This paper presents a stable isotope chemistry of bone collagen and carbonate. Bone carbonate has the potential to provide additional isotopic information. However, it remains controversial as to whether archaeological bone carbonate retains its original biogenic signature. I used a novel application of bone density fractionation and checked the integrity of ${\delta}^{13}C_{apa}$ values using radiocarbon dating. Diagenesis in archaeological bone carbonate still remains to be resolved in extracting biogenic information. The combined use of bone density fractionation and differential dissolution method shows a large shift in the ${\delta}^{13}C_{apa}$ values. Although ${\delta}^{13}C_{apa}$ values are improved in lighter density fractions, a large percentage of contamination in bone carbonate was reported via $^{14}C$ dating compared to that noted with bone collagen.

Bone density parameters of children, unlike that of adult, might reflect growth effect along longitudinal direction as well as bone mass. The clinical test was performed for 859 male/female children with age 6-16 years. Ultrasonic imaging system was used to measure bone density, and relationship of bone density to age was evaluated. The bone quality index appeared to be highly correlated with age for male/female children. It was found that bone quality index rose rapidly in the first growth period. The bone quality index was then kept almost unchanged in the period of puberty, and slowly rose after puberty. It was also found that growth of female stopped earlier than that of male. Also, if more clinical examinations are performed by applying various sizes of region of interest, relationship between bone density and age is expected to be more reliable.
Purpose : This study was peformed to evaluate the effect of Kamijoaguiem(JGE) on the bone mass and its related factors. Methods : We used ovariectomized rat as an estrogen-deficient animal model. The model rats of osteoporosis showed a significant decrease in bone density, bone ash density, calcium content of femur bone. At the 7th day after operating ovariectomy, rats were administered with JGE per orally, and continued for 10 weeks. And osteoporosis related parameters were determined to investigate the effect of JGE. Results : Bone density, bone ash density, bone calcium, magnesium and phosphorus was decreased in osteoporotic rats. JGE improved the decreased bone density, bone ash density and the decreased bone magnesium, but JGE didn't improve the decreased bone calcium and phosphorus in osteoporotic rats. Osteocalcin in serum and hydroxy-proline excretion in urine were increased in osteoporotic rats. Their levels were decreased when JGE was administered. ALP activity in serum was increased in osteoporotic rats. JGE didn't induce any significant changes. JGE showed significant increase in serum calcium level, total protein level, albumin level, BUN level, serum LDH activity. JGE didn't show significant increase in serum T-cholesterol density, triglyceride density, HDL-cholesterol density. JGE didn't show significant increase in RBC number, hemoglobin level, platelet number, hematocrit level. JGE showed inhibitory effect on the degradation of bone-matrix in osteoporotic rats, in histological examination to Hematoxylin-eosin stain. Conclusion : JGE might improve bone density due to inhibition of bone resolution in osteoporotic rats. It suggest that JGE may be useful prescription in osteoporosis.
In this paper, we propose a method of measuring bone mineral density in a peripheral-type clinical X-ray CT using a phantom, and we propose a method of classifying osteoporosis using bone mineral density and bone structure parameters together. It segments the trabecular bone region and cortical bone region for the six sections of the phantom and calculates the average HU value of the segmented regions. By using these values, it derives an expression converting HU value to bone mineral density. It segments trabecular bone of 1 cm region in the end part of distal radius and extracts the bone mineral density and structural parameters for the trabecular bone region. We extracted bone mineral density and structural parameters for the 18 subjects each of normal and osteoporotic group. We carried out classification experiments using three classification methods; SAD, SVM, ANN. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, likelihood ratio of the classification was improved in the order of ANN, SVM and SAD. Also, The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, likelihood ratio of the classification was improved when we use the bone mineral density and structural parameters together.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate analysis of women with low back pain and osteoporosis were measured for 40 normal in the women from July 20, 2000 to October 20, 2000. Methods: Bone mineral density(BMD) of lumbar spine was measured using energy absorptiometry and were correlated with age, calcium. alkaline phosphatase. bone mineral density standard T scores(p<0.05). Results: The bone mineral density of the lumbar spine decreased with aging, The bone mineral density of the lumbar spine decreased with the serum calcium and phosphate increased. The mean bone mineral density of the lumbar spine of healthy women in age($50\sim59$) was $0.83g/cm^2$, the lumbar spine of women low back pain in age($50\sim59$) was 0.75 glad. Conclusion: In the multiple regression of risk factors to bone mineral density(BMD) of lumbar spine were correlated with age, of abortion, calcium, bone mineral density standard T scores(p<0,05). In the prevention and early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis, the physician should consider the risk factors.
To demonstrate possible influences of general bone density on the mandible, histomorphometric analysis was carried out in mandibles and iliac bones and the correlation of the two bone densities was tested. Comparison of bony density in women and men over 60 years in the mandible was carried out too. Quantitative computed tomography(QCT) was taken in cross-section of mandibles at the same site where histomorphometric analysis was peformed to evaluate the reliability of QCT. The analysis included 40 cadavers with no known diseases affecting the bones. The subjects consisted of 15 females and 25 males with a mean age of 60.3 years. Spearman correlation analysis and Wilcoxon rank sum test was performed. The results were as follows. 1. There was statistically no correlation between the mandible and iliac bone in the values of corrected cortical width(CCW), cortical porosity(POR) in cortex, and total bone volume(TBV), mean trabecular plate thickness(MTPT), mean trabecular plate density(MTPD), and mean trabecular plate separation(MTPS) in trabecular bone. 2. Comparison of women and men over 60 years, men had statistically higher bone density than women except fir POR of buccal and lingual cortex, and WTPD of alveolar trabeculae in mandible. 3. There was statistically significant correlation between TBV of trabecular bone and CT No., but not between POR and CT No. in mandible. According to the results above, there was no correlation between mandible and iliac bone density and between mandibular bony density and age. Further studies are required to support the results. A more noninvasive method to be able to measure the bone density of mandible should be developed and it is necessary to accumulate data on the normal values of bone density of mandible according to age and sex. Further study should be carried out about QCT to measure mandibular bony density using QCT.
This study was done to evaluate the effect of dietary calcium level (a diet which met 100% or twice the calcium level in AIN-76 diet) on preventing bone loss in ovariectomized rats. Forty Sprauge-Dawley female rats(body weight 200$\pm$5g)were divided into two groups. One group were ovariecotomized (Ovx) while the others received sham operation(Sham). Thereafter, each rat group was further divided into normal calcium diet(0.52%) and high calcium diet(1.04%) subgroups. All rats were fed on experimental diet and deionized water ad libitum for 8 weeks. The total body, spine and femur bone mineral densities and bone mineral contents were measured by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, Eight weeks following operation, ovariectomized rats fed a high calcium diet had a significantly higher total bone mineral content, total bone calcium content, spine bone mineral density, spine bone mineral content and femur bone mineral content than ovariectomized rats fed control calcium diet. The correlation between dietary calcium intake level and spine bone mineral density were positive, but there was no correlation between dietary calcium intake and femur bone mineral density. The findings from the present study demonstrated that bone loss due to ovarian hormonal deficiency can be partially prevented by a high calcium diet. Futhermore, these findings support the strategy of the use of a high calcium diet in the prevention of estrogen depleted bone loss(postmenopausal osteoporosis)
The effects of cheonggukjang and doenjang on bone mineral density, trabecular area and cortical thickness of the tibia, and serum osteocalcin level in ovariectomized rats were investigated. After 4 weeks, bone mineral density, bone trabecular area, the cortical thickness index, and serum osteocalcin level were analyzed. The cheonggukjang and doenjang diet groups showed significant prevention of ovariectomized (OVX)-related body weight gain. Whole body bone mineral density of the OVX group was significantly lower than that of the sham group, whereas the cheonggulgang and doenjang diets resulted in complete restoration of bone mineral density. Trabecular area in the proximal diaphysis and cortical thickness in the distal diaphysis of the tibia were increased significantly in the cheonggukjang and doenjang diet fed groups. The cheonggukjang and doenjang diets significantly reduced serum osteocalcin level in the OVX rats. These results suggest that cheonggukjang and doenjang might have inhibitory effects on osteoporosis, by showing accelerated bone formation in OVX rats.
Purpose: This study examined the significance of increased bone density according to time after implantation on maxilla using demographic data with CBCT and compared the bone density between before vs. after implantation using the Hounsfield index. Materials and Methods: Twenty-five implant site on maxilla were selected. Cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) scans were used for the analysis. The implant sites were evaluated digitally using the Hounsfield scale with EzImplant TM and the results were compared over time. Statistical data over time was carried out to determine the correlation between the recorded Hounsfield unit (HU) over time and gender difference using repeated ANOVA. Results: The bone density of implantation site over time showed an increase in the HU mean values. Immediately after implantation, bone density was significantly increased than bone density before implantation. Until 6 month follow-up, bone density showed stable increasement. There is no significant difference on gender. Conclusions: Using CBCT, bone density increased over time after implantation on maxilla. Bone density measurements using CBCT might provide an objective assessment of the bone quality as well as the correlation between bone density and stability of implant.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 12-week Tai Chi on the bone mineral density and bone metabolic markers in postmenopausal women Methods: Data were collected from March to July, 2009. Fifty postmenopausal women were recruited for the study. Twenty two women were allocated to experimental group, and 28 to control group. The experimental group underwent Tai Chi exercise twice a week for twelve weeks. The control group was only notified with results of bone mineral density and bone metabolic markers. Bone mineral density was measured by using of DTX-200 (Osteometer MediTech, Hawthorne, CA, USA) at distal radius site and bone metabolic markers were measured by radioimmunoassay method. Collected data were analyzed by t-test, $X^2$-test, and Mann-Whitney test. Results: After 12 weeks of treatment, the Tai Chi group showed a significant difference in bone mineral density compared to control group but no significant effect on osteocalcin and deoxypyridinoline level. Conclusion: Our results suggest that 12 weeks of Tai chi may delay bone loss in postmenopausal women.
