  • In this paper, we reviewed the steam temperature control in an once through boiler. The steam temperature control is very difficult. Generally, steam temperature of an once through boiler is not only controlled by boiler spray water flow, but also influenced by feed water flow and fuel flow. An advanced control strategy has been developed by experienced engineer. Specifically, We reviewed temperature control strategy for Taian power plant in this paper. This control strategy is represented by state control observer. This state control observer algorithm for temperature control has been used since the late 1980's. This paper describes control strategy employed and observed benefits from advanced steam temperature control.

  • In this research a fault-tolerant and bumpless switching control is proposed for boiler systems used in the power plants. Firstly, three operating points are selected to control the nonlinear boiler through the full operational range, and the $H_{\infty}$ loop shaping controller and the model-based predictive controller(MBPC) are designed. To prevent the windup and bump problems which are caused by the actuator saturation and the controller switching, an anti-windup and bump less transfer technique is adopted to the $H_{\infty}$ loop shaping controller. Also the constrained gain-scheduling technique is applied to MBPC to achieve the same objective. Secondly, the fault-tolerant control technique is proposed to continue the control action without stopping the boiler operation even in case of some faults. Through various simulation studies, the performances of the proposed control techniques are demonstrated.

  • The characteristics of a power plant changes as it operates for a long time and/or for different operating points. As a result, operators must retune gains of the controllers for better performance. In fact, skilled operators can retune the gains in reference to recorded data obtained by a test called dynamic test. The dynamic test, however, requires much time, and can be heavy burden for operators. In this paper, an expert knowledge-based auto-tuner is designed for drum-type boiler controllers of a fossil power plant using fuzzy logic. The performance of the proposed auto-tuner is shown via computer simulation and the simulation results show that the proposed auto-tuner is satisfactory for the desired performance.

  • This paper presents the superheater dynamic modeling and parameter estimation for the thermal plant boiler. The temperature control is closely related to the power plant efficiency and boiler life. The dynamic modeling of the superheater and desuperheater is essentially needed and developed by using the heat balance principle. The simulated model outputs are well matched with the actual ones. It is expected that the proposed model is useful for the temperature controller design.

  • In the power plant facility which use soft coal as a power source the fan pitch blade control hydraulic actuator is used to control the inlet and outlet gas to regulate the internal pressure of the furnace and control the frequence. Sometimes malfunctions of this equipment lead to the decline of boiler thermal efficiency and unexpected power plant trip. In order to localize the fan pitch blade control hydraulic actuator specially for the 500MW large scale boiler, Analysis and modelling of the system is carried out mathematically. The responses of the system are examined by using matlab simulation fur the variation of the major parameters in view of reverse engineering. Consequently the validity of the established parameters are examined.

  • The neural network predictive controller(NNPC) is proposed for the attempt to mimic the function of brain that forecasts the future. It consists of two loops, one is for the prediction of output(Neural Network Predictor) and the other one is for control the plant(Neural Network Controller). The output of NNC makes the control input of plant, which is followed by the variation of both plant error and prediction error. The NNP forecasts the future output based upon the current control input and the estimated control output. The method is applied to the control of temperature in boiler systems. The proposed NNPC is compared with the other conventional control methods such as PID controller, neural network controller with specialized learning architecture, and one-step-ahead controller. The computer simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method has better performances than the other methods.

  • This paper presents a techno-economic analysis of a partial repowering scheme for an existing 210 MW coal fired power plant by integrating a gas turbine and by employing waste heat recovery. In this repowering scheme, one of the four operating coal mills is taken out and a new natural gas fired gas turbine (GT) block is considered to be integrated, whose exhaust is fed to the furnace of the existing boiler. Feedwater heating is proposed through the utilization of waste heat of the boiler exhaust gas. From the thermodynamic analysis it is seen that the proposed repowering scheme helps to increase the plant capacity by about 28% and the overall efficiency by 27%. It also results in 21% reduction in the plant heat rate and 29% reduction in the specific $CO_2$ emissions. The economic analysis reveals that the partial repowering scheme is cost effective resulting in a reduction of the unit cost of electricity (UCOE) by 8.4%. The economic analysis further shows that the UCOE of the repowered plant is lower than that of a new green-field power plant of similar capacity.
