  • We investigated the high dispersion spectra that had been secured at the center of the planetary nebula NGC 7027 with the Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) on October, 20, 2009. We analyzed the forbidden lines of [OI], [SII], [OII], [NII], [ClIII], [ArIII], [OIII], [ArIV], [NeIII], [ArV], and [CaV] in the $3770-9225{\AA}$ wavelength region. The expansion velocities were derived from double Gaussian line profiles of the emission lines, after eliminating the subsidiary line broadening effects. The radial variations of the expansion velocities were obtained by projecting the derived expansion velocities: $19.56-31.93kms^{-1}$ onto the equatorial shell elements of the inner and the outer boundaries of the main shell of 2.5(2.1)" and 3.8(3.6)", according to the ionization potential of each ion. Analysis of equatorial shell spectra indicated that the equatorial shell generally expands in an accelerated velocity mode, but the expansion pattern deviates from a linear velocity growth with radial distance. NGC 7027, of which age is about 1000 years or less, might be still at its early stage. During the first few hundred years, plausibly in its early stage, the main shell of PN expands very slowly and, later, it gradually gain its normal expansion speed.

  • We present the characteristics of the 2K CCD camera at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory of the Korea Astronomy Observatory at the time of its development. The purpose of this paper is to support the observers who may need detailed information on the characteristics of the camera and to provide helpful information on the optimization' of a CCD camera for those who try to develop their own camera. The 2K CCD camera was optimized to have a gain of $1.8e^-/ADU$ and a read out noise of $7e^-$ from an experiment using radioactive $^{55}Fe$ X-ray source. The charge transfer efficiency was measured as 0.9999976 for serial and 0.9999942 for parallel direction, which means $0.5\%$ charge loss along the serial direction and $1.2\%$ along the parallel direction across the chip. The quantum efficiency of the camera was measured from an experiment using a homogeneous light source consisting of a halogen lamp and an integrating sphere with a monochromator. The resulting quantum efficiency of the camera peaked at the wavelength range 600-700 nm with the value of $\~0.89$.

  • We have analyzed vector magnetograms and $H\beta$ filtergrams of two sunspot groups, one in a growing phase and the other in a decaying phase. In this study, the temporal evolution of their magnetic morphology has been investigated in association with solar activity. The morphological variations of the growing and decaying phase of these sunspots revealed in detail the coalescence of small spots into a large spot and the fragmentation of a large spot into many small spots, respectively. Numerous small flares were detected in the spot group during the decaying phase. This seems to be intimately associated with the shearing motions of many spots with different polarities created by fragmentation of a large sunspot. The magnetic flux and the average shear angle are found to be substantially reduced during the decaying phase, especially in the course of the flarings. This implies that the decaying phase of the sunspot is, to some degree, involved with magnetic field cancellation. The growing spot group has not shown any large activities, but numerous small spots have grown into a typical bipolar sunspot.

  • We observed a bright type Ia Supernovae SN 2014J located in the nearby starburst galaxy M82 using BOES (Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph) for eight nights from day -11 (Jan. 22) to day +102 (May. 15) with respect to maximum brightness in B-band. We found the lines formed in the ejecta such as Si ($6300{\AA}$), whose velocity is more than 10,000km/s respect to the host galaxy as well as those formed in the circumstellar material (e.g. Na I D [$5890{\AA}$, $5896{\AA}$], 100km/s) Also, we found other weak iron ($5780{\AA}$, $5797{\AA}$, $6376{\AA}$, $6613{\AA}$, and $7543{\AA}$), carbon ($8059{\AA}$) and other unknown elements. These lines are also thought to have been formed in circumstellar material. We expect that this study will contribute to revelation of the nature of the progenitor stars.

  • The characteristics of the BOES (Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph) CCD camera is presented. In order to get optimum gain and readout noise of the CCD, we examine the variation of the gain and readout noise by changing the value of output drain voltage of the CCD and measuring the gain using transfer curve, which is defined as the plot of variance versus mean exposure level of a homogeneous light onto the CCD surface. The gain and readout noises are optimised to be 0.5e$^-$/ADU and 3e$^-$, which is good for highest signal-to-noise ratio and contrast for the low light level characteristics of the BOES. We also measure the dark count of the CCD by getting five dark images with 3600 seconds exposure time. The mean dark count from median stacked dark images is essentially zero. A table of positions of defected pixels is also presented.

  • This study is aim to understand the distribution and the property of LISM (local interstellar medium) using the high resolution spectra of the 26 early type stars in the five open clusters ( IC 4665, Stephenson 1, Collinder 359, Roslund 5 and Collinder 70). These spectra have been observed by BOES in Bohyunsan observatory from 2009 November to 2011 Feburary, of which resolution is 45,000. We used IRAF for the data reduction (Bias subtraction, Flat-field division, and wavelength calibration) and DECH for the deriving the equivalent widths of 4 interstellar lines - Ca II K (3934${\AA}$), Na I D (5890, 5896${\AA}$) and K I (7698${\AA}$) and the column densities of those elements in LISM toward the clusters. The results of this study provide clues for better understanding of the LISM toward these clusters.

  • We have been performing a wide-field photometric monitoring program, named SPVS (Short-Period Variability Survey), at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). The observation system consists of a small refracting telescope (D = 155 mm, f = 1050 mm) and a $2k{\times}3k$ CCD Camera. The field of view is $1.0^{\circ}{\times}1.5^{\circ}$. Detection limit is about V = 13 for short-period small amplitude variables such as ${\delta}$ Scuti-type pulsating stars, and about V = 15 for long-period large amplitude variables such as eclipsing binaries and RR Lyrae stars. The instrument is designed to be remote-controlled through internet. The primary purpose of this project is to search for variable objects in bright Galactic open clusters. We present results of test observations conducted towards NGC 7092.

  • We present an optical-infrared photometric study of galaxies in six nearby clusters of galaxies at $z=0.041{\sim}0.098$ (A1436, A1773, A1809, A2048, A2142, and A2152). Using BV I photometry obtained at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomical observatory and $JHK_S$ photometry extracted from the 2-Micron All-Sky Survey catalog, we investigate the colors of galaxies in the clusters. Using the (B - V) versus ($I\;-\;K_S$) color-color diagrams in comparison with the simple stellar population model, we estimate the ages and metallicities of bright early-type member galaxies. Early-type galaxies in each cluster show the color-magnitude relation. Ages and metallicities of early-type members show little dependence on their velocity dispersions. Mean ages of early-types in the clusters range from 3 Gyr to 20 Gyr, showing a large dispersion, and mean metallicities range from Z = 0.03 to 0.05 above the solar value, showing a negligible dispersion.

  • Near-Earth asteroid-comet transition object 4015 Wilson-Harrington is a possible target of the joint European Space Agency (ESA) and Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Marco Polo sample return mission. 4015 W-H was discovered showing cometary activity by Albert G. Wilson and Robert G. Harrington at Palomar Observatory in 1949. After recovered in 1979, 4015 W-H has been observed at every apparition, it always was seen as a point source. We made time series observations for 4015 W-H using the 1.8m telescope with 2K CCD at Bohyunsan Observatory, on the nights of 2009 November 17-19. The geocentric distance of 4015 H-W was about 0.38 AU at that time. No trace of cometary activity is seen from our images. From the light curve analysis, we find a double-peaked rotational period of 2.2 hours with amplitude of 0.4 magnitude. Our result is much shorter than previous measurements of 3.6 hours (Harris & Young 1983) and 6.1 hours (Osip et al 1995). We will discuss possible origin of the period variations.

  • To detect exoplanets and study pulsation of K giant stars, we have observed precise RV (radial velocity) of about 55 early K giant (K0 - K4) stars brighter than V = 5 magnitude since 2003 by using BOES, a high resolution Echelle spectrograph attached to the 1.8 m telescope at BOAO (Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory). We detected periodic RV variation of KO III star $\beta$ Gem (HD 62509) with a period $P\;=\;596.6\;{\pm}\;2.3$ days and a semi-amplitude $K\;=\;44.8\;{\pm}\;0.7\;ms^{-1}$. If we adopt 1.7 $M_{\odot}$ for the mass of $\beta$ Gem, this yields the minimum mass of the companion m sin i = 2.64 $M_{Jupiter}$. Our results agree well with Hatzes et al. (2006) and Reffert et al. (2006), and confirm their discovery of a planetary object around $\beta$ Gem. We also confirmed about 192 minutes short period stellar oscillation found by Hatzes and Zechmeister (2007). This is the first report of exoplanet detection using BOES and demonstrates that the RV observation using BOES is accurate and stable enough to detect exoplanets around bright K giant stars.
