High-pressure gas injection engines (HPGI) took center stage in LNG carrier propulsion systems after their advent. The HPGI engine system can be easily modified to include a re-liquefaction system by adding several devices, which can significantly increase the economic feasibility of the total system. This paper suggests the optimal operating conditions and capacity for a re-liquefaction system for an LNG carrier, which can minimize increases in the total annualized cost. The installation of a re-liquefaction system can save 0.23 million USD per year when the cost of LNG is 5 USD/Mscf. A sensitivity analysis with different LNG costs showed that the re-liquefaction system is profitable when the LNG cost is higher than 3.5 USD/Mscf.

LNGC suffers a great heat inflow during navigation and this heat inflow inevitably boils off the LNG. The boiled off gas(BOG) is normally consumed as a fuel for ship's engine. The boiled off LNG means a loss of cargo during transportation from the viewpoint of shipper. Therefore, a contract between shipper and ship operator is made on the limit of boiled off rate(BOR) under 0.15 %/day based on laden voyage. This contract on BOR limit requires that ship's officer has a correct knowledge on BOR for his ship. But, in most cases ship is operated based on only officer's experiences. In this study, author presented a simple model to predict the boiled off gas(BOG) during navigation based on the existing precision heat exchange design technology about the heat distribution on the hull and heat inflow from outside through the hull. The BOG is calculated for ballast and laden voyage based on the actual weather conditions and verified by comparing with the measured BOG for the study ship. The study ship is a membrane type LNGC which is now servicing in Middle east route. Thus, the BOG prediction method which is presented in this study is expected to be used for an useful tool to manage the BOG in now servicing LNGC.

In order to prevent roll-over and a rapid boil-off of LNG in tanks, the phase equilibria of carbon dioxide in liquefied natural gas components as binary mixtures at cryogenic temperatures have been experimentally measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in conjunction with a specially designed variable pressure/temperature cryostat cell (pathlength 2 mm; pressures up to 30 bar). Solid carbon dioxide has been found to be comparatively soluble in liquid nitrogen (3.25$\times$${10}^{-6}$ mole fraction), liquid methane (1.04$\times$${10}^{-4}$ mole fraction), liquid ethane (3.1$\times$${10}^{-2}$ mole fraction) and liquid propane (6.11$\times$${10}^{-2}$ mole fraction) at their normal boiling temperatures. The solubilities of carbon dioxide in various cryogens, which increased with increasing temperature, are much lower than those obtained by others using gas chromatography. The differences are attributed to infrared spectroscopy selectively measuring dissolved solute in situ whereas gas chromatography measures microscopic particulate solid in addition to dissolved solute.
A diesel-Liquefied natural gas(LNG) combustion engine truck fleet demonstration project had been carried out and commercial expansion project was launched. The key issues of these projects are the safety of LNG fuel station and the reduction of natural gas relief. When LNG is fueled to LNG vehicles the heat is input in the LNG system. The LNG in the fueling system was boiled and the vapor of LNG is vented through the safety devices. The temperature of the vapor of LNG is $-108^{\circ}C$ and density is heavier than air. It can be dispersed to downside of the fuel station. The safety evaluation is carried out using CFD program and risk assessment program for the vapor of LNG in the LNG vehicle fuel station. The hazards are identified and suggested the operation instruction to reduce the relief of LNG vapor.
BOG(Boil Off Gas) is formed about 0.05 vol$\%$/day from LNG tanks of LNG receiving terminal. To recycle the BOG using LNG cold energy, the quantities of LNG and BOG is mixed at the ratio of 11 : 1 by mass in the recondenser of mixing drum type. However, this process is inefficient in the view of energy. It is the most necessary for improvement BOG recondensing process to reduce LNG quantities supplying to recondense system. Therefore, this study has aimed to propose heat exchanger type and suggest results through the analysis of ASPEN PLUS simulator and feasibility study.
The re-liquefaction drum is a product that installed spray nozzles at the top to directly spray overcooled LNG into evaporative gas and installed demistors to facilitate gas separation, which was developed to increase the re-liquidity efficiency of small scale re-liquefaction facilities. In the hydrostatic test of the drum, no leakage occurred even at a pressure of 1.5 times the design pressure, but during the BOR(Boil Off Rate) test, the bolt loosening occurred due to contraction and expansion by temperature change. For the continued use of the product, insulation construction on flange connections was developed to enable detachment and attachment, and the comparison of heat load with existing insulation confirmed that it was very small compared to the inlet flow rate in the drum.

One of the most feasible solution for reducing the excessive energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission is usage of more efficient fuel such as hydrogen. As is well known, there are three viable technologies for storing hydrogen fuel: compressed gas, metal hydride absorption, and cryogenic liquid. In these technologies, the storage for liquid hydrogen has better energy density by weight than other storage methods. However, the cryogenic liquid storage has a significant disadvantage of boiling losses. That is, high performance of thermal insulation systems must be studied for reducing the boiling losses. This paper presents an experimental study on the effective thermal conductivities of the composite layered insulation with aerogel blankets($Cryogel^{(R)}$ Z and $Pyrogel^{(R)}$ XT-E) and Multi-layer insulation(MLI). The aerogel blankets are known as high porous materials and the good insulators within a soft vacuum range($10^{-3}{\sim}1$ Torr). Also, MLI is known as the best insulator within a high vacuum range(<$10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-3}$ Torr). A vertical axial cryogenic experimental apparatus was designed to investigate the thermal performance of the composite layered insulators under cryogenic conditions as well as consist of a cold mass tank, a heat absorber, annular vacuum space, and an insulators space. The composite insulators were laminated in the insulator space that height was 50 mm. In this study, the effective thermal conductivities of the materials were evaluated by measuring boil-off rate of liquid nitrogen and liquid argon in the cold mass tank.

This paper presents the design of a re-liquefaction system as a BOG (boil-off gas) handling process in liquid hydrogen transport vessels. The total capacity of the re-liquefaction system was assumed to be 3 ton/day, with a BOR (boil-off rate) of 0.2 %/day inside the cargo. The re-liquefaction cycle was devised using the He-Brayton Cycle, incorporating considerations of BOG capacity and operational stability. The primary components of the system, such as compressors, expanders, and heat exchangers, were selected to meet domestically available specifications. Case studies were conducted based on the specifications of the components to determine the optimal design parameters for the re-liquefaction system. This encompassed variables such as helium mass flow rate, the number of compressors, compressor inlet pressure and compression ratio, as well as the quantity and composition of expanders. Additionally, an analysis of exergy destruction and exergy efficiency was carried out for the components within the system. Remarkably, while previous design studies of BOG re-liquefaction systems for liquid hydrogen vessels were confined to theoretical and analytical realms, this research distinguishes itself by accounting for practical implementation through equipment and system design.

The 36 liter LNG tank is designed to fit in the limited installation space of a small truck. Two LNG tanks allow one ton truck to run about 432 km per fueling. which is about 1.8 times longer than CNG mileage for the same truck. The variation of BOG with car acceleration for the different fuel liquid/vapor ratios in a tank is analysed by the modified Fortran program "Pro-Heatleak". Computational analyses show that the relationship between the BOG and liquid/vapor ratio is linearly proportional at a given acceleration. Fuel consumption decreases the volume of liquid fuel in the tank but increases the specific BOG. BOG increases with increasing of car acceleration when fuel liquid/vapor ratio is greater than 0.5 and decreases with increasing of car acceleration when fuel liquid/vapor ratio is less than 0.5. The difference between maximum and minimum BOG for full tank is about 12 percents. For the fuel liquid/vapor ratio equal to 0.5 BOG does not depend on car acceleration.
The optimum cross-sectional area profile of gas-cooled high-temperature superconductor(HTS) current lead is analyzed to have minimum helium boil-off rate. The conventional constant area HTS lead has much higher helium consumption than the optimum HTS lead considered in this study. The optimum HTS lead has variable cross-sectional area to have constant satiety factor. An analytical formula of optimum shape of lead and temperature profile are obtained. For multi-stacking HTS current leads, the optimum tape lengths and minimum heat dissipation rate are also formulated. The developed formulations are applied to the Bi-2223 material, and the differences between constant area, constant safety-factor, and multi-stacking current leads are discussed.
