A STUDY ON BONDING STRENGTH OF DENTAL AMALGAM TO GLASS IONOMER CEMENT FOLLOWING SURFACE TREATMENT (글라스아이오노머 시멘트 표면 처리에 따른 치과용 아말감의 전단 결합 강도에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the 24-hour shear bond strength of amalgam to glass ionomer cement, using five different intermediaries. The intermediaries used in this study were Scotchbond 2 (light curing dentin adhesive), Panavia (resin cement), liquid' of glass ionomer cement (chemical curing & light curing), and uncured mixture of light curing glass ionomer cement. This study was operated with 48 specimens devided into 6 groups. The experimental groups are as follows: Group 1 : Bonded Amalgam to chemical curing glass ionomer cement with liquid of chemical curing glass ionomer. Group 2 : Bonded Amalgam to light curing glass ionomer cement with liquid of chemical curing glass ionomer. Group 3: Bonded Amalgam to light curing glass ionomer cement with resin cement. Group 4: Bonded Amalgam to light curing glass ionomer cement with light curing dentin adhesive. Group 5: Bonded Amdlgam to light curing glass ionomer cement with liquid of light curing glass ionomer. Group 6: Bonded Amalgam to light curing glass ionomer cement with uncured mixture of light curing glass ionomer cement. 30 minutes after amalgam condensation, all specimens were stored for 24 hours in water at $37^{\circ}C$ and tested with Instron (1122). The following results obtained: 1. The shear bond strength of group 6 was higher than those of the other groups (46.7 kgf/$cm^2$, p<0.05). 2. The shear bond strength of resin cement intermediary group was lower than that of the group using uncured mixture of light curing glass ionomer cement. 3. The results of group 1 and group 2 were different, even though the inter-me diaries used were same. 4. Intermediary of Group 5 did not show complete set in Scanning Electromicroscopic examination. 5. Light-curing dentin adhesive did not show any bonding ability to amalgam.

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE BONDING STRENGTH OF THE JOINED AMALGAM RESTORATION (아말감 충전물간(充塡物間)의 결합강도(結合強度)에 관(關)한 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究))

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the tensile and bonding strength of the joined amalgam restoration. Amalgam alloys of fine-cut (F-type), spherical (S-type), and dispersed type (D-type) were selected in this study, and all specimens were divided into three groups according to the condensation methods as follows. Group I : the control group which condense the same kinds of mixed amalgam into the whole part of the mold respectively. Group II : the group which condense a mix of amalgam into one half of the mold, and then condense a new mix of amalgam into the rest half of the mold 15 minutes later. Group III : the group which condense a mixed amalgam into one half of the mold, and then condense a new mix of amalgam into the rest half of the mold 7 days later. All specimens were stored in incubator at $37{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for seven days with immersing in saline solution before testing. The tensile and bonding strength of them were measured with Instron Universal Testing machine. The results were as follows: 1. In Group I, the order of tensile strength was F-type, S-type, and D-type. 2. In case of bonding of S-type + S-type, the difference of the bonding strength between Group II and III was not significant. (P> 0.05) 3. The bonding strength of F-type + S-type of Group II was marked the highest in value, and the lowest bonding strength was showed in bonded D-type + D-type of Group III. 4. In case of bonding with the different kinds of amalgam alloy in Group II, the specimen bonded to F-type was marked the highest bonding strength, and the specimen bonded with F-type was marked the lowest one. In Group II, the bonding strength of the specimens bonded with the same kinds of amalgam alloy was presented as the same order as that of Group I. 5. In Group III, the specimen connected with D-type marked the lowest bonding strength of all specimens. In Group III, the bonding strength of the specimens connected with the same kinds of amalgam alloy was the order of S-type + S-type, F-type + F-type, and D-type + D-type.

Shear bond strength of orthodontic adhesive to amalgam surface using light-cured resin (광중합형 레진으로 아말감 면에 브라켓 접착 시 전단결합강도)

  • This study was performed to compare the shear bond strength of orthodontic adhesive to amalgam according to different light sources (halogen-based light and light emitting diode (LED)) and amalgam surface treatments. Ninety extracted human premolars were randomly divided into 6 groups (4 experimental and 2 control groups) of 15 by light sources and surface treatments. Orthodontic brackets were bonded and shear bond strength was measured with an Instron universal testing machine. The findings were as follows: The bond strength of adhesive to amalgam surface was 3-5.5 MPa which was lower than that of acid-etched enamel (19 MPa) control. In the sandblasted amalgam surface, the shear bond strength of the halogen light group was higher than that of the LED group (p < 0.05) but. in the non-treated amalgam surface. there was no significant difference in the shear bond strength according to the light sources (p> 0.05). Within the same light source. sandblasting had no significant effect on the shear bond strength of the adhesive bonded to amalgam surface (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in shear bond strength according to the light sources in acid-etched enamel control groups. This results suggest that there can be a limit in using light curing adhesives when brackets are bonded to an amalgam surface. Additional clinical studies are necessary before routine use of halogen light and LED light curing units can be recommended in bonding brackets to an amalgam surface.

A STUDY ON THE SHEAR BOND STRENGTH OF ESTHETIC RESTORATIVE MATERIALS TO DENTAL AMALGAM (아말감과 심미성 수복재료와의 전단 결합강도에 관한 연구)

  • Composite resin and glass-ionomer cement can be used for the purpose of repair of defective amalgam restoration. The purpose of this study was to evaluate of shear bond strength of esthetic restorative materials to dental amalgam. The materials used in this study were Photo Clearfil Bright(light curing composite resin), Clearfil F II(chemical curing composite resin), Fuji II LC(light curing glass-ionomer cement), Fuji II (chemical curing glass-ionomer cement), All-Bond 2(intermediary), and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (intermediary). A total of 120 acrylic cylinders with amalgam were divided into 8 groups After amalgam condensation, all specimens were stored for 48 hours in water at $37^{\circ}C$ and tested with Instron universal testing machine between amalgam and composite resins and glass-ionomer cements. The data were analyzes statiscally by ANOVA and Duncan test. The following results obtained ; 1. The shear bond strength of bonded composite resin to amalgam was higher than bonded glass-ionomer cement(P<.001). 2. The group 4 had highest shear bond strength with 15.45kgf/$cm^2$ and the group 5 had lowest shear bond strenght with 3.26kgf/$cm^2$(P<.001). 3. In the group 3, 4, 5, 6, the group 3, 4 with All-Bond 2 had higher shear bond strength than the group 5, 6 with Scotch bond MP both in light-curing and in chemical curing. 4. Both in composite resin and glass-ionomer cement, chemical curing materials had higher shear bond stength than light curing materials(P<.001).

CLINICAL EVALUATION OF AMALGAM BONDING : TWO YEARS FOLLOW-UP (접착형 아말감의 2년 후 임상적 평가)

  • Many dental practitioners are bonding amalgam to tooth structure. The potential advantage of this procedure, suggested by in vitro test results, are reduced microleakage, which could lead to a reduced incidence of postoperative sensitivity ; increased strength of the prepared tooth ; and retention of restoration in less retentive preparations, with the potential fer conserving tooth structure. Although in vitro studies support this procedure, its efficacy has not been adequately confirmed in the clinical environment. The authors placed traditional Class I and Class II, bonded and unbonded amalgam restorations in 76 teeth. Fuji I Glass Ionomer luting cement was the bonding agent selected. Marginal adaptation were evaluated after two years. the authors found no significant difference in marginal adaptation between bonded and unbonded restorations.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect on treatment methods to shear bond strength between composite resin and amalgam when the alloy surface was finished with a diamond wheel or an sandblaster. Forty round acrylic cylinders were fabricated with a diameter of 33mm and a height of 20mm to fit into the device used during shear bond strength testing. A round undercut cavity (diameter, 8mm: depth, 2.5mm) was prepared in the center of the acrylic surface and the cavity was restored using a amalgam. A total of 40 acrylic cylinders with amalgam were divided into 4 groups according to treatment method. The group treatment were as follows : Group 1 : acid etching after finishing the amalgam with diamond wheel Group 2 : no acid etching after finishing the amalgam with diamond wheel Group 3 : acid etching after sandblasting the amalgam Group 4 : no acid etching after sandblasting the amalgam The shear bond strength of composite resin bonded to amalgam of each specimen was tested with a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min and 500kg in full scale. The results were as follow: 1. After diamond finishing, the non-acid etching group had highest shear bond strength with 7.29kg/$cm^2$ and after sandblasting, the acidetching group had lowest shear bond strength with 4.49kg/$cm^2$. 2. In both diamond finishing and sandblasting group, acid etching of the roughened amalgam surface decreased the shear bond strength. 3. The group treated with a diamond wheel had higher shear bond strength those treated with an sandblaster but there was not significanat.

  • The purpose of this study was to asses the shear bond strengths of 3 types of light-curing Glass Ionomer cement to dental amalgam with or without an intermediary agent. 60 amalgam adherent specimens were prepared and aged in water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 3 days. Before bonding, the amalgam surfaces were finished flat on 600-grit silicon carbide paper. 30 specimens among 60 were used for bonding in this condition, and the other 30 were covered with a thin layer of light-curing intermediary agent. Shear bond strengths were measured with universal testing machine (Instron, Model 4301) and statistically processed by ANOVA and t-test. On completion of bond test, the fracture surfaces were examined under light microscope so that the mode of bond failure could be assessed The results were as follows : 1. Bond strength of Fuji II LC group showed the hightest value and was followed by Vitremer, Vitrebond groups (p<0.05). 2. The bond strengths achieved without an intermediary agent were higher than those obtained with intermediary agent (p<0.05). 3. For the specimens bonded with intermediary agent, bond failures occured mostly at the agent-amalgam interface. So, the use of intermediary bonding agent was thought not recommendable at glass ionomer-amalgam interface.

BOND STRENGTH OF BONDED AMALGAM USING DENIAL ADHESIVES (치과용 접착제를 사용한 접착 아말감의 결합 강도)

  • The purpose of this study was to measure and analyze the bond strength of bonded amalgam using dental adhesives and to compare this with light-curing composite resin. Sections 8mm in diameter were punched out from the labial surface of bovine anterior teeth. These were embedded in clear acrylic resin blocks with labial surface facing out. 55 specimens were made for enamel and dentin each. After dividing these into 5 groups, group 1: Superbond C&B, group 2: Panavia 21, group 3: All-Bond 2, group 4: Fuji I Glass Ionomer Luting Cement, group 5: Scotchbond Multi-Purpose(Restorative Z-100), molds with holes of 6.3mm in diameter and 1.5mm in depth were placed over the specimens. The exposed tooth surfaces were treated with adhesives and the molds were filled with amalgam. In group 5, the mold was filled with composite resin and light-cured for 40 seconds. The author measured all specimens for bond strength 24 hours after amalgam filing and analyzed fracture surfaces. The following results were obtained: 1. Among the dentin groups, groups 1, 2 and 4 showed significantly lower bond strength compared with group 5(P<0.05). 2. Among the enamel groups, group 4 showed significantly lower bond strength compared with group 5(P<0.05). 3. In group 2, 2D showed significantly lower bond strength compared with group 2E(P<0.05). Other adhesives showed no such differences in bond strength between dentin and enamel(P>0.05). 4. Cohesive failure was observed in groups 1E and 5D, while mixed failure was seen in groups 1 and 5. Only adhesive failures were noted in groups 2, 3, 4.

FRACTURE RESISTANCE OF CROWN-ROOT FRACTURED TEETH REPAIRED WITH DUAL-CURED COMPOSITE RESIN AND HORIZONTAL POSTS (수평 포스트와 이중중합 복합레진으로 수복된 치관-치근 복합파절 치아의 파절 저항성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the fracture resistance of crown-root fractured teeth repaired with dual-cured composite resin and horizontal posts. 48 extracted human premolars were assigned to control group and three experimental groups. Complete crown-root fractures were experimentally induced in all control and experimental teeth. In the control group. the teeth (n=12) were bonded with resin cement and endodontically treated. Thereafter, the access cavities were sealed with dual-cured composite resin. In composite resin core-post group (n=12), the teeth were endodontically treated and access cavities were sealed with dual-cured composite resin. In addition, the fractured segments in this group were fixed using horizontal posts. In composite resin core group (n=12), the teeth were endodontically treated and the access cavities were filled with dual-cured composite resin without horizontal posts. In bonded amalgam group (n = 12), the teeth were endodontically treated and the access cavities were sealed with bonded amalgam. Experimental complete crown-root fractures were induced again on repaired control and experimental teeth. The ratio of fracture resistance to original fracture resistance was analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test. The results showed that teeth in control and composite resin core-post group showed significantly higher resistance to re-fracture than those in amalgam core group (p < 0.05). The resistance to refracture was high in the order of composite resin - post group, control group, composite resin group and bonded amalgam group. Within the scope of this study, the use of horizontal post could be beneficial in increasing the fracture resistance of previously fractured teeth.

A Literature Review on Cracked Teeth (균열치 증후군에 대한 문헌고찰)

  • Cracked teeth are a common problem with incomplete fracture that typically shows pain on biting and temperature stimuli. The most common cause of crack is known to be the masticatory accident. Predisposing factors were aging, old restoration, and iatrogenic stress concentration, etc. Accurate diagnosis is needed for detecting the extent of crack and pulp vitality. There are many diagnostic tools like bite test, direct observation with transillumination, dye penetration, and radiographs. Immediate treatment for pain relief and occlusal adjustment would be needed. Composite resin and bonded amalgam showed favorable prognosis. Moreover, cusp protection is reliable permanent treatment for cracked teeth. The purpose of this article is to review the literature about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for cracked teeth.
