Non-destructive tests are commonly used in construction industry to access the quality and strength of concrete. However, till date there is no non-destructive testing method that can be adopted to evaluate the bond condition of reinforced concrete beams. In this regard, the presented research work details the use of ultra-sonic pulse velocity test method to evaluate the bond condition of reinforced concrete beam. A detailed experimental research was conducted by testing four identical reinforced concrete beam samples. The samples were loaded in equal increments till failure and ultra-sonic pulse velocity readings were recorded along the length of the beam element. It was observed from experimentation that as the cracks developed in the sample, the ultra-sonic wave velocity reduced for the same path length. This reduction in wave velocity was used to identify the initiation, development and propagation of internal micro-cracks along the length of reinforcement. Using the developed experimental methodology, researchers were able to identify weak spots in bond along the length of the specimen. The proposed method can be adopted by engineers to access the quality of bond for steel reinforcement in beam members. This allows engineers to carryout localized repairs thereby resulting in reduction of time, cost and labor needed for strengthening. Furthermore, the methodology to apply the proposed technique in real-world along with various challenges associated with its application have also been highlighted.
The applicability of limit analysis methods in design and assessment of concrete structures generally requires a certain plastic deformation capacity. The latter is primarily provided by the ductility of the reinforcement, being additionally affected by the bond properties between reinforcing steel and concrete since they provoke strain localization in the reinforcement at cracks. The bond strength of reinforcing bars is not only governed by concrete quality, but also by construction details such as bar ribbing, bar spacing or concrete cover thickness. For new concrete structures, a potentially unfavorable impact on bond strength can easily be anticipated through appropriate code rules on construction details. In existing structures, these requirements may not be necessarily satisfied, consequently requiring additional considerations. This two-part paper investigates in a theoretical study the impacts of the most frequently encountered construction details which may not satisfy design code requirements on bond strength, steel strain localization and plastic deformation capacity of cracked structural concrete. The first part introduces basic considerations on bond, strain localization and plastic deformation capacity as well as the fundamentals of the Tension Chord Model underlying the further investigations. It also analyzes the impacts of the hardening behavior of reinforcing steel and concrete quality. The second part discusses the impacts of construction details (bar ribbing, bar spacing, and concrete cover thickness) and of additional structure-specific features such as bar diameter and crack spacing.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cavity shape, bond quality of bonding agent and volume of resin composite on shrinkage stress developed at the cavity floor. This was done by measuring the shear bond strength with respect to iris materials (cavity shape , adhesive-coated dentin as a high C-factor and Teflon-coated metal as a low C-factor), bonding agents (bond quality: $Scotchbond^{TM}$ Multi-purpose and Xeno III) and iris hole diameters (volume; 1mm or 3mm in $diameter{\times}1.5mm$ in thickness). Ninety-six molars were randomly divided into 8 groups ($2{\times}2{\times}2$ experimental setup). In order to simulate a Class I cavity, shear bond strength was measured on the flat occlusal dentin surface with irises. The iris hole was filled with Z250 restorative resin composite in a bulk-filling manner. The data was analyzed using three-way ANOVA and the Tukey test. Fracture mode analysis was also done When the cavity had high C-factor, good bond quality and large volume, the bond strength decreased significantly The volume of resin composite restricted within the well-bonded cavity walls is also be suggested to be included in the concept of C-factor, as well as the cavity shape and bond quality. Since the bond quality and volume can exaggerate the effect of cavity shape on the shrinkage stress developed at the resin-dentin bond, resin composites must be filled in a method, which minimizes the volume that can increase the C-factor.
In this study, 2-mm Al/Cu bimetallic laminates were produced using asymmetric roll bonding (RB) process. The asymmetric RB process was carried out with thickness reduction ratios of 10%, 20% and 30% and mismatch rolling speeds 1:1, 1:1.1 and 1:1.2, separately. For various experimental conditions, finite element simulation was used to model the deformation of bimetallic Al/Cu laminates. Specific attention was focused on the bonding strength and bonding quality of the interface between Al and Cu layers in the simulation and experiment. The optimization of mismatch rolling speed ratios was obtained for the improvement of the bond strength of bimetallic laminates during the asymmetric RB process. During the finite element simulation, the plastic strain of samples was found to reach the maximum value with a high quality bond for the samples produced with mismatch rolling speed 1:1.2. Moreover, the peeling surfaces of samples around the interface of laminates after the peeling test were studied to investigate the bonding quality by scanning electron microscopy.

This paper presents a bond characteristics of high strength steel reinforced concrete members. High strength steel is what yield strength is higher than that of normal strength steel. So, the amount of flexural steel needed in R.C. members can be decreased. In result, it is expected that the workability and structure quality can improve and man power can minimize. For this purpose, specimens were made and tested with experimental parameters, such as concrete strength, steel diameter and yield strength. The result showed that under same tensile force of steel, in case of substituting normal strength steel with high strength steel, maximum bond stress increased and development length didn't almost change. In addition, the governing equation of bond and bond stress verse slip relationship were derived and compared with test values such as maximum bond stress, slip and bond stiffness.
The success of controllability of smart structures depends on the quality of the bonding along the interface between the main structure and the attached sensing and acuating elements. Generally, the analysis procedures neglect the effect of the interfacial bond layer or assume that this bond layer behaves like viscoelastic material. Three different bond layers. two modified epoxy adhesives, and one isocyanate adhesive were prepared for their toughness and moduli. Bond layer of the chosen adhesive provides an almost perfect bonding condition between the composite structure and the PZT while bended significantly like arrow-shape. The perfect bonding condition is tested by considering various material properties of the bond layers. and based on this perfect bonding condition, the effects of the interfacial bond layer on the dynamic behavior and controllability of the test structure is experimentally studied. Once the perfect bonding condition is achieved. dynamic effects of the bond layer itself on the dynamic characteristics of the main structure is negligible. but the contribution of the attached PZT elements on the stiffness of the multi-layered structure becomes significant when the thickness of the bond layer increased.

In this study, the high performance silicone was developed to assure the inter-layer joint in apartment house. The tensile strength, the elongation, the bond strength and the fatigue tests were conducted. As a result, it was confirmed that the performance of high -performance silicone was superior to the existing elastic paint. Therefore, it is expected that it will help to secure the quality of inter-layer joints in apartment houses.
Spot welding has wide used with a high work efficiency in the automotive and aerospace industries. Up to the present, the technique mainly used to test spot welds on production lines has been entirely depended upon destructive chisel or peel testing. Therefore, it's being very important assignment to secure the NDE technique which can be evaluate spot weld quality with more efficiency and high reliability. This paper discusses the feasibility of UNDE techniques to evaluate spot weld quality. For the sake of the approach to the quantitative measurement of nugget diameter and the discrimination of a the corona bond from nugget, ultrasonic c-scan image and distribution of reflective echo amplitude was measured by immersion method with the mechanical and the electronic scanning of point-focussed ultrasonic beam(25 MHz). As the results of this study, corona bond which is the most dangerous types of interface defects can be successfully detected, as well as expulsion and voids. Ultrasonic testing results were confirmed and compared by optical microscope and SAM(Scanning Acoustic Microscope) observation of the spot-weld cross section. The results show that the nugget diameter can be successfully measured with the accuracy of 0.8 mm.

This paper discusses the feasibility of ultrasonic C-scan technique for nondestructive evaluation of spot weld quality. Ultrasonic evaluation for spot weld quality was performed by immersion method with the mechanical and the electronic scanning of point-focussed ultrasonic beam(25 MHz). For the sake of the approach to the quantitative measurement of nugget diameter and the discrimination of the corona bond from nugget, preliminary infinitesimal gap experiment by newton ring is tried in order to set up the optimum ultrasonic test condition. Ultrasonic image data obtained were confirmed and compared by optical microscope and SAM(Scanning Acoustic Microscope) observation of the spot-weld cross section. The results show that the nugget diameter can be measured with the accuracy of 1.0mm, and voids included in nugget can be detected to $10{\mu}m$ extent with simplicity and accuracy. Finally, it was found that it is necessary to make a profound study of definite discrimination of corona bond from nugget and the approach of quantitative evaluation of nugget diameter by utilizing the various image processing techniques.

Recently, Fire-proof performance of buildings becomes important to ensure safety. As a result, fire-proof paint is required for 3 hours. However, Experiments are only performed by standard KS F 2271 for estimation of fire-proof paint. Because there is no domestic estimation standard for performance of fire-proof paint as well. So estimation standard of fire-proof paint is needed to guarantee their performance for establishing quality system and to assure same performance for safety of people in the building from unpredicted fire accident. Owing to these reasons, we studied comparative estimation for quality performance of two kinds of fire-proof paint and bond performance.
