  • The present paper discusses thermal design parameters of different sizes of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers with capacities ranging from 2 MWe pilot scale boiler to a 600 MWe utility boiler. Physical boiler size and shape of furnace were identified and dimensional data have been summarized. By performing thermal design for each of the boilers, heat transfer surface area, furnace shape and size, and allocation of heat transfer surface for water-steam side heat absorption have been recalculated, and presented. Although boilers may have significantly different capacity, the facilities have common design parameters, when they are evaluated as basic thermal design processes. The significance of thermal design procedure is explicitly discussed.

  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of large-scale coal-fired boilers requires a complicated set of flow, heat transfer and combustion process models based on different degrees of simplification. This study investigates the influence of coal devolatilization, char conversion and turbulent gas reaction models in CFD for a tangential-firing boiler at 500MWe capacity. Devolatilization model is found out not significant on the overall results, when the kinetic rates and the composition of volatiles were varied. In contrast, the turbulence mixing rate influenced significantly on the gas reaction rates, temperature, and heat transfer rate on the wall. The influence of char conversion by the unreacted core shrinking model (UCSM) and the 1st-order global rate model was not significant, but the unburned carbon concentration was predicted in details by the UCSM. Overall, the effects of the selected models were found similar with previous study for a wall-firing boiler.

  • The performance of gas-fired boilers were experimentally investigated. The heat exchanger used for the experiments consisted of circular tube with longitudinal fins for the gas side and a spiral coil for the water side. The burner was located at the top of the heat exchanger, and the burned gas flowed down to the exit. The experiments carried out for different water flow rates, the heat capacities of the boiler and the number of baffle. The thermal efficiency of the upward flow was higher than that of the downward flow of the water in the heat exchanger. As the boiler capacity increased, the thermal efficiency decreased. As the number of the baffles increase, the thermal efficiency increased and the increasing rate of the efficiency decreased. The gas-side overall heat transfer coefficient was independent of the flow rate of the water. The effect of the number of the baffles on the heat transfer coefficient was greater than that of the boiler capacity.

  • Predicting coal combustion by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) requires a combination of complicated flow and reaction models for turbulence, radiation, particle flows, heterogeneous combustion, and gaseous reactions. There are various levels of models available for each of the phenomena, but the use of advanced models are significantly restricted in a large-scale boiler due to the computational costs and the balance of accuracy between adopted models. In this study, the influence of coal devolatilization model and turbulent mixing rate was assessed in CFD for a commercial boiler at 500 MWe capacity. For coal devolatilization, two models were compared: i) a simple model assuming single volatile compound based on proximate analysis and ii) advanced model of FLASHCHAIN with multiple volatile species. It was found out that the influence of the model was observed near the flames but the overall gas temperature and heat transfer rate to the boiler were very similar. The devolatilization rate was found not significant since the difference in near-flame temperature became noticeable when it was multiplied by 10 or 0.1. In contrast, the influence of turbulent mixing rate (constant A in the Magnussen model) was found very large. Considering the heat transfer rate and flame temperature, a value of 1.0 was recommended for the rate constant.

  • In this study, a multi-zone furnace analysis method that couples a 1D energy and mass balance calculation with a 3D radiative heat transfer calculation is tested in order to verify its reliability. The calculated results for a domestic 500 MW capacity coal-fired boiler furnace were compared with the design data of the boiler manufacturer and CFD analysis, and a good agreement was achieved. Although this calculation method is less sophisticated than the CFD furnace analysis, it has an advantage in terms of calculation time while being able to provide the furnace behavior according to the fuel characteristics and operational variable changes. Therefore, it is expected to be useful for boiler operation diagnosis and daily fuel/operation planning.

  • This article discusses at a basic level the of chimney construction. The concept, design, and operation can be understood easily. This, of course, is the first step to orderly construction. The selection of the boiler as to type, capacity, etc., was summarized in brief. The over all planning of the boiler and chimney together was the main object of this article. The architectural books covering this subject are very technical and this article tries to make the understanding of the basic principles more easy for the beginner in architecture.

  • In this study, I analyzed the effects on stabilizing the draft system, boiler efficiency when changing excess air ratio under 870 MW load limit operation condition in a large capacity coal fired power plant and decided optimum excess air ratio. It is positively necessary to choose adequate excess air ratio for stabilizing draft system because air pre-heater pressure drop and induced draft fan first stall margin are changing when adjusting excess air ratio. This study therefore, measured air pre-heater pressure drop, induced draft fan first stall margin, boiler efficiency, loss and has chosen adequate excess air ratio adjusting excess air ratio from 1.153 to 1.127. So it is recommended that the operation point needs to be changed to 1.127 that is not only to decrease air pre-heater pressure drop and to stabilize draft system and to secure stall margin but also to maintain boiler efficiency to equivalent level.

  • In midst of electrical energy consumption on the rise due to the industrial development and the improved quality of living, medium capacity and multi boilers which use gas that is comparatively low cost and can be supplied reliably are simulated for energy consumption using the partial load data obtained from the experiment. Economic analysis that considers initial and operation costs is carried out based on the Annual equal payment method.
