRP and a mixture of calcium gluconate and thrombine were injected into the center of the distracted callus on the left side of the mandible. The left was injected with PRP while the right side was set as the control site without PRP treatment. Execution at the onset of distraction and in 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks after the consolidation period, clinical and radiographic tests, bone mineral density examination, histological examination and histomorphometric analysis were conducted to compare both sides. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Based on the clinical examination at two weeks, more remarkable cortical bone formation was found on the buccal and lingual side of the distracted area in the PRP treatment site than in the control site. No visual difference was found between the PRP treatment site and the control site at four eight weeks. 2. Based on the radiological examination, a distinct increase in the radiopaque appearance of the PRP treatment site was revealed at two weeks, but this increase appeared to slow down at four and eight weeks. 3. Examination of bone mineral density revealed a significant difference at two weeks with the PRP treatment site yielding density two times higher than the control site. This difference lessened after four weeks, and disappeared at eight weeks. 4. The histomorphometric examination revealed that about 20% more bony trabeculae area(20%, higher) was formed in the PRP treatment site than in the control site. In conclusion, it can be said that PRPs effect on stimulating bone formation in the PRP treatment site manifest as early as two weeks. Trabeculae formation likewise increased throughout the whole period. If this result can be applied to humans, the consolidation period can be reduced by injecting PRP into the distracted area.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of partial osseointegration situation on bone loading patterns around two different free-standing screw shaped implants (Nobel Biocare, Gothenburg, Sweden and Degussa-Huls, Hanau, German). Two dimensional axisymmetric Finite element models of two implants(10mm length and 4mm diameter) were created according to different bone quantity, quality and osseointegration ratio in maxilla and mandible bone. At the same time uni-cortical and hi-cortical fixation were analyzed. Generally, full bond case showed less stress than partial bond case in overall area and mandibular model showed less amount of stress than that of maxilla model. Maximum stress of the Branemark implant is higher than that of ANKYLOS regardless of bonding ratio at crestal and apex region. However, more stress concentration was noted in ANKYLOS implant at screw body area especially in mandible. The effect of bicortical fixation on crestal bone stress reduction is dramatical in mandible however, there was no significant effect in maxillary case. The effect of partial bond on stress distribution was more significant at screw body and apex region than in crestal region. Partial bond cases demonstrated greater stress accumulation in trabecular bone than cortical bone. It is concluded that the more accurate model of implant and bone which affects stress and strain distribution is needed to mimic in vivo behavior of implants.
The maxillary posterior area is the most challenging site for the dental implant. After missing of teeth on maxillary posterior area due to periodontal problems, the remaining alveolar ridge is usually very thin because of not only pneumatization of maxillary sinus but also destruction of alveolar bone. The maxillary sinus bone graft procedure is one of the most predictable and successful treatments for the rehabilitation of atrophic and pneumatized endentulous posterior maxilla. But, in case of severe destruction of alveolar bone due to periodontal problems, very long crown length is still remaining problem after successful sinus graft procedures. We performed vertical augmentation of maxillary posterior alveolar ridge using mandibular ramal block bone graft with simultaneous sinus graft. After this procedures, we could get more favorable crown-implant ratio of final prosthodontic appliance and more satisfactory results on biomechanics. This is a preliminary report of the vertical augmentation of maxillary posterior alveolar ridge using mandibular ramal block bone graft with simultaneous sinus graft, so requires more long-term follow up and further studies.
