Nylon 6 based magnetic pellets for injection molding were produced using plasma arc melt-spun $Nd_{10.5}Fe_{79}Co_{2}Zr_{1.5}B_{7}$ powders. Two sorts of bonded magnets made of two different sizes of particles ($38~75\;\mu\textrm{m}$ and $75~150\;\mu\textrm{m}$) were prepared to determine critical volume fraction of magnet powders, and the magnetic prop erties of the magnets were discussed as a function of density. For the nylon fi based Nd-Fe-Co-Zr-B pellets made of $38~75\;\mu\textrm{m}$ particles, the critical volume fraction of powders 0.7 was obtained with the pellet density which is 90% of theoretical density while the magnets of $75~150\;\mu\textrm{m}$ showed the density of 87% of the theoretical value with the same volume fraction. The nylon (i magnets with the addition of 0.5 wt. % silicon oil only exhibited the best magnetic properties to have $_{i}H_{c}=8.8\;kOe,\;B_{r}=5.1\;kG$ and $(BH)_{max}=5.2\;MGOe$ which are of world class. An empirical relationship in predicting the magnet density with a known fraction ($V_s$) of loading powders was obtained such as ${\rho}(g/cm^{3})=1.1+K.V_{s}$ where the K ranges over 5.3~5.6 be ing dependent upon the particle size loaded.
The reaction bonded alumina ceramics with reinforced particles which have low shrinkage were pro-duced by blending of SiC or TiC or ZrO2 powders to the mixture of Al metal and Al2O3 powder. The powd-ers were attrition milled isostantically pressed and preheated tio 110$0^{\circ}C$ with a heating rate of $1.5^{\circ}C$/min The specimens were then sintered at the temperature range 1500 to 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours with a heating rate of 5$^{\circ}C$/min. The specimens showed 5-9% weight gain and 2-9% dimensional expansion through the complete oxidation of Al after preheating up to 11--$^{\circ}C$ the overall dimensional change of the specimens after the reaction sintering at 1500-1$600^{\circ}C$ was 6-12% The maximum densities were 92% theoretical. The fine grain-ed(average grain size :0.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) microstructure were observed in the specimen with ZrO2 and SiC. But the microstructure of specimen with TiC was relatively coarse.(average grain size : 2.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) The mullite phase was formed by the reaction of Al2O3 and SiO2 in a specimen with SiC. In the TiC contained specimen TiC was oxidized into TiO2 and finally reacted with Al2O3 to form Al2TiO5 during sintering.
This research was carried out to investigate the effect of paper sludge addition on formaldehyde emission, and physical and mechanical properties of UF-particleboard. In order to investigate the effect of paper sludge addition to resin, particleboards were bonded with urea-formaldehyde resins containing 5, 10, 15% paper sludge powders of three types(A Type: -200 mesh, B Type: -100~+200 mesh. C Type: -50~+100 mesh), based on weight of resin solid. Also the effect of paper sludge addition to furnish was studied from particleboards fabricated with ratios of sludge to particle of 5:95, 10:90, 15:85 based on oven-dry weight. Tests were conducted on the manufactured particleboards to determine formaldehyde emission, bending properties, internal bond strength and thickness swelling. The obtained results were summarized as follows: The addition of paper sludge powder to resin yielded a higher pH of cured resin. Formaldehyde emission decreased with the increase of paper sludge powder addition to resin and paper sludge composition ratio to furnish. Particleboard bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin containing paper sludge powder and particleboard mixed with paper sludge have similar bending properties(MOR, MOE) and thickness swelling compared with control particleboard. Internal bond strength of particleboards treated with paper sludge were lower than that of control particleboard. The use of paper sludge as scavenger was achieved reduction of formaldehyde emission without depression of physical and mechanical properties of particleboard. Also the use of paper sludge was able to concluded that there is possibility of partial substitution of wood particle materials.
Based on the structure feature of a tree, a cylindrical $Ti_2AlC$/graphite layered composite has been fabricated through heat treating a graphite column and six close-matched thin wall $Ti_2AlC$ cylinders bonded with the $Ti_2AlC$ powders at $1300^{\circ}C$ and low oxygen partial pressure. SEM examination reveals that the bond interlayers between cylinders or that between cylinder and column are not fully dense without any crack formation. During the compressive test, the strain of the $Ti_2AlC$/graphite layered composite is about twice higher than that of the monolithic $Ti_2AlC$ ceramic, and the compressive strength of the layered composite is 348 MPa. The layered composite show the noncatastrophic fracture behaviors due to the debonding and shelling off of the layers, which are different from the monolithic $Ti_2AlC$ ceramic. The mechanism of the improved deformation capacity and noncatastrophic failure modes are attributed to the presence of the central soft graphite column and cracks deflection by the bond interlayers.
High purity Si-C (99.999%) powder prepared by mechanical alloying was added to a commercial SiC powder as a sintering additive. Reaction bonded silicon carbide balls and jars with high purity (99.98%) were used for the mechanical alloying. As a result, the purity of the sintered Si-C was higher than 99.99%. When sintered at $2200^{\circ}C$ under 50 MPa pressure for 1 h, SiC containing 10 wt% of high purity Si-C showed a relative density of 95.3%, similar to the relative density of commercial SiC (95%). However, the relative density of SiC decreased to 90.6% without the additive when the applied pressure decreased to 40 MPa. In contrast, the relative density was nearly unaffected by the decrease of the pressure when using the Si-C additive. Therefore, the addition of Si-C powder promoted the densification of SiC above $2000^{\circ}C$ under 40 MPa pressure.
This study assessed the feasibility of a Ti3AlC2 MAX phase as an Al-source for the formation of a mullite bond in the fabrication of porous SiC tubes with high strength. The as-received Ti3AlC2 was partially oxidized at 1200℃ for 30 min before using to minimize the abrupt volume expansion caused by oxidation during sintering. Thermal treatment at 1100-1400℃ for 3 h in air led to the formation of Al2O3 by the decomposition of Ti3AlC2, which reacted further with oxidation-derived SiO2 on the SiC surface to form a mullite phase. The fabricated porous SiC tubes with a relative density of 48 - 62 % exhibited mechanical strengths of 80 - 200 MPa, which were much higher than those with the Al2O3 filler material. The high mechanical strength of the Ti3AlC2-added porous SiC was explained by the rigid mullite neck formation along with the retained Ti3AlC2 with good mechanical properties.
Nanocrystalline transient aluminas (${\gamma}$-alumina) were coated on core particles (${\gamma}$-alumina) by a carbonate precipitation and thermal-assisted combustion, which is environmentally friend. The ammonium aluminum carbonate hydroxide (AACH) as a precursor for coating of transient aluminas was produced from precipitation reaction of ammonium aluminum sulfate and ammonium hydrogen carbonate. The crystalline size and morphology of the synthetic, AACH, were greatly dependent on pH and temperature. AACH with a size of 5 nm was coated on the core alumina particle at pH 9. whereas rod shape and large agglomerates were coated at pH 8 and 11, respectively. The AACH was tightly bonded coated on the core particle due to formation of surface complexes by the adsorption of carbonates, hydroxyl and ammonia groups on the surface of the core alumina powder. The synthetic precursor successfully converted to amorphous- and ${\gamma}$-alumina phase at low temperature through decomposition of surface complexes and thermal-assisted phase transformation.
The HDDR (Hydrogenation-Disproportionation-Desorption-Recombination) process is a special method to produce anisotropic NdFeB powders for bonded magnet. The effect of the modified HDDR process on magnetic properties of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-based magnet with several composition $Nd_{11.2}Fe_{66.5-x}Co_{15.4}B_{6,8}Zr{0.1}Ga_x(x=0{\sim}1.0)$ and that of microelement Ga, disproportional temperature and annealing temperature on $_jH_c$, grain size were investigated in order to produce anisotropic powder with high magnetic properties. It was found that modified HDDR process is very effective to enhance magnetic properties and to fine grain size. The addition of Ga could change disproportionation character remarkably of the alloy and could improve magnetic properties of magnet powder. Increasing annealing temperature induces significant grain growth. And grain size produced by modified HDDR process is significantly smaller than those produced by conventional HDDR process.
In compacting the melt-spun $Nd_{14}Fe_{76}Co_{4}B_{6}$ and $Nd_{10.5}Fe_{79}Co_{2}Zr_{15}B_{7}$ magnetic powders. the difference in composition induces a different behavior of closed packing rate as a function of aspect ratio of the powders. The $Nd_{10.5}Fe_{79}Co_{2}Zr_{1.5}B_{7}$ alloy having a low Co/Fe ratio (low density) shows the better green density to have an enhanced closed packing rate. An empirical power equation relating the green density with the compacting pressure was obtained such as ${\phi}(g/cm^{2})=5.2~5.6{\times}P^{0.045~0.065}(ton/cm^{2})$. The $Nd_{14}Fe_{76}Co_{4}B_{6}$ alloy having a high Nd/Fe ratio possesses much finer grain size(50~60 nm) than that of $Nd_{10.5}Fe_{79}Co_{2}Zr_{1.5}B_{7}$ alloy and shows the higher coercivity($iH_{c}=14~15kOe$). The higher Nd/Fe ratio in the melt-spun Nd-Fe-Co-B alloy, where the domain wall pinning mechanism was found to be predominant, assists the formation of Nd-rich grain boundary phase acting as a pinning site. The grain boundary ranges over $12~16\;{\AA}$ thick in the Nd-Fe-Co-B alloy while it ranges over $8~12\;{\AA}$ thick in the Nd-Fe-Co-Zr-B alloy.
$ZrB _2$ was prepared from a mixture of $ZrO_2$, $B_2$$O_3$and Mg by SHS method. The combustion products were successfully obtained from a mixture of $Zro_2$:$B_2$$O_3$:Mg=1:2.0:8.5(molar ratio). MgO, by-product, was removed to 92.7% by leaching with 1M HCl solution at 9$0^{\circ}C$, for 10 hours. After leaching, the mean particle size of the resultant $ZrB_2$powders was 23.6$\mu\textrm{m}$. $ZrB_2$-ZrC composite was suitably obtained from a mixture of C/Zr=1.2 molar ratio by arc-melting method. The density of arc-melted specimen increased by adding excess zirconium content(x). The bulk density was 6.17g/㎤ for x=0, and 6.37g/㎤ x=4. Vickers hardness of arc-melted specimen was /$1290kg\textrm{mm}^2$ for x=0, and fracture toughness increased to 4.2MPa.m\ulcornerforx=4 compared to 3.4MPa.m\ulcornerfor x=0.
