  • The general non-destructive inspection method for anchor bolts in Korea applies visual inspection and hammering inspection, but it is difficult to check corrosion or fatigue cracks of anchor bolts in the part included in the foundation or in the part where the nut and base plate are installed. In reality, objective investigation is difficult because inspection is affected by the surrounding environment and individual differences, so it is necessary to develop non-destructive inspection technology that can quantitatively estimate these defects. Inspection of the anchor bolts of domestic road facilities is carried out by visual inspection, and since the importance of anchor bolts such as bridge bearings and fall prevention facilities is high, the life span of bridges is extended through preventive maintenance by developing non-destructive testing technology along with existing inspection methods. Through the development of this technology, non-destructive testing of anchor bolts is performed and as a technology capable of preemptive/active maintenance of anchor bolts for road facilities, practical use is urgently needed. In this paper, the possibility of detecting defects in anchor bolts such as corrosion and cracks and reliability were experimentally verified by applying the ultrasonic test among non-destructive inspection techniques. When the technology development is completed, it is expected that it will be possible to realize preemptive/active maintenance of anchor bolts by securing source technology for improving inspection reliability.

  • In this paper we deal with the system design and development of the high-speed automatic precision inspection for the defects of bolts. In order to inspect bolts continuously, we used the conveyor system. Also, this conveyor includes the servo motor and encoder to achieve accurate movement. According to encoder signal, line-scan camera captures the line-by-line image of bolts and after one frame is accumulated, various parameters are calculated and inspected by image processing algorithms. Experimental results using the developed facilities are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed equipment.

  • The detection of bolts is an important task in high-speed train inspection systems, and it is frequently performed to ensure the safety of trains. The difficulty of the vision-based bolt inspection system lies in small sample defect detection, which makes the end-to-end network ineffective. In this paper, the problem is resolved in two stages, which includes the detection network and cascaded classification networks. For small bolt detection, all bolts including defective bolts and normal bolts are put together for conducting annotation training, a new loss function and a new boundingbox selection based on the smallest axis-aligned convex set are proposed. These allow YOLOv3 network to obtain the accurate position and bounding box of the various bolts. The average precision has been greatly improved on PASCAL VOC, MS COCO and actual data set. After that, the Siamese network is employed for estimating the status of the bolts. Using the convolutional Siamese network, we are able to get strong results on few-shot classification. Extensive experiments and comparisons on actual data set show that the system outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in bolt inspection.

  • The stud bolt is one of crucial parts for safe operation of reactor vessels in nuclear power plants, Crack initiation and propagation were reported in stud bolts that arc used for closure of reactor vessel and head, Stud bolts are inspected by ultrasonic technique during overhaul periodically for the prevention of stud bolt failure which could induce radioactive leakage from nuclear reactor, In conventional ultrasonic testing for inspection of stud bolts, cracks are detected by using shadow effect It takes too much time to inspect stud bolts by using conventional ultrasonic technique. In addition, there were numerous spurious signals reflected from every oblique surfaces of thread, In this study, the signal processing technique for enhancing conventional ultrasonic technique was introduced for inspecting stud bolts. The signal processing technique provides removing spurious signal reflected from every oblique surfaces of thread and enhances detectability of defects. Detectability for small crack was enhanced by using this signal processing in ultrasonic inspection of stud bolts in Nuclear Power Plants.

  • The stud female threads for stud bolts tend to degrade faster by high temperature over 450 C. Therefore, inspection for replacement cycle of stud bolts is used to carry out many kinds of method such as ultrasonic test(UT), magnetic test(MT), wobble test, visual test and hardness test. The visual inspection among those has been only applied for stud female threads generally and wobble test is often used to apply stud bolts. In this paper, wobble test is applied for evaluation of stud female threads on the contrary stud bolts especially. It is also applied three types of inspection method included wobble test on the two sites which is used for each other different operation cycle and three kinds of acquisition data are compared with evaluation methods. From the results, we have studied the characteristic exchanging of integrity evaluation data distribution according to using time and proposed managing method for female thread of stud on the power plants.

  • This study was conducted for the purpose of examinating the safety and economical efficiency of large high tension bolted joints. The specimen using F10T-M30 large high strength bolts has been selected and static tensile test has been conducted to evaluate the slip characteristics. In addition, finite element analysis has been carried out to estimate the number of required bolts. As a result, the average slip coefficient of M30 high strength bolts exceeded 0.4 - the standard in highway bridge design specification - and has satisfied the slip strength, which is the same as that of M22 high strength bolts. In addition, if F13T-M22 high strength bolts were applied, the number of required bolts decreased by 21%, and if F10T-M30 high strength bolts were applied, the number of required bolts decreased by 46%, that leads to the conclusion that the economical efficiency in accordance with diametering of high strength bolts was now verified.

  • In this paper, the algorithm discriminating the existence and nonexistence of bolts and nuts using image processing in an automobile T-Bar influencing the vibration of a frame, is introduced. To distinct whether bolts and nuts exist or not, the features of bolts and nuts are learned, and then these feature values are matched using a statistical pattern matching algorithm. Furthermore, the minimum and maximum variation rate of pixel values are used since the matching rate is low with the large variation of pixel values of bolts and nuts in each image. The proposed method in this paper is very efficient in the automation of inspection requiring real time since the inspection time is significantly reduced compared with the conventional methods.

  • The torque-coefficient of torque-shear type high-strength bolts is affected by the environmental factors, such as 'wet', 'rust', 'exposure to air' and workability during tightening high strength bolts. It is difficult to assume the direct tension induced into the bolt due to variation of torque-coefficient for torque-shear type high-strength bolts. Therefore, it is essential to measure tension loads of bolts and to verify the clamping force under construction. In this study, the manufacture of trial product was planned to identify the induced force into the bolts. The algorithm for a trial product was composed of the relation between electricity energy taken from torque shear wrench and tension force from hydraulic tension meter. The regression analysis equation to measure the direct tension was derived by statistical analysis using Minitab program. It is considered that the trial product is reliable tool to evaluate the tension force comparable to a commercial torque wrench.

  • Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) consist of a work platform, extending structure, and chassis, and are used to move persons to working positions. MEWPs are useful but are composed of pieces of equipment, and accidents do occur owing to equipment defects. Among these defects, accidents caused by the fracture of bolts fixed to the extension structure and swing system are increasing. This paper presents a failure analysis of the fixing bolts of MEWP. Standard procedure for failure analysis was employed in this investigation. Visual inspection, chemical analysis, tensile strength measurement, microstructural characterization, fractography analysis by Optical Microscope(OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), and finite element analysis (FEA) were used to analyze the failure of the fixing bolts. Using this failure analysis approach, we found the root cause of failure and proposed a means for solving this type of failure in the future. First, the chemical composition of the fixing bolt is obtained by a spectroscopy chemical analysis method, which determined that the chemical composition matched the required standard. The tensile test showed that the tensile and yield strengths were within the required capacity. The stress analysis was carried out at five different boom angles, and it was determined that the fixing bolt of MEWP can withstand the loads at all the boom angles. The outcomes of the fatigue analysis revealed that the fixing bolt fails before reaching the design requirements. The results of the fatigue analysis showed primarily that the failure of the fixing bolt was due to fatigue. A visual inspection of the fractured section of the fixing bolt also confirmed the fatigue failure. We propose a method to prevent failure of the fixing bolt of the MEWP from four different standpoints: the manufacturer, safety certification authority, safety inspection agency, and owner.

  • Suspension bridge cables made of high strength steel wires require periodical maintenance in accordance with the axial force of cable-band bolts, since the bolts in suspension bridges can undergo tension decrease due to creep of cable wires, bolt relaxation, load fluctuation, and cable re-arrangement, etc. Consequently, this study is aimed at investigating and subsequently evaluating the critical factors with respect to the bolt tension-decrease phenomenon in SR suspension bridge in Korea, based on field monitoring, theoretical studies, and field record management works. From the observation, it is interesting to note that the decrease in the bolt tension force is typically accompanied by plastic deformation of the zinc plating layers in the cable wires. In addition, a framework corresponding to generic methodologies to characterize the deformation in terms of the bolt tension-decrease and long-term history management has been developed in this exploratory study.
